Fruit trees from seed

Hi everyone,

I've heard it's pretty easy to grow Annona squamosa (sugar apple) from seed (they fruit in 2 years); what else have you had success growing from seed? There's something fun about seed-growing, but of course not if you have to wait 10 years for substandard fruit! I am so looking forward to getting back to a tropical climate so I can experiment:)

My year-old durian are looking pretty ratty after the winter, but they are still alive.

The best of my jackfruit is doing a lot better than it should be. The others are showing issues with pots being too small for too long. "note to self: growing jackfruit in a 3 inch pot is not the path to success.>

The mangos are doing okay, though they are showing the ill effects of the winter monsoons and their high winds and low humidity as well.

The lychee is still a runt, but I'm hoping that a full spring/summer growing season will cure that this year.

The guava seeds are a breeze to grow.

The various citrus "lemons, mandarins, shatin pumelo> are all doing well.

The latest seeds to germinate are a couple of date palms, some salak "snake skin fruit>, another anona "some giant import from Australia>, some passion fruit, and kefir limes.

Wow, daai tou laam! How long do all these take to fruit? I know passion fruit, annona, and guavas don't take too long, but what about the rest? Sounds fun to try:)

beaverbrewer, i germinated my 1st apples this year by simply planting my seeds from a freshly eaten apple 2 weeks previous of planting. i believe they were stratified in cold storage. about a 50% germination rate. cameo and gala seeds used. i have had success with plums this spring by planting seeds in containers and then burying them in the ground last fall. momma nature taking care of stratifying and germination. can't give u a germ. rate as i'm getting more and more everyday. i failed growing them indoors. i stratified the seeds in the fridge , but after 2-3 months none popped up and i tossed them. in retrospect i may not have given them enough time to show themselves as i'm getting the "outside" plums just now. from personal experience i give a thumbs up to peaches and plums grown from seed. the best peach i have had the pleasure of eating was from a volunteer. i understand stone fruits stay pretty true to their "roots" pun intended ! wildlifeman

Hi - I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I germinate a lot of stuff that ought to go into the compost pile...but, seeds of mango, papaya, avocado are easy to germinate and make attractive plants (especially payapa). I also have white sapote, now tree sized, and carambola/starfruit. Avocados have flowered, but not set fruit. Sapote had fruit this spring - remember those hellish wind storms - au revoir! Starfruit has bloomed each of the last 2 years but not set fruit - this year's the one! I've gotten a number of pineapples from the tops - though these can be pretty vicious plants, and you want to beware if you have little kids. Anyway, guavas, avocados, sapote, starfruit and a few others either fruit or most certainly will - some people in Abbeville get avocados, so I can, too! Somebody in Katy, TX gets sapote, so I can, too! I have gotten papaya fruit (froze on the tree!), lots of guavas, sour melon, and have hopes for goumis. Oh yeah, I forgot to say... Many types of fruit trees are almost always propagated vegetatively (cuttings, grafted trees, etc). Most apples for instance are unlikely to produce good fruit when grown from seed. Are you only interested in seed grown trees or are you just trying to find out how long it will take for you to grow your own fruit?

They will bear fruit at some time in the future But it will not be exactly like the parent. There are a few fruitless varities of some trees, Mulberry, crab apple are two but you must purchase them as they are reproduced bro cuttings or grafting.

Daai tou lamm! Durians!! Cool, I'm also experimenting with them too, they came out of the winter all beat up but are finally are now showing signs of growth. They're in an unheated greenhouse right now. I think I have a chance. I have 2 that seems almost dwarf like, very healthy and green but much much slower grower than the others.

Most of these will take years and honestly, I may never see fruit or edible fruit from any of them. But sprouting the seeds is only a byproduct of getting to eat the fruit I buy.

Which reminds me that I've got some durian seeds and mango seeds waiting in the refrigerator for me to clean off. ;)

lucky you, I just bought a fresh durian. It cost a fortune but didn't really ripen too well. =(

You can eat Jackfruit seeds. When boiled they taste like potatoes.
