Black tips? Puny Leaves?

Just wondering what could be wrong with my Caldwell Pink (Pink Pet?). She's got black tips on some of her leaves, and almost all the new growth she got recently has turned out puny and with black tips. Some of the leaves are a bit shrively, some is shrively and crunchyish. Kinda reminds me of Spinach that's been in the fridge too long or something lol. For the most part, I'd say 95% of her is healthy, but she's obviously trying to tell me something!

I periodically spray with a vinegar/water mixture (2 and a halfish teaspoons to a quart) for BS and fertilized with MiracleGro rose fertilizer last week (the pink powder mix). I water like every other day and use my jet setting on the hose to keep away spider mites. I dote on her. She's my first and only rose :P (newbie here, hello, hi lol)

Sorry, here are some better pics. You can see some of the leaves aren't smooth, but, I don't know - bubbly? They're also tiny, and with those black tips I mentioned. I don't know if they're in a growth stage or what, I'm a rookie, so.....?????? lol

I've also got some really weird leaf formations - don't think they're hurting the plant, but I'm just curious as to what's going on.

if you planted 2 weeks ago.. it transplant shock .. that leaf dmage happened within a day or two.. of you disturbing the roots.. but it took this long for the leaf to brown .... as long as the progression is arrested.. there is nothing to do ... the further you step back.. lol.. the lesser the damage will appear.. lol .. maintain PROPER WATERING ... which includes inserting your finger.. or using a trowel to dig a small hole .. to INSURE there is moisture at root depth.. NO GUESSING ... and ONLY YOU .. cna define such in your soil ... and dont look back ... i have 10 year old trees and shrubs showing worse damage than your new transplants .. in this heat and drought ... as to the losses.. that happens no matter what time of year you plant.. be honest.. you didnt expect a 100% success rate.. did you ??? .. lets try to do it earlier in the season next year ... and you will reduce you 'worry' level ... ken

I suspect that too much water has created a fungal infection called anthracnose. Leaf edges turn black with some spots sometimes developing further in the middle as well. Blossoms are subject to infestation as well and can look quite ugly. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides attacks leafs and blossoms during weather that is both hot and humid/wet. This disease is more common in plant nurseries than in homes but it does develop there too. Hard to say whether yours originated in the nursery or not though. Anthracnose overwinters in plant debris so replace your mulch and dispose of fallen leaves & plant debris in the trash (specially in the fall). Never water hydrangea leaves; instead water the soil. Improve air flow around the plant if it is crowded by other bushes. Suggested fungicides are Daconil, Cleary's 3336 or any others containing the active ingredients chlorothalonil or thiophanate-methyl. This problem is a fungal infection and not caused by something in your soil. Alkalinity in the soil will only result in iron chlorosis spells. These are very distinct from what you have described above: the leaves turn yellow but the leaf veins remain green. No black spots there. Adding sulphur compounds will greatly assist. Nurseires also carry lots of liquid iron chelated products that can be used to ammend the soil with. Acidification will be a process that you will have to do every year since soil has a tendency to return to its original state if left untreated. So prepare to ammend the soil yearly. Your first step should be to determine your soil's Ph Level. A soil test will supply this information. Then add appropriate amounts of aluminum sulphate (keep it away from azaleas and rhododendrons), iron sulphate, organic sulphur, flower of sulphur or elemental sulphur. Table 2 will tell you how much elemental sulphur to apply per 100 square feet if you know your current Ph and know what Ph Level you want to get to. Follow any product's label directions and adjust Clemson's recommended amount downwards if your soil is sandy and up if it is clay. Good luck, irishoney. Luis

We need a closer higher details look to know for sure. I failed at growing sunflower last year because all of them got heavily attacked by leaf miners that eat between the leaves, causing the leaves to be black like that. You can find little the worms between the leaves and pop them.

Hi, Recently bought a curry leaf plant. potted up to 4 inch bigger pot. its been 3 weeks since i potted up and i kept it outdoors in the sunny deck. now the leaves tips are turning black and few leaves are dropping. what am i doing wrong? i haven't fertilized it yet. last few days there was more rain. please help.

Well, the tip damage looks like your spray puddled there, and burned the leaves. Why are you spraying with vinegar? I've never heard of that, and I would be concerned about leaf-damage.

Oh, it's not straight up vinegar; it's two teaspoons to a quart. The vinegar (supposedly) makes the leaves too acidic for blackspot to thrive. So far it's worked great. I had a lot of BS about a month ago before I started spraying, and it's like, 95% gone now. If you google 'gardenweb blackspot vinegar' you'll find a big post on it that goes back a few years.

Well, OK.

If I put a vinegar compound on my foliage, I would expect to have burn damage near the leaf tips, where it puddles, and dries.

Your strange foliage on the blooming tips is completely normal. I agree with Jeri your blackened tips are likely due to the spray puddling there and causing them to blacken. Otherwise, your rose looks perfect to me. Congratulations! Kim

Remember -- when the spray puddles up, and the water evacuates, the acidic content is going to increase.

Otherwise, as Kim said -- all is well.

Jeri, that makes complete sense to me now. Everything I have read said not to spray when the sun is high. Now I know why!

Thanks Kim :) This is the first time in my adult life that I am gardening - it's very rewarding!

One more thing though. Every so often this happens. I try and do all my own research, but I have no idea what to search for to figure out what this is, or how to treat it. I know I'm fussing over her, but she's my only rose ATM so...(she better enjoy it while she can hah!)
