I found that cotton seed meal wasn't available at the feed mills in my area so I substituted soy bean meal instead. Soy bean meal's nutrient profile is almost identical & it doesn't have the high pesticide levels that most cotton seed meals contain.

I thought about substituting soybean meal but can still get the cotton seed meal. In the upper midwest, soybean meal is much easier to find.

I usually put some Epsom Salts in my alfalfa tea, so I guess I'll skip that.

Wirosarian, I wasn't aware that there were pesticide residues in cottonseed meal. I will try and substitute soybean meal if I can find it. Thanks.

My son will be taking me to the Feed Co-op in the country for my birthday and giving me free rein! I can't wait. No one but the people on this forum would understand how exciting that would be LOL

Of course, now I'll have to find somewhere to store all the giant bags of stuff that I'll want to bring home!

I mix mine soon after I get it and store it in large covered barrels. I scoop it out into a 5 gallon bucket to use. I mix with a roll about cement mixer I picked up at a local Menards but I think they're available at Lowes and Home Depot.

I was just planning to mix up batches in the many covered buckets I have lying around, but probably just by hand. I have an attached unheated (but fairly dry) garage to store the bags in, and I hope that it will keep well in there. I remember on a previous post, you had told someone that as long as the ingredients stay dry, the unused portions should keep until next season. Do you think that would be o.k.?

I have some mixed in Barrels that is three years old and still good. It stays dry but does compact some over time. Keep the bags off the concrete floor or they'll absorb moisture from the cement. I place mine on a small wooden pallet.

karl, I have Mills Mix already, but I was wondering about Epsom Salts. Does it matter whether you use Epsom Salts from the grocery store, or does it have to be a different kind (such as from a nursery?) I have some at home that I bought at my grocers. Will this kind work for my roses? Or is it too much 'salts'?

I get mine from the same place I get the other ingredients. It's used as a swine supplement and sold at farm supply places that specialize in swine feed. It's sold in 20-25 lb bags and is considerably cheaper than that used by humans. It's not as pure but sufficent for swine or gardens.
I don't use it often, just when a test indicates it's needed. My sandy soil plus the watering schedule I practice results in the leaching of many nutrients from the soil.
Everyones requirements are different so care should be taken when using stuff like Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate) or triple super phosphate (0-46-0)
Places like WalMart sell the same product in their health & beauty area and the garden center. The concentration is similar to that used for swine.
The short answer is yes, you can use what you bought at the grocery store.

Thanks, Karl, I will make sure everything is stored off the cement floor. I usually do anyways, because there have been times when we have had very heavy rain and water will run into the garage, because of the sloping driveway. We do have a drain at the bottom, though.
