All of those bulbs sitting there drying out

Yesterday I passed by all of those boxed amaryllis bulbs at the local Wal-Mart, about 60-100 for $1.25 each and in pretty good shape. Today, I've been thinking about all of those bulbs sitting there drying out. What can I do with them?

One idea is to put a bunch in a large planter and keep them cool for a month or two until the sun is stronger here in NE Indiana (There is a limit to the best window space).

Another idea is to store them near to the freezing mark, say about 35 degrees till spring (can they stay okay at that temp for 4 months?) and then putting them out to bloom, or at least see what they will do.

Another idea is to pot them up (the pots they come with are not too bad if holes are cut in the bottoms but the coir is of poor quality and not enough--soil would need to be added and is needed anyway, and give them out to nursing home patients when ready to bloom. I don't know if the patients are allowed to have live plants in their rooms.

Any one have any good ideas?
