Planting out ??? esp. Z5&6

I see a few people from Z5 and 6 planting out hardy annuals. I know these plants are cold tolerant. What about frost?

So many of my seedlings are still so small, maybe one true set of leaves. Seems to small to be putting out. I was surprized to see Cosmos and Ca. poppy on the list of hardy annuals.

This is really hard to think of putting annuals out so early when your use to waiting till the greenhouses were stocked,then running out and buying them, like sometime in May.

i have a bunch of sprouts but i know we still have alot of frost days coming.
i am a total newbie to WS.
should we wait till no more frost?
do it now?...cry later?

plz tell me...(pins and needles)

I put out my Poppies today and a bit of lettuce (saved a bunch just in case) I am holding off on the others to, I really don't want to make a mistake.

I would consider them definitely borderline in zone 7, perhaps even to zone 8......they are certainly tricky to grow in MY zone 8. In addition to the cold hardiness issue, excessively moist winter soils would have a limiting factor. Like agaves, to which they are very closely related, this is plant that can often tolerate some cold temps but a combo of cold AND wet for any extended period may be fatal.

My roses aren't doing much yet. This is a good thing, though. The colder the winter here, the better the spring flush when it comes a little later than normal. The plantains are brown mush, but the peach tree is in full bloom and I haven't seen a flea or mosquito since December. There isn't cold that could possibly come to south Louisiana that would make a rose bat an eye. If we have a cold winter, they get an unusual dormancy period which they need to look their best for us.

I was googling online about this very subject and was pleased to find this topic. Though I'm still unsure of answer. I purchased 3 of these from Santa Rosa Gardens when they were on sale. Then, upon recieving them, I started researching and getting conflicting info. Online,after a lot of browsing, sources state EVERYTHING from hardiness to zone 5, 6, 6B (whatever that is) to zone 7. The tag with the plants SEEMS to say hardy to minus 10 degrees, though it's hard to make out, as the "minus" sign in front of the 10 almost appears like a smudge. However, the site I got it from (Santa Rosa Gardens states zone 6). I'm growing in 3 pots for now, but would love to place in the ground. Consequently, would hate to lose them in our zone 6 winters (SW PA). Some plants I don't care if they may perish, others I like more... it must be novelty. It's SO hard for me to believe that one plant can be listed in so many diffferent sources as so many diff. hardiness zones. I always tend to plan for an unusually cold, nasty winter.. that may happen. I guess I could always dig up in late autumn and place in pots to store in protected area (basement). I do love the looks of this plant, and hey... if they must stay in pots, so be it. I'll be interested further on in more info about hardiness as it becomes more available. I also think of additional winter protection if they were in ground, but don't want to rot or otherwise harm a plant that doesn't seem to appreciate excessive moisture. I know my response to this is outdated, as compared to the original posts here.

all hardy stuff can go. Do not know about cosmos as I do not grow it. Am sure we would have at least one good chill. Unless planting out in the containers I would not plant out my impatiens or begonias until beg of May.

I planted out about 20 different winter sown plants the other day.

I used 2 liter soda bottles to plant in and when I transplanted, I used the top half of the bottle pressed into the soil over the sprouts as protection. They all seem to be doing fine.

I am winging it - my coolest night temp for the next 10 days is 33 which will be tonite - after that, its all in the 40's.
I think if these ws babies have survived the really chilly nights already - they will be fine out in the big bad world -they are tough survivors - and from my understanding, do better planted out than cooped up in a bottle too long.

Cosmos are tender for me. I sow them late along with zins, marigolds and morning glory. Everything else, out they go. It DOES look insane when you first do it. Remember, growing from seeds is an experiment - treat it that way.

I thought the same thing, using the tops to the 2 liter bottles. I've used the small water bottles too in my veggie garden for small seedlings.
Didn't plant anything out today, still busy making beds.
