Madrid or Lady Jane?

Hello again, This time my Madrid is blooming and it looks suspiciously like Lady Jane! What do you think? This is from Blooming Bulbs.com

What do you think, they look the same to me!! Do I have another mislabel or are Lady Jane and Madrid one of these varieties that look exactly alike but have different names?? I've found a couple of pictures of Madrid on line and they are the same color, one has more white in it and the other has almost no white. Any thoughts would be appreciated, Donna

I just had Madrid finish and I think you may well have Madrid. Mine had a soft coral dawn color, not the brighter orange you show Lady Jane. My Madrid was terribly misshappen. One stem bent parallel to the floor. I am waiting for the next stem to come up and hoping I get to see it straight up like it should be!

I thought Madrid was a very pleasant color and bloom.

Madrid and Lady Jane are those types of Hippeastrum that look so close, I often wonder if they are just different names from different hybridizers.

Which ever it is, it's very lovely... and either way, you have a winner!

I adore my Lady Jane... she's a tough girl that loves to bloom!

Yes... now, that looks like Lady Jane, Shawn. Some blooms will vary slightly from year to year, and there are many variables that will give the blooms within a variety slight differences... such as Ann's, which gives darker color when it receives more light. Most will be recognizable through their coloration and pattern, even if slight differences do occur. And then there are the noids... which exhibit pattern, shape, and/or color that doesn't quite resemble any named variety. Regardless, they're still beautiful blooms!

As lovely as Lady Jane is, you might have a few too many!! Maybe you can give a few away next year as gifts!! I've had a lot of mislabels this year too and I bought mine at a nursery..what I though was a long awaited Hercules looks like another Pink Diamond..I seem to be ending up with extras of varieties I didn't want extras of, and I know I won't be able to part with any of them...Oh well, such is the life of a hippie addict... Mindy, Next spring or early summer when the temps moderate enough to put the pots out for the summer, I will use a granular systemic with imidacloprid. I don't have the name on the tip of my tongue, but I read it on another forum and wrote it down somewhere. You won't need it until next summer, and in the meantime, I will look it up. I always hesitate to use a poison, especially a systemic which will affect all aspects of the plant, the flowers and the pollen, but since all my plants with the exception of one or two will have bloomed inside this winter, I won't worry that the pollen may be affected and harm the bees and other pollen loving insects. If I get a summer flower, I'll bring the plant inside until the flowering is over. I would hesitate to use this on bulbs planted in the ground for this very reason. The bees have enough problems of their own without me poisoning them. But as all my bulbs are in pots as I'm sure yours are also this shouldn't be a problem for us...This was really a problem for me this year, as I pulled maggot after maggot out of some of my bulbs. They're quite large and they can devastate a bulb..my husband couldn't believe his eyes when he first saw them. I usually keep my bulbs in different places all over the yard, including 2 decks and every location had a couple of eaten bulbs. I had a group of about 6 bulbs that earlier in the season had a thrip or some other sucking insect problem that left white marks on the leaves and we (husband) sprayed them and drenched them with a liquid systemic with imidacloprid and it did the trick.. all subsequent leaves were clear and no NFB. But, the liquid is a pain in the neck to use and messy and not feasible for 150 pots, so next year it will be granules. Donna

I did! I have a whole tray (I'd say about 20) of Exotica x Lady Jane from last winter they're doing fine.I found Exotica to be an excellent pod parent, all of her seedlings are very vigorous. I guess I know what color the Exotica x Lady Jane should be, and I'm hoping for a couple of doubles! Vera is a beauty, I really loved mine too but I didn't do any pollinating with it last year. Maybe this year.... I found that my Vera sets lots of bulblets...I gave a few away and kept a few, they are planted and are doing well. My mother bulb of Vera is now resting for a while. Vera was planted in a whiskey barrel with about 8 others and they all seemed to produce bulblets like crazy. Maybe they liked having lots of room for their roots, I always thought it was the complete opposite..they like their roots to be cramped. This year I am going to plant lots of my seedling in whiskey barrels, and plant them low so I can cover them when hurricane season comes. That was the only problem with planting large bulbs in the barrel, late summer we had to dig them all up and replant in large pots, due to the tremendous root systems and what a chore! That particular hurricane was a fizzle for us so it was all for nothing...! Didn't set too well with the digger, who wasn't me!! Donna

Lizalily, The colors may differ a bit due to different camaras and different years, the markings look similar too. I'm still not sure, I also have a picture from another Lady Jane from last year that appears to be a softer color ........{{gwi:378750}}From AMARYLLIS BLOSSOMS BY DONNA D.

Do you think the first 2 could be Madrid and the 3rd one a Lady Jane? The first one was purchased new this year, the second 2 came from the same place on Ebay last year. But I do think the color lightens as the flower stays open. The shape of the petals and the markings look the same on all three (I think) I'm confused! I look forward to seeing your Madrid and where did yours come from? Thanks, Donna

I do agree Jodi that they are beautiful but this becomes annoying....different names on the same flower! I have another one from WFF labeled Fantasy that looks exactly like Gervase If I didn't get a mislabel, it should be blooming in a few weeks. How many flower do you know of that look like the gorgeous Gervase! I guess I shouldn't complain, at least it is a double!! Thanks, Donna

There are too many variables to make an accurate distinction sometimes... although, I think Maria could probably name the flower accurately. She's very knowledgeable on the subject.

Variables include genetics, environment, and the many facets of each... different cameras see them differently, as well. So... if it was labeled Madrid, I'd think it was Madrid.
