All of these are from trades. According to my list, I planted Black Barlow, Blue Barlow, Origami Red, Rocky Mountain, and some others. Here are some of my early bloomers.

Columbines can be divided, but it's not a thrilling event for the plant and the divisions can get a bit shocky and drop their leaves. However they do resprout. You need to dig up the entire plant with a large spade to get up as much of the root sstem as possible. Hose the roots off and pry out pieces or just butcher the thing and divide the root mass with a knife into three or four wedges. Replant immediately and place a cheapo garden chair over the transplants to provide some shade during the day. Water well, and hopefully there won't be much ddie back. Columbines are garden hussies just like hollyhocks and they'll cross with any other columbine in the garden. You have some really nice looking offspring--they're always beautiful, but I've yet to find an exact duplicate of the parent plant. As my mother would say, "Close, but no cigar."

Beautiful columbine, Rosebush! The blue ones are so pretty. When I was about 12 years old, two Columbines turned up on either side of the backyard fence. The one in our neighbor's yard was dark blue, something like yours, and the one in our yard was white. Unfortunately, both my father and the woman next door mowed them down before they could ripen and re-seed. There was something utterly romantic about those two beautiful plants appearing mysteriously on their own. About 10 years ago I planted 'Dragonfly Mix' and out of all the colors in that strain I now have re-seeds in pale pink only. LOL! They are pretty and I plan to collect seed to share this year.

I had the Clementine Blue and Clementine red columbines, but could never find the seeds..their blooms almost looked like a dahlia bloom. I love that double columbine. I could tell it was a Barlow..they have that distinct look about them. What variety is that beautiful lupine? My Geum "Mrs. Bradshaw" hasn't bloomed yet. I see the Malva "Zebrina" reseeded itself but hasn't bloomed yet. What do you have that Maltese Cross planted near or beside of? That's a beauty! Your pictures are always so clear, they look garden magazine worthy! Now tell us what you do when your daughter brings/or gives her flower pods to you? Do you lay them in a plate outside in the sun to dry before collecting them? I have been watching the seed pods on my Rose Campion and today, I figured out how to collect them. Imagine my excitement! People would mention that they would reseed themselves..I kept looking for sprouts around it, but never found them and today, I noticed some pods more drier than others and I got a paper bowl and cut the pod off, turned it upside over the bowl and out the seeds came! Tomorrow I will look for more..we got some light more of a drizzle of rain tonight and a little thunder and lightning but it was not enough rain. We are so dry. I hooked up soaker hoses yesterday and wound them around the hydrangea bushes and around the plants in the sun room bed. The hydrangea leaves were turned down, wilty stage and after 40 min. of the soaker hose being on, they have perked up.

Sorry about the confusion. Was talking about the spring-blooming freebies and wondered if I should deadhead those? I don't think it matters one way or the other as they should spread from the roots, just watered them. They are a nice daisy and not scraggly (don't look so great now) like some I've seen around town, but if they self seed and come up singly, that's a different matter. I like them in clumps or massed but under control. A few people here cover their whole steep terraces with them. I wanted the spring ones for a couple years anyway; they bloom the same time as iris and once-blooming roses, and I thought they'd be really pretty with those plus my found and rooted pink rose which needed something else there. Was going to move some of the yellow iris there, too. That's good to know about painted daisy, didn't know that. They are clustered in one corner of the jug (little over 1/4) but one of the first up. Don't know why my stuff germinates that way, it's level, but if I end up with just one or two of anything, I'm happy, like experimenting w/seeds but want variety. So my best bet is to plant them HOS and thin only if I have to. I decided I don't mind the colors mixing. They do in a planter I saw a photo of anyway (mine will go into ground). Then if I get them through the heat of the summer and first winter, in time I can divide the clumps and get more. I'm going to let them get a little bigger B4 I plant them. I will let the painted daisies go to seed if I am successful, and thanks much for that. Crazy was droopy today, gave it some water, low to the ground and it has an irrigation bottle (mentioned those on another thread). Those bottles are trapping beetles, don't know if that is a good thing or bad, no ladybugs at least. Sorry I tend to ramble; wish I could make myself be more succinct.

Now I am excited for next year! I just planted out some winter sown columbines about 2 weeks ago. I'm not expecting any blooms for this season but should they survive the year, maybe I will have the pretty flowers like you have shared with us!

Those are beautiful. I have to put the Black Barlow on my list. I need to find a good spot for it. Most of my gardens are out in full sunshine. I need to start a shade bed.

congrats, they are SOO pretty !! The last one is rocky mountian blue. I have winter sown about 50 containers of columbine this year, I am doing a whole bed for them. I have some from last year I am anxious to see bloom. thanks for sharing, they all look great !

Holy cow!! I wintersowed 'Black Barlow' last year and can't wait to see them bloom...WOW!! I got them in trade so it'll be cool if they are as pretty as yours! Right now they are about 8" tall and as wide.
I'll get to see 'Roman Bronze' this spring too. I did 'Nora Barlow' and more 'Black Barlow' this year...no sprouts yet tho.

I WS Black Barlow too, along with others. They are in the containers that are un-marked though and nothing's big enough to see what it is or I just don't know yet what these guys look like when they are small. Still have to learn alot.

If mine do come up and flower for me, I am more than willing to share seeds to anybody. I got most of my Columbine seed from great traders :)

Gorgeous. I have NO luck with Columbine. I buy several plants every year, and they never come back. this year, I wintersowed a ton, and I have lots of little seedlings which is great. But, I just wonder if they'll come back next year! they won't bloom this year, will they?

Pretty!

My established columbines on only a few inches high at this point. I WSowed a *ton* of columbine from self-collected seeds, so I am anxious to see sprouts. It was amazing just how many seeds I got out of 5 plants.

Wow, they're all beautiful! The Black Barlow is especially striking.

I am anxiously anticipating blooms on a couple columbines from my first WSing last year. The plants are looking full and healthy so far. I believe they were free seeds I got from Trudi's wintersown.org. They were mixed colors, so the bloom colors are going to be a surprise. I think it's fun that way :) If they're anywhere near as pretty as yours, I'll be a happy camper.

Very pretty plants. I didnt WS these picked these up this spring , couldnt resist origami red columbine, they were mismarked as a mix. I am still debating on wether to leave them in pots or plant in the ground.

Thanks everyone! All of these are in light shade with sun part of the day. I have some columbines planted in my backyard, which is shadier, and they are not blooming yet. I think columbines can tolerate a lot of sun as long as they get some water when they are small.

I will be happy to share seeds with everyone next year. But keep in mind that columbines that are open pollinated will not come true, and these are all in my front yard. I was actually surprised that the Black and Blue Barlows look like the real thing. I think the other two are a little off - the Origami Red looks too pale and the "Rocky Mountain" isn't blue, it is lavender.

I have a lot of columbine babies to plant out this year, too. I think they are just beautiful.

I can hardly wait to trade seeds now and I only have one jug of sprouts :)

Thanks for the pics, I ws'd several varieties of columbine this year and it's really great to get a sneak peek at what I'm in store for next spring.
