90+ degrees this weekend -- what to do?

Last year it was cold and too much rain. This year it's freaky hot-as-hades spells! I have seeds that have not sprouted yet, and I figure they're ok as long as they stay moist. Is this true? Can they get too hot? And last weekend they literally froze... lol...

For the little sprouts, I've covered them with some garden fabric, but it's still SO hot! I don't have any real shade. Should I bring them inside? I don't have a garage, either :(

You can use lawn chairs, umbrellas, baskets and such to provide shade to newly planted sprouts. The jugs with sprouts in them should also be shaded. I bring mine into the shade on my breezeway or else set them along the north side of the garage. The air inside the jugs gets really HOT in the sun. I think seeds would be okay as long as you don't let them dry out but the sprouts will broil.
Could you rig up a tent using an old sheet, twine and some garden stakes?
Best of luck with your sprouts. It's rough getting them this far only to face yet another weather challenge.

I don't do anything other than make sure they are well watered and not drying out.

I've been wintersowing for 7 years now. All my containers, germinated seeds, seedlings and containers I just put out with no germination in them, are all in direct sun just about the entire day and they sit directly on the ground.

Over the 7 years I have been sowing, they have gone through every kind of weather that mother nature and New England can throw at them and us, and they have all survived without any problems.

I've never had sprouts "broil" or die because of direct sun and too hot, never had them drown in containers that where floating in a foot of water, covered tender annuals if the temps where well below freezing and all survived.

Just be sure that you soil is good and wet, do your best to not let the soil dry out and don't fret about the heat and the sun.

Bringing them inside would be worse for them than the heat and the sun. They are used to being outside, not inside. Inside might kill them off with the sudden temp, air and sunlight change.

Dahli22, I made my own version of a swiss chard wrap this week, and they are the biggest hit ever! We had it tonight at a party, and yesterday I took them to the neighborhood picnic. I'm going to use them in some classes this week. As much chard as you need individual leaves. For every 70 leaves you need a full cup of the raw rice. 1 cup uncooked brown sushi (sticky) rice or shortgrain brown rice (needs to be short grain, and sticky is best). Cooked until well done (do not rinse first, let it go sticky) 1/2 c. miso mayo (my mayo of choice, but I'm sure you can use regular mayo 4 leeks or an onion sliced olive oil 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts 4 larger sized radishes finely chopped 2 carrots finely chopped 6 bite sized pieces of 9 day pickles (I think 3 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish would substitute nicely) Seasoned vinegar: I make my own herbal vinegars but a seasoned rice vinegar to taste will work. Probably 2 tablespoons salt pepper assorted chopped herbs of your choice: 4 tablespoons Cut the swiss chard stems off of the leaves, cut down a bit to get all the firmest part cut away from the leave but leave the leaf intact. Chop finely. Saute the onion or leek and swiss chard stems until soft. Add finely chopped nuts, pickles, radish, carrot in a bowl to cool. Add in the fully cooked rice and herbs. Mix together well. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the miso mayo and stir - season to taste. I found I needed some raw garlic, just a small amount for some kick. This will seem very strongly flavored, and it needs to be to compete with raw chard. Add a dollop of the mix on each clean and dry chard leaf. Wrap in a bundle and secure with a tooth pick. I make each one into a two bite size. Rave reviews, now my fave!! Wall corner cab: angled or 90 degree?

It's definitely a matter of opinion of which looks nicer, because I think the 90 degree doors look far better. I don't like the way the diagonal style comes over the counter, and on base cabs, takes up floor space, making the kitchen seem smaller, and only accomplishing making a deep corner all that much deeper. The 90 degree doors offer wider access to a cabinet that isn't as deep and cavelike, as others have already said. To me the diagonal doored cabinets look big and awkward, especially in layouts in which they don't have a cabinet next to them on each side. We had the 90-degree door with the center hinge in our last house and I never found it to be a problem, as I just knew what to expect from it and how to operate it. We had another corner cabinet (base cab) that was at an odd angle and had to have your 2nd option...the 2 doors in which one overlaps the other in the center. This is OK, too, as long as you (and family members) always remember which one closes first and don't end up doing it twice every time. ;-) Also, you have to open and close 2 doors instead of one a lot of the time...So it depends on whether that bothers you or not.

90 degree C supply wire warning. What does it mean?

The warning label is NOT about lamp size. In order for the manufacturer to place the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label on their fluorescent fixtures, the supply wires must enter the fixture over 3" away from the ballast. This is because UL requires that ALL wires within 3" of a ballast be rated for 90C. This 3"/90C UL requirement is the source of the requirement in NEC 410.33. Yet some fixture sizes and/or designs don't allow for that minimum 3" spacing , so UL allows the UL label on fixtures where supply wires enter within 3" from a ballast -IF- the manufacturer also places a label requiring 90C supply wire only. You don't need to add a box. Just pigtail a length of 90C wire to your house wires in the box, and bring the higher rated wires into the fixture to supply the ballast.

The can says minimum 90c. That means the insulation on the wire must be rated for 90 C or higher. NM-B has conductors have a minimum rating of 90C (but could be higher) but could be higher. The manufacturer is saying he used 90 C conductors. It depends on who is writing the spec. The fixture design gives a minimum allowed rating. The cable manufacturer is specifying the rating for the insulation he actually used. The NEC calls out what the minimum allowed insulation is to build the cable.

My sprouts are in direct sun all day until about 5-4 pm.
They are uncovered.
I don't think there will be any problem with the heat, as long as they are well-watered.
I don't think your seeds will suffer either.

The only time to be careful is the in-between time - ie the seed sprouts, but the container is covered.
In this weather, the sprout may well keel over if not discovered in time, and the container opened.
