Baby sweetbay magnolia tree - when to plant
Comments (3)I would go ahead and plant it and give it some TLC all summer long. Sweetbay magnolia is a tree that much prefers being planted in spring as opposed to fall. I know that's contrary to most other trees, which benefit from fall planting. But Sweetbay needs some time to get established in it's soil to help avoid winter dieback. I would also give a tree that small some protection in the hot, late afternoon sun. I'm assuming the rootball on the tree is no more than a few inches, so come July or August, the sun could simply cook that little thing. Heck, sit a lawn chair over it in the afternoon to give it some shade. And keep it well watered and properly mulched....See MoreSweetbay Magnolia--how tall?
Comments (1)Both questions depend on the particular cultivar of M. virginiana that you have. The cultivar 'australis' is supposedly taller and evergreen and cultivars more common in the North are shorter and deciduous or semi-evergreen. I guess this species is as genetically diverse as M. grandiflora, which has dozens of cultivars and varying size proportions....See MoreLeaf Blotches on Sweetbay Magnolia
Comments (8)Good question. I will wait for a response, I have one with SOME leaves that look just like your second picture. I myself am guessing it may have been due to my having hosed them down in sunlight, but only a guess. Been very, very dry here (NJ) so may have gotten more water on the leaves than normal under sunny conditions....See MoreIs Sweetbay Magnolia a good replacement for my Bradford Pears.
