New Amaryllis Blooms

So I did something a little scary for me. I was going to be in AZ for 2 and a half weeks and not around to see some of my flowers bloom so I cut the scapes and carried them onto the airplane.

After finding many of the bulbs I left in AZ last winter had died, my dad helped made me garden boxes with a better watering system and soil mix to hold the bulbs I brought this year.

How great was that! You were able to enjoy your flowers after all! They are all beautiful, some may be a bit pale, but still very lovely. Flamenco Queen is just beautiful and Emerald is soft and wispy..I guess what they are saying now is that you may be able to pollenate a cut flower and bring it to seed just on the stem. Did you try? What an opportunity for an experiment!

I was going to try and pollinate multiple flowers however I noticed that the point where the flowers all connected to the scape were weak looking. The flowers had to be propped up or they would all face downward on the scape. I attributed this weakness to the scapes being cut prior to obtaining enough energy to produce strong flowers. The weaker the connection point was for the flowers the shorter the scape stalk.

I hope my description makes sense. I do think that what you describe would work but it did not seem a great idea with my flowers. I collected to pollen and brought it back for stronger flowers to enjoy :)

Last year, my bulbs were in lawless conditions. I bought a children pool and put them in it in their pots. It was easier to water them this way. I just poured the water in and they all got some. But then some rains came and completely drenched the bulbs. They were neck up to the water and they stayed that way for a long time by the time I noticed it and let the water away. So I ended up with most of the bulbs shrunk to tiny bulblets that I didn't think would even survive. Then I had to move to the new house, so I unpotted them, cut the leaves and put them in the new wine cooler I bought for this purpose to make sure that the bulbs do not freeze down. A month later I noticed that the wine cooler froze down and even killed about 10 bulbs. I returned it to the store and just bought a huge standing fridge that had the freezer part separately. I kept my bulbs in that fridge. Then I planted them up from Summer, hoping that they would still come back to me. And to my amazement: More than 50 percent FLOWERED! They shrunk, they were sitting in water, they froze down, they were in dormancy for a half a year or LONGER, and they BLOOMED! I am still floored by some of them. Now, they are out in the flower bed, fattening up. I hope they enjoy the situation. So you see, once they want to bloom, they just bloom, even if they kill themselves.

Hi Jason, Big box stores are notorious for selling mislabeled bulbs. WalMart, Home Depot and Lowe's to name a few. I think we all got one of those with the small cute red flowers this year. Other years it was Lady Jane and Susan no matter what you bought. Perhaps many of these bulbs are tissue cultured and they have no control over what they end up with but, since the prices are so low, most of us each year continue to try a few. You have a much better chance for getting the correct bulb if you order from an on line distributor but mislabels happen even then. In some select nurseries you get better than 50% chance for correctly marked bulbs. This is a definite problem in the amaryllis industry. Most all of us on this forum know that buying from the Big Box Stores is really pot luck and still we do it. Now and again we get something really great through mislabels. Some of my best bulbs were acquired that way. I do know it's frustrating when you get all the same color though..I bought 3 from WalMart this year and the first was a mislabel and the second two will be blooming soon. I fully expect them to be wrong too. Next year try EasytoGrowBulbs in Ca. Although I have received a mislabeled bulb now and again they have always made good on it (for me anyway). I agree that the amaryllis will likely come back eventually. I would leave all the bulbs in the ground for a long time before giving up on them. Round up does not linger in the ground. It generally only affects plants when it is sprayed on the leaves, you can spray it on trunks of trees and they are not affected. I have never sprayed amaryllis, but I spray weeds around the edge of my amaryllis. Weeds with bulbs usually die back to the bulb and then regrow after a little while. I think the round up kills the roots so the plant has to grow new roots. I have seen amaryllis in other peoples yards that were sprayed with round up and the flowers were misshapen, but the plants lived. Most of my amaryllis (in Tampa) are just starting to show growth. It has been really dry here this winter. I just started to water again to get the plants to grow out. If you do not water it will be longer before the plants flower but they should be OK.

Now see, didn't they make nice cut flowers?! And yes, having to pick early means paler ones but still you got to enjoy them! I have never managed to actually get fertile seeds from a cut one but I have gotten half way there. Maybe next time a drop of bleach in the water.....

Did you fly to Arizona or drive? I am wondering if you had any hassles taking them on the plane. Did you carry them in water or dry?

Your pic of Flamenco Queen helps me ID my blooming plant that was labeled Apple Blossom. Unforunately it took a nose(petal) dive and broke the flowering stalk and dumped the bulb on my bedroom carpet. Interesting to note that though in a small pot (tucked in a larger heavier pot) the root development was quite good. repotted it and cut the stalk and placed it in a glass of water. New bulb blooming labelled Elvas is not; it's Dancing Queen!

Even with paler flowers my family and I enjoyed them greatly. I flew on a plane and the total trip was maybe 8 hours. I cut off the top of a big disposable water bottle and filled it with water. Before I went threw security I dumped out the water. I did not have any problems or hassles with security. In fact many fellow travelers were very interested in my flowers. After I got threw the security line I filled the water bottle with water from the restrooms.

If you have to travel and will miss your flowers blooming I Highly recommend cutting the scapes and taking them with you :)

As a side note I checked a suit case with many bulbs I was taking home to AZ. I have done this many times with no problems. I joked with my fellow passengers that were shocked that I could bring the cut flowers on the plane that I looked very dangerous carrying my flower scapes. You never know what crazy flower people will do.

Tiarella, I'm very surprised that you got a Flaminco Queen instead of an Apple Blossom...Flaminco Queen is a fairly new variety..and most of us are just acquiring ours this year for the first time! You were lucky to get this one in a mislabel..!

Josh, bought both bulbs from Target under the Smith and Hawkins name. I bought 3 bulbs and the 3rd one was a Christmas gift to my sister-in-law. I have been trying to contact her to see extactly what she received. It should be Red Lion.
