any hints of fall color yet?

Just doing a quick survey - who is seeing hints of "real" fall color (i.e., not obviously stress related)?

Here, we have had a handful of obviously stressed maples (both saccharums & rubrums) showing various degrees of color for a month, but almost exclusively on street or parking lot trees (stressed from the poor, compacted soil, restricted root zones, & reflected heat, etc). The ones with unrestricted root zones are still all green.

However, more recently, some of the Liriodendrons are yellowing on their inner leaves only (we went from wet Jun/Jul to dry as a bone in August), & some of the wild A. rubrums on the roadsides are showing some yellow in the inner leaves. Not all of them, & it seems random, I'm not sure what the deal is there.

The first hints of "real" color I've seen are on sumacs & Black Gum/Tupelo (or we can just call it Nyssa sylvatica). Some of the Nyssas are showing a nice red on some of the inner leaves just the last few days. IME these do color pretty early, at least the wild ones do. Same for Sumacs. Both will peak by early October I think.

There are somethings trying it seems. Some crap apples have one or 2 nice coloured leaves. The virginia creeper i starting to turn red, but so far nothing up here at 48 latitude

We won't peak until about the last week of Oct, but most years there are just a few tiny hints of color starting in September. However, you have to be a dork like me who really looks for it.

I just planted my Northern Red Oak this summer and it has the most beautiful yellow and firey red color to it. It's beautiful! Since I'm right on the lakeshore the trees in our neighborhood are later to turn than farther inland...only just in the last few days has it started to really turn and be pretty. The sweetgums are less than impressive. The tree of heavens are bright yellow and nearly spent. The ashes are gorgeous, bright yellow, too. We'll see what this week has to hold.

The website I use to host my photos only displays tiny little postage stamp versions of them when I link to them or embed them into a post. So I will have to send them to someone that doesn't have this problem (which appears to be everyone else on this forum that posts pictures). I've opened two accounts on two different sites and they both do this - it doesn't seem to matter what size the photos are when I add them to my album. If I link to them using the url address the transmitted image is always tiny. The last thing I want is another web address and pass word to memorize.

Congrats on your new gardening adventure!! I wish I had easy access to horse manure for composting. Too bad you're not my neighbor AR Dramaqueen, I'd GIVE you all the perennial herbs you could want. Every year I beg friends and family and yes even strangers to come and take divisions from my yard. Herbs are very, very easy to grow in the ground but in my experience hard to keep happy in pots. If you can make a herb bed somewhere in the yard your herb gardening venture will be so much easier. Particularly when starting seeds, moisture levels are critical. You may want to check locally to see if there are any other herb gardeners close to you. Most gardeners are thrilled to take you on a tour and provide you with starter divisions. I still remember my dad taking me to a "yard sale" when I was about 10 years old. An elderly lady was selling her daylily plants in preparation for moving to a retirement village. We took an instant shine to each other and she spent a lot of time showing me how to pollinate flowers to make new hybrids, how to divide and set plants, etc. You could see that she had a lifetime passion for gardening and was happy to "set the seed" in another person. By the end of our visit to her yard I had a station wagon full of lovely plants and a head full of information. I don't know that she even let my dad pay her for the plants, I can't remember. I do remember that 6 or 7 years later my high school science project was on hybridizing daylilies and that I credited Pansy Corriher for the information and starter plants.

Y'all, this is been the absolutely worst winter...and I am in the south! (NC) Honestly, when I hear about the horrible weather in the NorthEast and MidWest, I just feel so bad for you and try to count my blessings here...but it has been pretty awful for us, relatively speaking. I just can't seem to get warm, and every time we get a pretty day in the upper 60's or heaven forbid, low 70's...it's like Mother Nature says..."ha-ha, PSYCH!" and sends some nasty cold rain or lovely ice that we enjoyed so last week. *eye roll* I am DONE. I will NOT complain about the heat and humidity this summer, if we are even so blessed as to have a summer. No sir, I will embrace sticking to my car seat and ringing out my shoes after a morning jog. I am so tired of being cold. :( Ah, well, we do have some Spring things trying to put on a show in our yard. Our forsythia is lovely, and my brave hydrangeas are putting out their new, baby leaves. No dogwoods yet, but cherry trees and Bradford pears are blooming. Of course, if it is cold and windy...that will decimate their blooms. Grass is green and pretty. I try to cheer myself up by looking at it from the confines of my warm house. Spring, please arrive! (I feel guilty saying that when y'all are dealing with much worse.)

Some birches and maples has started to turn already. Has to be drought stress as we havn't even been close to frost yet. Most trees are just happy after the warm summer though, and this is a major mast year for most tree species. I never saw that many acorns before.

I saw a Gingko yesterday (there are a fair number here as street trees) loaded with fruit! I was certain they were only planting the male clones, although last year I seem to remember just a handful of fruits on just this one Ginkgo, this year it's loaded.

I feel for the house that sits right behind that tree. That stink is unbearable.

Only the slightest hint here, tho sugar maple, birch, basswood, larch & other more "northern" tree-leaves have aged a bit from the summer heat. Other trees look their best now, like pines, bald/pond cypresses, dawn redwood, Amer sycamore, southern mag, honeylocust, etc.

I'm not sure I can tell the difference between colors from stress or fall. However, we've been living here for 6 years & usually everything starts to change towards the end of September and by mid October everything is in full fall color. By the end of October the show is pretty much over. This year has been different than any in the past...

This year many maples and other trees around here have started turning colors as of the last 2 weeks of August. It could be do to the cooler summer temps... not sure. Normally we are in the 90's to 100's during July/Aug. This year we only reached 80 a few times... it's been around mid 70's for the high and 50 for the low. Rainfall has been decent... no drought for 2013. I'm not sure what to think of it... but more and more are tuning.

We have a few trees showing some color here and there. A few sugar maples around have some strong oranges in the upper parts of the canopy. They'll probably peak in about 3-4 weeks.
