Hunk O'Seedlings Anyone?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone started on their HOS yet? I have quite a few annuals and perennials coming up. Sweet Peas, Milkweed, Spearmint, Thyme, Oregano, Chamomile, Strawflowers, Butterfly Weed, Sweet William, Shasta Daisy, and so much more!

I also have some Asarina (AKA Climbing Snapdragon) seeds I got from Swallowtail that I've been wondering if they do well when planted in jugs?

I did HOS yesterday for Zinnia.
I hope I didn't do it too soon, as zinnia is tender. Low temp last nite was 38 but where I garden it is very open and the wind means colder temp.

I broke them into hunks, and then divided the hunks further.

My others are too small to put out.

I wish I hadn't planted the zinnia in a straight line. boring.
I'm going to move them about and intersperse with poppy. I will have a whole field of red.

caryltoo-if yours are fighting for space already, I would split them now. Dig up the batch, and separate by hand into smaller chunks. Last year I planted a similar mix of seeds . Something I grabbed from the dollar store, called "shade mix" of perennials, WS'd them, then transplanted at the end of the year into the flower bed. This year they are coming up gangbusters. I'm going to wait another couple of weeks to see how they're doing, but may split them this year, too, into more bunches and spread a few more feet apart. If they look too tight by the end of this year, I will probably split them in the spring next year again. I'm too impatient to wait for plants to get to full size, so I tend to plant close together to see a more full area, then separate later when they start crowding. I can't even remember what was in the mix, but I did save the label so I can check to see what to expect. That's part of the fun of it!

I plant everything in two or threes, with the exception of veggies and trees. Personally I think it will be cute with 2 or 3 genetically different plants. My thought is the roots shouldn't be to bad doing this method either.

Below is a link to an older thread on chalk paint. I did the white dresser in Annie Sloan's Old White, 2 coats, then a coat of MinWax paste wax. I let it cure a few days then have been using it daily. No distressing. Right now, I'm working on my own "big ugly", a 70's style dresser that I found for $40 on craigslist. It was so ugly that I was ready to pass but Mr. Red had driven the truck across town and he said it was super sturdy. We want it for a TV media console. I painted it with a mix of Paris Gray, Louis Blue, and Duck Egg. I have a full quart of the Gray but just a little sample of the Louis Blue. I waxed with the minwax, then, distressed a bit, then, waxed with the Annie Sloan Dark Wax. I'm loving the way it's turning out and will post pix when done. And to think, I almost gave up on it! I find the chalk paint amazingly simple to use. You can literally take a blah piece that you've cleaned, (I just use a rag with warm water and a little dish soap and wipe stuff down!) and start painting on your color. It dries fast so you can do coat #2 in about an hour. Then, a rubbed on coat of clear wax....Minwax, Johnson's paste wax, hannity's wax, or whatever. Done. Or you can layer colors, sand a little to distress, add some dark wax for interest, and have something else entirely. I have a supplier here in town. I've paid about $35 for a quart and still have more than half a quart left after doing the white dresser. The sample jars are about $11.00, but they go a long way too. What IS "Hunk-O-Seedlings"? It's how to transplant your seedlings when they've grown very close together. You can sow as many seeds as you want into a flat, that's up to you....if you don't like thinning seedlings then sow lightly, otherwise you can sow heavily. I am heavy handed when sowing seeds and I always sow plenty. I just thin the seedlings as I transplant them, often I just take a flat and pry off a "hunk-o-seedlings" and divide it into small clusters and plant those as is. When they grow larger I'll thin them out if needed. Mother Nature is very helpful with this too....she'll kill off the weakest seedlings in the cluster so only the very strongest do survive....further thinning is rarely ever necessary. OR...if you really-Really-REALLY want to divide those little seedlings into individuals before you transplant them: To separate any close seedlings just simply take out a cluster of them from the flat, not a big hunk, maybe a piece of soil an inch or two across, and then carefully work the soil loose from the roots to separate them out. To me the action is very similar to butterflying a piece of meat....I just carefully work the roots apart repeatedly opening and halving the soil hunk (this is not something I do when I am hurried or have "anxious" mangling fingers) and I do very little, if any, damage to the roots.

ellenr, I hope your zinnias make it! That sounds very pretty to intersperse them with poppies :-).

I may have to do my Sweet Peas at least and maybe some perennials (milkweed, etc.). I have sprouts but none are just quite popping out of their containers yet.

I don't have anything else ready to go. Poppies will be next, but they are still too small.
Brad, do you have success WS'ing milkweed?
I never had luck with that one.

Ive done my lettuce, spinach, bachelor buttons and annual poppies, (Ive noticed as soon as you see any significant growth on the annual poppies to plop them into the ground, they do not transplant well in the heat. at all. cooler nights are best.

I just finished sowing my tenders.. so obviously none of those are in the ground.

ellenr, Yes I have had great success WS'ing Milkweeds. They're among the first seeds I sow in December and January. I have some I sowed in February/March that haven't sprouted yet. I hope I didn't plant them too late.

silverkelt, I have annual poppies that are sprouting too. Maybe I'll plant those tomorrow.

I've had mixed results wintersowing milkweeds. I certainly don't get the same results as with other plants, but I get enough germination to make it worthwhile. I usually get better results by letting them selfsow, but then I don't get to choose where they grow. Fortunately, I'm happy to let them grow where ever they want.

I planted out my first hos today. They were chamomile and bachelor's buttons. I have lots of other plants up. but these two were the first up and had pushed the limits of their pots. Hope the cold wave doesn't do them in.

Cheers to all. Winter sowing is so much fun and I love reading everyone's posts about what they're growing and planting.

I don't know about chamomile, but I'm sure BButtons will be fine. They are often the first things to sprout for me in the winter/early spring and don't seem to mind cold at all.
