Michael, I think it is good that you are firm in stating what you want in terms of the bed, since it would not achieve anyone's objectives to pretend otherwise. It is also nice that you are responding to the feedback you're getting as that allows people to refine their advice. But I have a sense that you are in a bit of a decision-making limbo, though, and I think three things are holding you back. One is an apparent lack of local nurseries that offer you really good variety. Sourcing what you want is an art in itself, and it can be easier to just cruise all your nurseries and choose from what they have rather than choosing from the entire wealth of the plant kingdom as presented by the internet. On the other hand, there are some great mail-order nurseries, and if you do have wishes that can't be met locally, you should feel free to take advantage of them. But you can't beat local nursery visits for getting to know plants up close and personal, and learning what is likely to work well in your area. Another is that you keep being attracted to plants that just aren't suitable for the spot, such as those umbrella-looking trees (probably weeping birches, cherries, or similar) which are indeed nice but in this spot will be one of those mistakes that you will regret in a few years. I think this reflects that your objectives for the space are not quite clear enough yet - focus on what overall plant shape you want first and foremost, and what constraints really matter (eg you can push the boundaries on height, but not on width). Or it could mean that you're readier to work on the property as a whole than you think! It is generally advisable to have an overall plan before making big decisions, but as long as this spot will remain in about the same amount of sun it now has, you can go ahead and make a decision for it. Maybe it would be good to keep a list of the other plants that are appealing to you for the later design process. Finally, I think you are making the stakes pretty high by feeling you have to make the right decision that will work for all time. With plants, all decisions are reversible, and there is nothing wrong with working with a temporary timeline. That's one reason I always buy my plants small and let them grow, since I don't want a $200 investment that I will be hesitant to change my mind about (not to mention that plants have been known to die!!!). So let yourself pick something you like that might grow too tall, or even too wide for that matter, since you can always take it out, move it, and try something different. You might be ready for a change in ten years anyway. I've linked below to a nursery that has an amazing website, offering several view for each plant and which is very easy to navigate (go to the plants section, obviously). It is apparently a wholesale nursery ($3500 minimum order!) so you might not order from them (maybe your local nursery would...) but the site might facilitate your decision-making. They do have a good picture of the purple fountain beech, among others. Also check through their selection of Japanese maples whether they have any nice upright-growing varieties. have not ordered montgomery yet the top 4 i already ordered and the others i am looking at, and ha ha i got a fat albert- sorry could not help it. the montgomery was because it is a nice chubby short tree that i could decorate nicely at christmas time, does that sound silly? my acreage is 3 acres and i have wintergold, hoopsi, and walnut glen and the first 4 on the above list now. i have not looked into trees yet starting here for winter interest, i have a large tulip tree in front yard and a dwarf japanese maple of some kind at least i think that is it and a silver maple that i could do without but healthy so i will leave it for now. i want things that noone else in this area has in their yard, i want people to drive by and go wow and enjoy driving by my place and my place nothing fancy...yet!!!! (could get into that another time). that is the fun of it can you take a ordinary 3 acres and make it look stunning...i for sure think so. the design links you posted above i looked at both of them. i think the guy would have been better off with some lavender with the blues that would have made those trees pop jmho! and there was a link to some gardens you followed a path along some red dots, not sure if you know what i am talking about, anyway was not impressed with those gardens...nice cottage gardens but i am more into mounding plants and structure i guess. i want someone to be able to pick out a flower or tree and walk directly to it and admire it and not so much a jumbled array of things if you know what i mean. and just so you know i am just addicted to plants in general, if it grows i love it!!! my grandma was that way, my mom, and i am as well. thanks firefighter and katsura i needed to know about the shade part of it...i pick what i like then i ask questions to figure out where to put them...appreciate it so much.

Nate, the soil there is more clayish than I'd care for but not bad at all. It's definitely a good clay. I took more photos yesterday as framing is now in progress. Mike, I won't move them all. We, as a family, are going to sell my current home and some stuff I'll leave but, definitely not my favorite plants. I also have a lot of stuff in pots - so I'm hooked up to start. I'll also dig my conifers whenever I have too. I believe that transplanting is ok to do in mid-summer although nobody else here would probably 'risk' it. I'll just water them. The three car garage: South side where you can see a window framed and a larger open framed spot for a slider glass door. I'm getting this real nice attached greenhouse, and I'll be able to see into it from the window but to enter, I'll need to go out through the slider glass doors into the elements and then enter the greenhouse (about 2 steps). We did it this way so that instead of walking right from the slider into, more space will be usable inside the greenhouse. If the slider door went directly in, then I'd lose wall space. I don't know. Frankly, my mom thought it all up. The window though is nice to release heat into the basement or vice versa as well as to see into it from the basement. Bonsai specimens will be the majority of plants my greenhouse will be taking up space for. These are the newest in framing as never is a post needed from the basement floor holding up the above floor. Kind of an interesting photo for you construction junkies. It's become a reality. Got my big-hog John Deere lawn tractor and a real nice rhototiller that drags behind, and pretty soon, I'll be out there cleaning it up and seeding and everything else. I feel real lucky. What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. They also devoured a barberry, and hostas are out of the question. One day last winter we looked out our window and saw a doe eating birdseed out of one of our bird feeders! What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.
