European beech - is it Fountain or Pendula, or both

THE most expensive tree that the landscapers have placed in is up for debate. I specifically requested a fagus sylvatica purpurae Pendula, but the tree that has been transplanted looks like the Fountain variety, which frankly, I just don't like. The landscapers insist that it's a Pendula. My question then is, are they the same exact tree and only differ by how the tree is pruned, or are these two trees distinct and grow differently? Or, does it take a while for the Pendula to get its form, in which case, do I have to do anything special to get the Pendula form? In pictures that I have seem doing my research, the Pendula looks like a mushroom, whilst the Fountain looks like... Well a very messy fountain! Web searches seem to indicate they are two distinct varieties, but I would like to get views from those out there that have these trees.
