can anyone name these two flowering trees?

I saw both of these trees this week along the side of the road and thought they were pretty, but aren't sure what they are. can anyone guess?

is the pink one Bauhinia variegata??

The trunk has kind-of thorn-like stuff on it.

The purple one has mimosa-like leaves and the flowers are trumpet-shaped... a kindof oak-like bark.

Glad I came to this forum - lovely blooms.

I think the first may be Bauhinia purpurea. A google image search showed a slightly differently shaped bloom on B. variegata.

The second looks like a Jacaranda. That's an especially pretty one blooming with its foliage. They vary.

Bauhinia purpurea, you're right the bloom looks really similar. It's hard for me to find a photo of the trunk though to see if that's the same, too... but I guess it's probably at least something related. All of those are really pretty.

I think you're right that the second is Jacaranda. Thankyou!
I've seen them blooming bare many times... but this week I've seen several with lots of foliage and blooms like this one. Maybe we're having some weird weather.

Paul, Thanks for the link. Yes I made sure all the soil was off of the fork. The spade though I had not used it with any infected plants that I know of I decided to soak it too since I had planted some the day before. Luckily the other hosta's in the area of the infected one were all newbies too so the root systems had not grown out into each other. I am not planning on planting anything in the area that I removed the infected hosta from. The other hosta's will hopefully grow enough to cover the bare spot and since it is inside the tortoise enclosure it will give him a nice hiding spot. I am off to work, everyone have a great day. JM, they should be good to go in southern Connecticut. The ones being sold at your local garden centers are likely to be hardier cultivars (those with the native American tribal names). Are you looking for a bush or a TREE though? They range in terms of their ultimate height by cultivar and depending on your particular zone (they may be more shrub than tree like). The milder the zone, the more frequently you will see them tree like (Long Island, in and around NYC, the Jersey shore, etc..) The colder the zone, there may be seasonal dieback that ultimately maintains it as a shrub. So too, in many southern areas, many growers prune them vigorously on a yearly basis, in order to maintain them as shrubs.

Jacarandas are all grown from seed. Thus, they have varying habits when it comes to bloom time(s)

the first tree is NOT a bauhinia instead its chorisia (now classified as ceiba)speciosa aka "silk floss tree"---the thorns on the trunk (which the bauhinia does not have) are diagnostic.

george, I think you are right, looking at photos of the trunk of silk floss tree online, that looks closer to it.

wow... apparently there's a gigantic one at Huntington Gardens. Might be too big of a tree for me. Gorgeous, though. Thanks so much.

both chorisia/ceiba and jacaranda can grow well in excess of 30' tall under good southern california conditions. some of the bauhinias (there are several of which b. blakeana is especially nice) and a tree called tabebuia ipe (or t. impetiginosa)are somewhat smaller and have roughly similar pinkish/purplish flowers. for that matter, cercis candensis, chilopsis linearis, and sophora secundiflora are definitely small trees with the same flower colors---assuming you were interested in obtaining trees of this nature for your garden in the first place.... BTW, "ornamental trees of san diego" is an excellent source of pictures and info on neat flowering trees to grow and just to look at in your area.

I'll have to give this some thought. "sophora secundiflora" is really interesting (as are most of the ones you listed)

I already have a western redbud, but was looking for something in the 15 ft range with flowers for a particular morning sun spot.
