Hodgepodge, in Southern California, this is a rose of some size.
It is large enough that we grow a row of it as a privacy hedge.

I suspect that your plant has filled up its pot with roots now.
If that's the case, it probably can't retain much water -- and this is a rather thirsty rose.

You could probably prune it fairly hard, then pull it out and root-prune it, and re-pot it.
That would turn it back into something like the juvenile plant you bought.
But it really needs to be in the ground.

Well, my GC is the same and it is in the ground. Mine only gets half day sun so I am going to move it this winter and give it full sun southern exposure - I hope it will get it to bloom...

My new Tea Clipper is doing the same thing in the ground. Over 6 ft. and loads of growth but no more roses after late spring. It will get a good pruning this winter and probably move to the sunnier spot at my other garden. Oh my aching back........

We made a discovery about Golden Celebration, this year.

For a long time, most of the plants in our Golden Celebration hedge were
weak growers and indifferent bloomers.
We finally decided to remove them, and replace them with a hedge of
"Grandmother's Hat," for constant bloom and good growth.

But a few months ago, we started giving those GCs most of our saved dishwater.
In response, they have more than doubled in size, and have pumped out
blooms like they were goin' out of style.
It appears that what they LACKED here was sufficient WATER.

The water they were getting was enough for Teas, Chinas, Noisettes,
and Polyanthas, but NOT for large Austins.

It's a beauty yellow rose, that GC.

It needs room to grow - it won't perform well in a container judging by the size of the one we have. You need to plant it in the ground.

You also need patience with this one. You won't see much of flower production till at least year 3. After that, it should be a true continuous bloomer - ours is never without blooms.

I will up the water for my DA's. I guess it make sense. The only heavy DA bloomer I have is planted in unamended clay. If I only new, I would not have tilled all that compost last winter. Just joking. But seriously My DA's perform better around our rainy season.

I was going to SP many of my DAs due to lack of bloom. I will give them another year. But after that, GC is gone and replaced with Julia Child.

After 20 years, I think my "Austin Strategy" is to grow only a couple of them,
and use the more-drought-tolerant Teas, Chinas, and Noisettes for the
backbone of the garden.

I am learning so much from you, I only wish I knew the things I know about DA in the past few years before I bought so many of them. Well live and learn.

I will start looking at OGRs when I am replacing my DA's. Eglantyne only has more year to perform. I will let it be a climber next year and see what happens. Next year, if not performing, Grandmathers Hat will sit in its place, thanks to your recommendation. I only hope I can find one then and Vintage Gardens would be still in business.

They're just not the right roses for where WE are -- but when we started,
we didn't know, and there was no one to ask.

Well, Bob Edberg, who was Limberlost Roses, really DID try to tell us
what were the right roses for where we are.
Did we listen? Noooooooooo . . .
We still had to prove it to ourselves, I guess.

Anyhow, we had a lot more rain back then. That made a tremendous difference.

hodgepodge_roses - have you tried adding in some potash?

You see, early in June, I've received a very tiny barerooted rose of 'Summer Song' and 'Tea Clipper' and I was afraid they won't bloom, so I pour in a lot of organic pellets and also some potash. To my amazement, those tiny roses are blooming now.

Sun + water + fertilisers = Blooms!

That's my perception - but again, all roses are different.

Totally agree that it needs to be in the ground. I have a number of roses that languished in pots for a few years. I put them in the ground this late summer, and the growth & flowering has been amazing. Its a hodge podge collection of different types of roses, including some hybrid teas. .

At our last club rose auction we pointed out the easy to grow disease resistant varieties to help out the novices. We get so much rain that BS resistance is a huge factor in how varieties do in a no spray garden.

I got my GC at an Armstrong nursery that was going out of business in my area...I got it for $5 and it was such a beautiful rose I couldn't pass...I have always intended to put it in the ground but I am a newlywed renting and no bed to put it in. Maybe I can have a "babysitter" for GC for the next year until I can give it a better home. By the way, that Armstrong closing was some of my happiest moments...as was my visit to sequoia the day before they closed.
