Glad you posted this question. Do you plant in the milk jugs in the early fall the same way we did back in January? Wouldn't they fry from the heat? Why not just plant them in starter pots, then in ground? I would like to try sowing some in 4 in. nursery pots first, then transplanting them out in the flowerbed where I want them to stay. Do we slip the pot in a baggie until we see signs of germination, then remove it? I guess we'd want to keep the pots in shade to keep them from drying out and watch them?

The FAQs have a nice list of flowers - annuals, biennials, perennials - for spring and summer sowing. No veggies listed, but I'd think that any of the cole crops (collards, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) should do OK. Snap peas and snow peas; carrots, lettuce, spinach. There are probably lots more; just google "winter vegeatbles" and you should get a good number of hits.

And pippi - yes, the method is the same. You just have to more aware of moisture, and heat buildup in the containers. So, vent more and water more - and try to keep them where they won't be assaulted by the midday sun.

I always spring sow marigolds, zinnias, sunflowers, castor bean, salvia...these sprout so quickly when it's warm outside that I don't bother winter sowing them. I also just put out some lupines.. I did winter sow lupines this year, and had great germination, but when I put out the small plants, they were chewed to the ground. I started more, and will put them in pots until fall, when I hope they will have gained some size...

I was hoping more people would have a plan!! I am planning on sowing cole crops, I am going to try them with the cups and baggie like my WS'ing that worked so well. I am not so sure, or should I say confidant in the procedure since it will be so hot, but I was so successful this winter I want to try it again. Maybe I will direct sow some as well to hedge my bet! We have had a super dry year this year in NW ark. area I will really have to watch them. Hopefully someone will have some experience in the fall WS'ing and pitch in. Regardless if it works or not with fall crops TRUDY is the best...my garden looks great this year!! di

I'm really happy with some Jewel of Opar I spring sowed, they just started sending up their flower stalks. Related to portulaca, so if you have this and don't like how it reseeds you might not care for this, but easy enough to control w. mulch.

Doodles - Since you live in the Ozarks, I'll link you to a thread about fall veggie gardens in the Ozarks Gardening forum here. I thought there was another one but I didn't come across it yet. I'm going to try turnips if I don't forget.
