To me...it's got too much white to be LJ. Other possible suspects??? not frilly enough for Dancing Queen. Could it be a Blossom Peacock?

Jan your Lady Jane is beautiful! I guess the possibility is ruled out. The 3 I ordered were Lady Jane, Picotee, and Elvas. Must have been mislabeled before it was sent because I don't think this is what Elvas was supposed to look like either.

It is definitely not lady jane-- nor is it Dancing Queen-- the stripes are not correct and Dancing Queen is one of the truer doubles I've ever seen. Blossom Peacock is a possibility. But it isn't Elvas either-- at least I don't think it is. Elvas has a very definite picoteed edge and has shading from the throat outward-- the photo you show has the red fading inward.

Is Lady Jane a hadeco bulb? Is that what you were expecting? How big is the bloom? The only other double picoteed bloom I have and know of currently is harlequin-- but that is a hadeco bulb and has many but not-so-big blooms such as one would expect with a dancing queen or a true picotee.

This is my harlequin. Not too similar to yours but close enough to be a possibility.

and it's not Lady Jane because of differences in color and flower; and Lalso ady Jane has no stamens, just a little pollen tucked into the curl of a petal or two. It's pretty though, whoever it is. Alana

Quite often, a newly purchased bulb will put its energy into blooming, and grow its roots later. Sometimes it's necessary to tie the bulb to a small stake stuck into the soil, to keep the bulb from tumbling out of its pot. Bottom heat will encourage root growth, and if you have a plant heat mat, that can help a lot. Otherwise, just place the pot in a nice sunny location once it's finished blooming, and it will go to work growing roots and leaves.

The two thing you never want to do are over water, or allow your bulbs to freeze. Hippeastrum bulbs hate "wet feet", and can rot if the soil stays too wet, so allow the medium to dry out in between waterings. They almost prefer to be treated like succulents.

You may actually have a Lady Jane, there... there has been quite a difference between our Lady Janes here on the forum, if you all recall... as the blooms mature, they may look more like what you'd expect. If your bulb grows a second scape of blooms, that could look more like what we all think of as Lady Jane.

There are a lot of variables when growing Hippeastrums, and a lot of things can affect how a flower looks... especially its very first blooms. And especially this late in the season.

The flower seems to possess a few attributes of Lady Jane, so I wouldn't count that out just yet. Give it a bit of time.

I could be wrong... but I don't recognize it as another named variety... so I think we should wait to see how it matures.

Thanks jodik, I checked and it does seem like the one that is growing leaves and not scapes is stuck in the pot tighter, and the ones with scapes are not rooted yet. I am glad to hear that is normal.

Well....the one that I have labeled as 'Lady Jane' is about to open its flowers I would say in a week or so, so I will see if this one is LJ and just say that the 'Picotee' was mislabeled when I bought it and I didn't mix up the labels myself.

Shawn-- a Hadeco bulb is a bulb cultured by the Hadeco company...well, I assume it is a company. They're bred to be small bulb but still bloom with large, impressive blooms. I've been told they are bred this way to fit more bulbs in a space but achieve dramatic flowering.

Shawn, I thought the same thing when my Apple Blossom opened Red. I thought I'd mixed up the labels with Minerva. However when Minerva opened pure white, I knew it wasn't me.

Whatever you wound up with, it is at least pretty. easytogrowbulbs.com is replacing my Apple Blossom for me since its such an ugly thing. I decided not to ask them to replace my white Minerva, since I actually like it better than Minerva. Had they not been so pleasant to deal with, I probably would have had them replace it.

Most of the hybrids we purchase are grown by bulb companies in Holland or the Netherlands, though other countries are now producing Hippeastrums for export, as well. Some are grown in South Africa by Hadeco, a company that specializes in breeding smaller bulbs with the potential to produce more flowers than your average hybrid. Hadeco bulbs are segregated into groups by flower size, such as the Sonatinis, Sonatas, etc... they have a very interesting website with lots of great photos and information. Unfortunately, they only do business wholesale.

Mislabels have become quite common, and my theory is this: Hippeastrums are once again gaining in popularity... supply must meet demand, and so the growers must produce more bulbs and get them to the customers while fresh, which is roughly right before Christmas. They would have to hire lots of temporary help during the busy harvest season, and this extra, and possibly inexperienced, help and the rush of the season make for many mistakes in labeling crates of bulbs, or the bulbs, themselves. These bulbs can pass through many hands from grower to customer, and it's no wonder some become mixed up and arrive at their final destination with the wrong label attached. Not many bulbs have anything to distinguish themselves from each other, unless they're flowering.

Along with popularity comes greed, and some retailers are not too picky about where they obtain bulbs to sell from. Walmart, for example, would probably look for the grower or supplier with the lowest price per crate. They wouldn't be too concerned with quality.

When it comes to these bulbs, you do get what you pay for... and it helps to buy them at the beginning of the season when they are fresh, fully recharged, and ready to bloom.

pagrdnr - Looks like Blossom Peacock to me, but not a really strong one. It should be more robust.
Jan 1 - Your LJ looks more like Madrid. Too dark for LJ, unless the camera is playing tricks.

Kitty, thanks! I love the color of your blossoms too - nice strong colors. That's a great pic you posted. These really are gorgeous. I'm so impressed with my bulb. It's what I would call an agressive grower. The two bulblets it sprouted last year already have 5-6 leaves and the bulblets from this year have gotten huge for new growth. Do you find the same thing is true with yours? So different from the few other types I have. Alana

I suspect that you have 'Double Record'. It frequently has normal anthers and sometimes a regular stigma.

It seems to me that I recall some online sites were selling them, and I regret to say that I didn't purchase any. I have one very old one.

Do a google search and let us know what you think!!!

There seems to be too much flower variance to figure this out. Different pics of the same variety seem to vary a lot. I am doing to go the safe route and label it as a noid like I would if I had a brugmansia that I didn't know the id of.

My Double Record varies greatly in appearance from year to year, and it does not bloom every year.

The greater amount of sunlight it receives, the more color it displays.

Anyway, whatever you have, it is a gorgeous Double noid.

Yes... now, that looks like Lady Jane, Shawn.

Some blooms will vary slightly from year to year, and there are many variables that will give the blooms within a variety slight differences... such as Ann's, which gives darker color when it receives more light. Most will be recognizable through their coloration and pattern, even if slight differences do occur.

And then there are the noids... which exhibit pattern, shape, and/or color that doesn't quite resemble any named variety. Regardless, they're still beautiful blooms!
