Question about Lady of Shalott

I know I've been trolling these forums pretty heavily today, but the weather is foul and I'm writing a script that is taking forever to run. Programming is incredibly dull sometimes, but it gives me a lot of time to brainstorm. I was thinking that I want to dig up my Plumeria before January comes and put it in a pot. It is in a spot that would be prime territory for a nice climber. I need a vibrant color, but not on the cool side since it will be near to a door that will soon be painted brick red. The lady across the street has a monster Crepescule on an eastern exposure, but it kept blooming through August and looked downright awful. Does anyone know if Lady of Shalott stops blooming in extreme heat? The one little Wenlock (I think) that I've got didn't bloom when the heat came, but kept very nice foliage and I'd like something with similar behavior. I know LOS isn't marketed as a climber, but I remember reading somewhere that she would climb in the deep south. Graham Thomas would be nice as well, or perhaps Teasing Georgia.

I've had Lady of Shalott for two years and do love it. I've never seen it as a climber, but this second year, it did throw out some extra long canes (what we call here the "Jolly Green Giant" syndrome), so I imagine it could climb--although I trimmed mine off so I could have about a 5 ft shrub. The advantage the Lady has over Graham Thomas is that the Lady is much more BS resistant, although not perfect on that score, but way above average.

Teasing Georgia is supposed to be a good climber and BS resistant, but I have never seen one, so I can't say for sure. The Lady's colors are more sit-up-and-take-notice than are Georgia's.

Other good choices in the same general color range are Crown Princess Margareta, which has been fairly popular as a climber on this forum, and the new Fighting Temeraire--kinda of a single, but very attractive in the pictures. Like Lady, Temeraire is supposed to have excellent BS resistance. I'm not sure if the Crown Princess does also.

Does the Lady stop blooming in extreme heat? I think almost every rose I've ever grown slows down to a least a near stop, if not a full-stop, in August, or at least, August in Kansas. The Lady is no worse than most of my roses and may be a bit better than most of them. I remember it repeated more often in hot weather than the others did--but I think it did finally rest when the temps stayed too long over 100 degrees. The leaves on none of the bushes look overly good during such time periods, but the Lady's leaves did look a lot better than those on some of my other roses.

You do understand that all of the roses under discussion here probably all fit in the category of "small climbers," don't you?--like no taller than 8 ft? Not big, tall, long climbers like Crepescule, for instance.

Actually, any of the roses you name here would make a lovely addition to your gardens, so you can't really lose on this one. : )

Kate, thanks for the info. I really didn't want a noisette as they get very huge very fast around here. I grew a few when I lived on the north side of the lake and had a larger yard, but I only have a 50 x 120 lot now. I can only plant in the front as the back is completely shaded by a large live oak. Although the tree is amazing, it greatly reduces my rose options.

Three years ago I moved Jude to the back of my garden and it hasn't done much so far. But as I recall, it took it quite a few years to show its stuff in the earlier spot it was in, years and years and lots and lots of unplanned pruning because I was always getting stabbed with its vicious thorns as I went by. But it had no disease and was very vigorous. Maybe I don't have the hang of pruning it. To tell the truth, I didn't like the fragrance of this rose at first, although then I grew to like it. I still don't think it is has a graceful or even an attractive habit. It does have that beautiful cup-shaped blossom, but the flowers never open up and develop in the interesting way real old-fashioned cup-shaped roses do, which is a bit disappointing, and they are useless to bring in the house. I am contemplating replacing it with a real climber -- or maybe an elderberry trained as a climber, but will give it another year. Sigh.

Perhaps it was just the photos, but none of the '09s look all that special to me. A real off year. Perhaps he's holding off on some better ones until the economy improves. If you want gossamer petals, 'Heritage' fits the bill.

As I understand it, there are several different strains of black spot; so a rose that resists the fungus in one area may not in another as there may be another type of black spot in that area. If you love the rose, try it in your garden and see how it does.

Since we were watching the progression of these roses, I thought you might like to see how they developed in another day and a half. Lady of Shalott--I swear this Austin gets prettier as each day passes by! Little Sunset--I think my little mini may be phototropic--seems to be getting more red the longer it is in the sun. Lady of Shalott is a fairly vigorous climber here in SoCal. Don't know about the extreme heat question, though, as we don't have that in my coastal location. LoS can get canes up to 15 foot long, and makes a good fence coverer if the fence is about 6 to 8 foot tall.
