Wintersown echinaceas (pics)

All of these were wintersown last year or the year before, and all are from traded seeds. I find it interesting how many different 'faces' these echinaceas have. Most are some shade of pink, but some have dark centers, some have bright centers, and the arrangement and shape of the petals differs from plant to plant. I know I have some white ones, too, but they haven't bloomed yet. Plus I am lucky to have a couple of orange and yellow ones. The link is to my photobucket album.

I love it. My white swan from last year's batch is blooming now. I should have some Harvest Moon in a few weeks, I hope. They're growing like crazy. The purple ones are doing well too. I really want to add a lot more of these to the garden. They bloom all summer here. And I scatter seeds like nobody's business.

Wow. I can't believe your echinaceas are already blooming. My purple Siberian irises just showed their pretty faces Thursday.

Sapphires3, don't give up on those huechera. Many varieties overwinter just fine for me and we get tons of snow every year ;) I was out looking today and actually saw some self seeded viola sprouting, just a couple feet from the big snowdrift still left on the north side of the house! I do believe, spring is actually coming :)

Thank you everyone,I thought it was Autumn colors,I don't know.I've got some that are almost ready to bloom that I thought were the cherrybrandys..They all bloomed last year but the plants are alot bigger this year the one by the porch is 4ft tall and 4 ft wide and the little yellow birds are showing up and trying to make a meal of them,but I don't mind. When the others bloom and if they are different I will post a pic..I'm terrible with the flowers of knowing what I have,I spend most of the time with the vegetables but since coming on here I've got flowers everywhere.Here is a different view of it and another that is different from the rest.

Congrats, ML! Now you're hooked, for sure. I've been digging out WS plants that I started 4 years ago & have multiplied - going to tomorrow's church sale. Got plenty of new babies to go in their place.

Lynda , It took two full years here for a nice amount of bloom, I actually got one yellow one end of last year its first year growing in a pot at the rental house we were in. Stage rat, I had slug problems early ate nearly all my seedlings, I was sooo frustrated, sluggo for me next year, but about 3 weeks after they came out the frogs and toads popped out, took care of my slug problem. I just have to combat them next year until then. Deer is another problem, they ate several roses (green beans!!!!!) and some other stuff, but they only came once really. I think it was partly due to us being stuck inside for a month with no human activity. I have rabbits as well. Niether came to my front bed though, so the calendula was safe. If the seed pods ripen before frost you can have some of the seeds. We had a small one last night last a couple of things but it wasnt a major freeze yet, IT looks fairly safe for the next few nights. Silverkelt

Very nice!! Mine are gearing up to bloom any time now. I love when those of you in zone 7 post pictures! Gets me excited for what will bloom next in my garden.

I think Token's pics which I thot were Rudbeckia, are echinacea.
I didn't know they came in yellow.

Wow, so neat!! I'm excited to see these. I sowed a lot of Echinacea this year. Did you get any blooms at all the first year? I love the yellow one. :)

I saved most of mine to see what they will look like, and I'll just keep my favorites. Sowed a lot of hybrid seeds, so no telling what they will look like.

I did get a few blooms the first year, around August or September. The plants are really coming into their own this year. I will have another generation coming into bloom this summer, I hope, from seeds harvested from last year's flowers.

Cool! I was really hoping to see at least one bloom on them this year, so I can see who I like and who's going to the swap in the fall. :p
