I was going to post the pictures here but this doesn't seem to be a forum where you can do that. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Nice blog!

You can post photos here, but be warned about ivillage's privacy and user rules: everything you post here, including images, become the property of ivillage. They have explicitly stated that they can do whatever they want with them, including sell them !!!

A few years ago, a lot of GW people left because of this revamping. This forum, especially, was quite vibrant. We have gone to better places now.

On posting images. Generally if you do not care if they make money with them then no big deal. But to bypass their "taking" of your images you can always put the images up at Photobucket which remain yours, since you can easily add and DELETE any image you post there, and then link to the image at Photobucket or set up that image as an img src here and retain control of the image.

There's no rule that says you have to stick to "alpines" when establishing a rock garden, so why don't you fill in the gaps with annuals this first year? Granted, some are out of scale with your rock plants and might inhibit their growth by taking over, but portulaca, for instance, is a great plant that looks right at home in a rock garden, blooms all summer, and reseeds (although I've never had it become weedy). Nasturtiums can be direct seeded into the garden and will spread over rocks to soften edges; they also bloom better if grown in leaner soils and not irrigated so much. Gomphrena globosa, in purples and reds, is sun and heat tolerant and will provide some visual interest without taking over space you want your perennials to occupy in future years. I'm sure there are lots of others, but this would be a great way to buy some time while your slower growing plants get established. Whatever you do, don't try to rush things by planting aggressive perennial groundcovers like Vinca major or Asiatic jasmine; trust me (the voice of experience), you'd live to regret it!

We have done away with unwanted growth by smothering. It takes time but is worth it. We remove as much growth as possible. Lay down heavy cardboard or thicknessess of newspapers. Cover it with all the leaves we can find. Cover with a tarp weighted down around the sides with rocks. Leave it all winter. In spring remove the tarp and cardboard. Check the earth for cleanliness. Define boundries of the garden. Ammend soil appropriately. We amend with peat ,compost, top soil, sand, organic elements such as bone meal, phosphate, or blood meal. We dig in the leaves. Define areas where we want specific plants. Make borders around the areas. We use old metal wheel rims sprayed with hammered metal rustoleum on the more level areas or concrete blocks with spaces placed upward. We plant sedums in the spaces of the blocks. Material of choice may be used. Build up the soil within the planting areas, providing good drainage.. Put in the plants. Make small trenches between the planting areas and fill with with river rock. Put a light mulch of pea gravel around the plants. This prevents soil from splattering on the plants when raining or watering. The varied size of the rock makes it more interesting. Other rock may be put in for accent. When making planting holes fill with water to ensure good drainage. Place plant in hole and water to settle the soil. Then put on the top layer of pea gravel. The trenches filled with river rock makes a good draining area. This encourages roots to spread to reach the moisture. I am in process of doing an area in this way now. It is looking good. As you can see in the pic, there is also a garden above the hill that I have been working on, and I planted wax myrtle, japanese maple,clematis, sweet olive and butterfly bush up there, but I think I need more rocks to divert some of the rain water into the woods so it doesn't run as fast towards to hill. The steps are coming out, but I have limited skills and money to fix that this year. Mabey next year. Well, anywho, the water isn't washing the hillside away like it was before, and thank God for daylillies! Still a work in progress like any garden, next year is another season for improving it. What a great garden and your blog is quite entertaining, too! Do you just go on a rock hunt to see what you can find? All I've got in SC is sandy soil; oh, and rocks by ton--if you want to buy them!

I have a nephew in SC -- I should go visit and get some rocks :) Actually, these rocks were all over my yard for some reason. I decided to put them all together in a rock garden. I am going to go hunting for rocks because I need to expand the rock garden by about 20+ more feet in length. oh, yeh, I did go hunting for the river rock. Numerous excursions to the beach. (SHHHH)

I'm not too comfortable with the idea that GW could possibly make some money off my photos. :/ yuck.

on the other hand, your garden is just awesome!! :') i love how you done that!! i've been thinking of doing one, but never got around to it YET!! LOL we go on walks all the time, i think we will be bringing rocks home!! LOL ~Medo :')

Regarding photos, terrestrial man is right: providing a link to your photo is safe. Just don't post an actual photo on the forum if you want to keep it as yours.
