From all reports, TyTy seldomly sells living things and is generally considered a huge scam operation. You'd be much better off just sending your money to me.

There are many many nurseries that would fit your needs. You can find them on the web, on Dave's Garden Plant Scout, or from other nursery lists. I'm sure others will give you some recommendations here. If not, I can add a bunch when I'm posting from home.

When you find a nursery, run it through Garden Watchdog before placing an order. If the nursery doesn't show up at all, it's either incredibly small and unknown, misspelled, or there's a problem and you'd want to avoid that company (like if you tried TyTy).

Here's a link from PlantScout. It's a list of some of the nurseries that sell oaks. If you click on the name of a company, it will show a list of the plants listed in PlantScout for that company. Near the top of that page, will be a link to view the company's rating on Garden Watchdog.

You can search the GardenWatchdog site specifically for tree nurseries in your region. One place in Michigan that sells small trees (and which I've had a good experience with) is Oikos.

Based on reports from gardeners here and elsewhere, Ty Ty (and all of the various entities with different names that are affiliated with them) is to be avoided like the plague. There used to be an entry for them on GardenWatchdog that was filled with complaints, but it was taken down a couple years ago.

Eric, I've never seen how to do exactly what you mentioned. Searching by state on Garden Watchdog is pretty straight forward, but I don't see any function that would allow regional searches or searches for tree suppliers. Am I missing something?

Great company. Great trees. If you want oaks, that's your place. Can purchase individuals at several sizes and their website is amazing. He gives you great info on all varieties/hybrids.

I just found the tree suppliers part. It's listed under "Plants: Ornamental Trees and Shrubs". They should take the "Ornamental" part off for easier identification. Still don't see anything like a regional search though.

Another good source, IMHO, for trees, or any type of plant is ForestFarms. You will find them on GardenWatch Dog. I've order many things from them. Everything is always packed extremely well and very healthy. In fact I've got three trees on order for shipment next spring.

I checked Ebay for beeches. Couldn't find anything locally for under $100, and they were nice trees, just out of my price range.

Found one seller of beeches, 2 for $17.98, free shipping on 3-4ft sprouts. I am taking the chance, ordered from him this week. I also just wanted one or two, for trying to add variety to my tree collection. Always have heard good things about beeches, how they are useful in the woods for wildlife. Price was good for experimenting.

You might try collecting some local Oak acorns, grow your own. I have a couple I just planted in pots in the garden dirt, that grew well. I am planting them around, giving some away.

Trees from a local area, usually are suited to the climate well, show that by being successful trees.

another recommendation for OIKOS Tree Crops. I've always been more that satisfied with their material.

Forest Farm in Oregon has a good reputation, and I've been pleased with the couple of orders I've placed.

They sell "tube" size of many of their varieties. Looking at their Spring 2008 catalog, they have bur oak for $7.95. Swamp white oak for the same price, no black oak.

For some reason, the beeches are much more, $29.95 for tube size, and most are only available as 1 gallon or larger. Are beeches harder to get started?

I also use Oikos. The trees are smaller, but packaged well...and will probably get established more quickly. I bought trees from them last fall and I'm very happy. They also sell natives like you want so you are in luck!

I've ordered trees from Forest Farm and been happy. Good selection on hard to find trees. Their shipping isn't the cheapest but the way they package the trees is almost over the top. Very secure and arrive in good shape. Another place I've had good luck with is St. Lawrence Nursery in NY state. They have a smaller selection but reasonable prices and excellent customer service. They ship bare root but the trees I purchased have done well.

I ordered some 2' oaks from Oikos this fall and am very happy with what they delivered. Some of their seed sources are from Illinois too, although I'd guess almost anything they're able to grow right across the lake from you, you'll be able to grow too.
