Hi Raydio, Yep, the company is very good and they refunded me immediately....of course, I could care less about the money, what I wanted was the bulb!!'

I'm pretty sure it is the cybister hybrid called Emerald.....not at all worth taking a pic of. I must say, this is one of the ugliest flowers I have ever seen and I can not imagine why it ever made it into production, but I guess that shows how much I know since it probably sold a million units and I am sure many people love it dearly!! Of course, this is coming from a guy that likes Amorphophallus so you have to take it with a grain of salt :o) Dan

I'm glad to hear they made good on it. I do believe we may have purchased from the same company. I have a Pink Floyd that is showing suspiciously white buds. I'll be sure to contact them in a day or 2 when it opens.
Now,I'm sure Emerald is not to everybodys taste but I would be hard pressed to call it ugly :O Lora

Hi Lora, I think we both got Griffinia from them last year if that narrows it down. When I asked if they had any other people contact them about incorrect bulbs they said I was the only unlucky one.....seemed hard to believe, but maybe I have bad Karma!! My second will open in a few days and I think it could be different as the scape is not as tall.....I'm keeping my fingers crossed....

OK, ugly could be a bit harsh.....just disappointment talking there I suppose!!

On a different note I got a box of bulbs from Brazil yesterday with around 50 of one Griffinia species and another species of Griffinia with a single bulb along with a few other nice plants....very exciting. The guy told me that Griffinia are weeds on his property and I could have a box full if I actually wanted them.....a nice trade for some ginger, Amorphs and Tacca :o) Dan

I ordered Chico from a place on the West Coast, but it isn't doing anything yet. I also got Emerald - I like it, but probably should have gotten LaPaz instead, a bit more color.

I also grow Amorphophallus. Took a five-footer to a Home and Garden Show a few years back. It's funny, I would tell people how bad they smell and they would go right up and stick their nose in it! Actually you could smell it in the whole area we were in.

Well, my plant is not that spidery so maybe it is even worse of a mutt than I thought.....same color, but not a nice shape....the only reason I wanted cybister is because of the spidery appearance......I think it is one of the most exotic species becasue of those long refelexed petals....oh well, I'll try again.....maybe I will go directly to the wholesale source and leave out the middle man.....easy enough, but just not what I wanted to do with this particular plant :o) Dan

I bought three amaryllis called, "Giant white". I wanted some white amaryllis to use in cross pollination with my darker colored and striped amaryllis. I already have Wedding Dance and Christmas gift, which bloomed and was pollinated already.
One of the giant whites opened, and I was suspicious of it before it even did. The outside of the bud had streaks of pink on it. Well, it bloomed and it looks just like Apple Blossom!I should know, I have 8 Apple blossoms already.
It's pretty but not what I wanted.
Now the second giant white has buds with pink streaks on the outside. I bet it's another Apple blossom.
If these aren't apple blossom, then they're twins to it.
I'm going to take a little test with them and self and cross pollinate them. Apple Blossoms are supposed to be sterile and won't take it's own or any other amaryllis's pollen. I tried it before and it gets a nice fat pod that eventually aborts and shrivels up.
Lora said Apple Blossoms pollen is well received by most other Amaryllis though, so I will collect the pollen to use from them.
So far my bulbs I got from the Amaryllis bulb company, which is based here in Lakeland, but is a mail order firm also, has all bloomed correctly. I still have Clown, Rilona and Solomon left to bloom. I heard they get them mixed up sometimes so I'll be watching the last three closely.

Pluses for Emerald...

6 blooms per scape
Multiple scapes
Produces LOTS of seeds
Survives zone 9a summers (even during droughts and flooding rain)
Blooms second year with no specific extra care

And, yes, it is spidery! In fact, they are very large, spidery blooms.

Emerald lacks a lot of red coloration, but has a lot going for it that could pass on to seedlings and my seedlings seem to be doing just fine.

I'm trying to collect more diploids (including cybister) to hybridize with this one. My hope is that the pluses will carry on to future generations!

Hi Elizabeth, Well, seed is of no concern to me as I have no desire for hybrids....they just have no appeal at all to me in general. I do have a soft spot for true species and have quite a few now and am actively trying to get more...never to hybridize, but rather to grow for their own merits.....I have not personally seen a picture of a hybrid of cybister that is even in the same class as the true species, but that is just me. I have been told by a couple of new contacts in South America that I can hopefully get some new species once the paperwork gets finalized.....I'm keeping my fingers crossed......I'll get my cybister at some point in time!!
