Need ideas for replacing privet trees with non messy evergreen

I have three privet trees that are a disaster! They leave pollen everywhere in spring, dead flowers in late spring and summer, then awful fruit in fall. It makes that part of the yard uninhabitable for four months.

I would like to replace them with something but I have a catch. These trees have been there for years, and the plantings underneath are shade lovers, so I cannot just rip them out and start with something small. Also, this is where I grow my orchids, staghorn ferns, and everything else that is marginally hardy in Sacramento, Ca. So whatever I put in has to be able to grow through the shade, then when it reaches the sun start to spread (sort of the way it works in the tropical rain forest).

So, in summary my requirements are:

Broadleaved evergreen,

Able to tolerate shade when young,

Reasonable rate of growth,

Not messy (although I will tolerate some leaf drop as this is after all a tree!)

I have looked into the evergreen dogwood, some eucalyptus (cinerea and other small types) but I still don't know for sure. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!!

Bruce
