Moving the Pot Ghetto

I made arrangements to have my house power washed. Tomorrow. Amidst all my excitement about the prospects of a shiny clean house, I totally forgot about my 200+ containers that I need to move away from the side of the house. Lest they get showered with detergent and bleach.

I keep walking outside and looking at them all. I know I need to move them. Hard to get the motivation. Sine I know that tomorrow I'll need to move them right back.

Pixie lou, how did you make out with your pot ghetto? If you were like me, you waited till half an hour before the workers came and then frantically dragged everything away from the house.

Again, if you were like me, you also toyed with the idea of an intensive day of planting while the workers were washing, but spent most of the morning walking around (for the hundredth time) wondering where to put what. Then you came in for lunch, went back outside with a renewed vigor, and planted about 6 plants, if you were lucky.

Then, after the workers left, you may have either 1) pulled the 194 remaining pots back to their usual spot, or 2) decided that the new spot (i.e. wherever you franitically dragged them to that morning "for now") was just as good as the old spot and left them in their new home.

Whatever you did, I hope they all survived the washing - and hope your house looks great too!

Ha ha ha Dee. You know me well!

The wonderful crew started on the opposite side of the house so I could finish moving the pots. I found a beautiful spot for them. In the middle of the lawn! It's great - I can just put the sprinkler going to,water them! Dappled sunlight since they are near a big tree. There they still reside. My charming DH has mown around them twice! And since he hasn't even complained, I'm thinking that is his way of granting permission to leave them there?

I could actually be moving them back right now, but playing on the internet is less strenuous!

The term ghetto just means an area where a group that is similar resides. It has become a derogatory term over time evoking an image of someplace that looks deteriorated and slum like. In rose talk I think it just represents the area where all the plants you don't know what to do with end up until you can figure it out. I have a beautiful pot garden of roses on my patio in the summer. These are roses that will spend their lives in nice decorative pots. I have no intention of planting them anywhere. But I also have a pot ghetto. This is the spot were I have roses that I'm maturing in nursery cans, either bands or my rooted cuttings, and isn't the neatest place. I also have a large area that is my seedling nursery where I keep all my babies. I do call my winter storage for all the pots a pot ghetto because it's pretty unsightly. Usually a pot ghetto is messy and unorderly, more like the classic impression of a "ghetto", and a garden is cleaner and neater or more decorative. I probably use the term ghetto for my patio pots sometimes too though. People understand it and it just comes out. It's easy. I try not to now because they really are a garden unto themselves. They have their own particular set of needs and challenges like each of my beds do. Besides being the short hand of the times I think another component if using the DH, DW, etc. is for privacy and internet anonymity. Some people don't want to put their names out there or advertise their status.

I never thought of chickens eating japanese beetles! We don't have them here (thankfully), but if they ever do show up, I'll be doubly glad for my chicken clan (I call them my attack chickens) roaming the land. When I lived in Texas and we had the june bugs, I know the chickens went crazy eating them, so JBs must be just another crunchy delight to their way of thinking (I had a chicken east a foot-long snake in Texas, too, once, she ran all over the yard with it while the other chickens chased her trying to get it from her, she swallowed it head first! I always wondered how she could digest that thing.) Chickens that aren't pumped up on hormones (from lay pellets) should be able to lay pretty decently for you for at least 5 years, the first 3 years pretty steady, and it drops off after that. But older hens are great for taking care of baby chicks. Hope your new rose planting goes well! --Ron

Harborrose, it isn't so much that I want to plant teas, it is more that I want to plant found roses. I have several hybrid perpetual type found roses in my garden as well. HPs are probably my favorite class. I also love the OB-OGRs but they don't thrive here. Mendocino Rose - You make a valid point. The thing about a pot ghetto that bothers me is that I see it as an unfinished chore. If I could get over that I would relax more about it. Jeri - I'll let you know how Edith Perry turns out. I've always liked the name Edith, though I've never known anyone with that name. I think that may have snagged my interest. Besides, the picture was pretty. Rosefolly

Was out walking the garden after the rain stopped today and everything is looking good. The daylilies are really greening up and sending out new fans. Both the ones I transplanted and the ones that were not moved that I gave a good dose of Neptunes Liquid Seaweed Fetilizer too after blooming. I am please with the redos, I think its going to look very good next year. Am especially very pleased with those daylilies in the steep driveway slope, I think that was one of my better ideas. Even if it was difficult to get them planted. I am also glad I relocated those large roses, they look great in their new locations and the daylily section in started in the empty space they came out of is coming along well and should look good next year. My side of the house redone rose garden turned out really well, I might not even have to do any more there but just wait for the little roses to grow. I also like the regrouping of the daylilies in the terraces garden and the fact that I decided to make tower square a combo very late daylily garden with iris. The redone plateau, I think is better than the first time around. I am dissapointed that I don't have at least an empty row in the plateau for new purchases. When I planned all this moving around, I really thought that I would have a row or more leftover for new stuff.

I should be moving my milk jug getto right now...but I'd rather be here LOL.
I have them on an upper deck that is going to be rebuilt ,so I have to move them. But DH said I can not put them on the grass..I am not allowed to kill any more grass. So Since I can not decided where to put them I am going to sit here until inspiration strikes me.

ontheteam, it always amazes me how inspiration strikes when you need it most - like when you've got the carpenters standing there ready to demolish your deck, and your husband is standing on the grass with his arms folded shaking his head "no"... I'm sure some divine inspiration will hit you just at that moment, when it's most needed, lol!
