Anyone else planting out LAST years plants?

At the end of last summer I had some perennials that weren't really big enough to make it in the great big bed, so I potted them & sunk them into a raised bed where I grow annuals. Most seem to have wintered over well, & today I planted out 3 pots (HOS style) of Yarrows that I winter sowed last winter (07-08) Has anyone else set things aside & planted them MUCH later?

I have planted Baptisia australis that I WSowed but didn't germinate the first year. I left the container in the planting area because I was lax about fall cleanup that year. I forgot about it until the next spring when I noticed 6-inch tall seedlings growing in a milk jug. (Thank goodness for labels!) I finally planted them and they're back this year.

I have tiger lily sprouts about 4 inches tall from bulbils I sowed in 2007 in a 10-inch pot. Nothing the first year after sowing, but now they're about 4 inches tall. They will go in the ground this spring.

I got carried away with a 50-cent mum sale at Lowe's and over bought knowing full well I didn't have anywhere to plant them that fall. I sank the pots in the ground and they overwintered just fine. I planted them in the ground the following spring and enjoyed fall blooms.

3 years ago I started growing my Pumpkins out of a greenhouse to get a jump on the season and avoid having them flower in August when we get wet weather in the NE. Last year didn't work out as planned because we had a very wet June. However I'm sticking to the plan. 2 years ago I had about 8-10 decent size pumpkins in a backyard garden. Last year because of the June rains I only had one 40-50 pounder. Anyone else try to cheat mother nature a bit? I'm a little late in my cheating though. I need some more plastic. What I do is fashion a teepee or lean to greenhouse over the hills. Just want to make sure the soil is kept warm until the weather outside is warm enough.

eastern U.P. All of our flowers are way ahead of time. The Lilies are nearly all passed And Phlox, (what the deer didn't eat) are blooming and they usually do not bloom here until August. It has been so hot and dry up here that I think that may be why things are early. In fact one or our Soft Maples is starting to show red leaves. AND the Blue birds are feeding their THIRD set of young. They always only fledge TWO sets of babies.

To answer your question Iris Gal, no I am not starting a business. I'm just someone who loves Iris's and lost most of mine this summer. Can't stand the thought of not being surrounded by their beauty this coming Spring. Walter could you please email me and tell me more about your iris's? I have several ws containers from last year still buried under the mulch. Other ws babies are in 3-4 inch pots that are also buried. Fewer last than than the year before. I sow for my sister in SD and grow them on until I can take them to her gardens.

Yes! I planted out for the first time today, but it was LAST year's native Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis. There were 5 tiny seedlings sitting in their original container in the pot ghetto. The only poor seedlings still sitting in the original container. They had germinated soooo sporadically and grew so slowly last year. I think we both breathed a sigh of relief that they are finally in the ground.

I had some stuff that I had bought at garage sales and late season plant sales with the intent of putting it into one of the flower bed. They never made it. The weather turned bad before I had a chance so they sat all winter long under some leaves. All but one of the pots has new growth. They will be the first ones in the ground as soon I'm able o work in the gardens.

Ummmm, yeah. Yellow Baptisia, Arisaema Consanguinium, PeeGee Hydrangea, Verbascum Nigrum, Meconopsis Benotifolia, Eupatorium Coelest.(sp?), Echinaceas, and literally tens of Buddleias, and others I've forgotten. Actually they are still in the veggie garden and some are in the holding bed. As soon as they start showing signs of life (some are already), they will be uncovered and moved to the south west side of the house and then I'll decide what will be done with them. It's like having a garden center at your disposal. :O)

Well, I will be, once it's warm enough to plant out here. I have several things still in their milk-jug bottoms, which spent the winter in the garage. I pulled out some lavender last week, and I still have other milk jugs in the garage from last year to plant out.

It was so funny to see this topic today - yes, I just today planted some hostas that I grew from seed the winter before this one! LOL They seemed too tiny to go in the ground last fall but emerged nicely this spring - still in the bottom half of the milk jug.
I'm glad to see that a few more people were still working with last year's seedlings. I must admit that lots were not permanently planted last year until fall. It was just so hot and dry here last summer that I could keep them watered better in their containers. Of course, I snipped the top half off the milk jugs once it got hot.

Yep, planted some Columbine, Rose Campion and Rudbeckia from last year. And I still have a cartload of Rose Campion left. It made it thru the winter still in the milk jug. A winner, as far as I see it, it's already thriving on the ground.

One that I do know of is yellow Jacob's ladder which is still in the pot, buried in my veggie area. I also have a pot with three white birch (cute little things) still in the pot. There are a few others, but can't remember what at the moment.

Yes, a month or two back I noticed a poor, neglected container of creeping thyme, and planted it. I didn't make up my mind where it should go last year and somehow forgot about it. Thankfully, it's looking healthy and happy in its new spot.

Yes, last fall I sunk two containers - Penstemon Iron Maiden and Penstemon Red Dragon. They will go in my front bed as soon as I clean it up.

I took mine out of containers and put in a side porch holding bed, tags blew into the next county I think, so I have to wait to see what I overwintered there, lol.
