Yvonne's Salvia has been planted out

After pinching the tops out for a failed cloning experiment, they're back to around 8-10" tall. But they did develop new growth below the pinch. Some are stunted due to neglect when watering and fertilizing.

how did they get that big in containers?!

Or were they planted out a while go?

Do enlighten pls - i'm salvia-envious

mine are so tiny I can hardly see them, and they've been germinated for weeks.

Just got back from the grocery store and, lucky me, they had the special issue of Birds and Blooms. Haven't had time to read it yet but I'm just glad to find it. Have 4 patches of 3 plants each of Yvonne's and they are looking good. No blooms but some are pushing 1'. Plus gave a batch to my Mom who will appreciate them even more after seeing they are in print. When I get a chance, I'll try to make a PDF for anyone who can't get their hands on a copy. Hi Neil: I can only tell you my experience so far. The first year I WS'd on April 19 and had germination by April 27, 10 plants from 10 seeds, but the plants took forever to grow. It was June 23 before they were large enough to plant out and they sat there again forever until August. The result was the late blooms as shown in the pic. above, and great difficulty getting viable seeds. The second year I decided to grow them indoors under lights. I usually start them in the warmth of my heat vent, but nothing happened after 7 days. I then moved the little pot under the lights and in 2 days had sprouts. I had to do a few batches to get my quota of 10 seedlings (the late bloom meant many non-viable seeds) but they all showed up in 2-3 days after being put under lights. I was able to plant out a bit earlier and had my first blooms on Aug 1. This year I started my seeds between coffee filters (April 21) and did the 'under the lights' test. Seeds did nothing for 9 days, then put under the lights and germination in 2 days. Germination was again low (25% and 65%) to get my 10 plants but they are now 3 inches tall and will be planted out this weekend. I am very pleased with this result. So my advice is to try to start them indoors if possible so you can get a long enough growing season to give you enjoyable blooms and enough time to set viable seeds. I was always sceptical of instructions which said 'needs light to germinate' as I thought it was obvious, but they seem to need it whether you WS or grow indoors. I would also sow very lightly - just a sprinkling of soil over the seeds. These plants are really incredible: humming birds will fly in front of them for long periods. A certain pair would actually 'dance' in front of them daily. As far as soil is concerned they grew in a narrow bed of 're-claimed lawn' that was amended with a little composted cow manure. They were in full sun until late afternoon and were not fertilized in any way. You may also want to pray for a warm, early spring!!! You are in Zone 5a USA which is probably warms up a bit earlier than we do. If you get seedlings from your present sowing, you will probably get a late bloom, but viable seeds may be a bit 'iffy'. But go for it - they are worth the trouble. Good Luck!! Northerner.

These seeds are a little scarce and I was only given a few this past winter. I have 6 or 7 plants growing now that are about 2 1/2 feet tall and counting in mid Jul :). So things look really good that they will break 4ft and product lots of those seeds this September. There's a bunch of fellow hummingbird people (Link on "My Page") that will probably want some too, so we should start a list somewhere.

Hummers do use Yvonne's Salvia, but I don't know whether they favor them equally with Black and Blue. The seeds have not been introduced into commercial production so far. They have been passed from one person to the next as they harvest seeds from their plants. I will send you an email.

Ellen, I started those in February indoors according to her directions. The wintersown ones are just getting their second set of leaves now. They will probably catch up pretty quick now that we're in the 70s during the day and 50s at night.

I'll double the feedings on the wintersown ones for a month or two.

I sowed mine outside in jugs! Was I not suppose to?
I just did that last week.

Mary, mine wintersowed fine, but I wanted to do a few the way she did.

Prof, Once I had seedlings, I transplanted them into single cups. I gave them a half strength dose of Miracle Grow transplant fertilizer. Every week after that, they got a half strength dose of regular Miracle Grow. Now, they get nothing but some Tobacco fertilizer and a dash of 24-0-0 nitrogen. I'll fertilize with the tobacco mix every two weeks or so.

Prof, 6-6-18. That's the ratio. It's meant to establish strong roots and a very healthy, drought tolerant plant. The roots on these things were huge. I will probably add some flowering fertilizer to a few of the annuals later. 15-30-15. This will give good even growth and lots of flowers.

Ohsilly, lots of people have it. You might want to start on the seed exchange and ask for a trade. I've already given my leftovers away. It's a tall variety of salvia splendens.

Wintersown ones, as of yesterday with lots of rain, there were hints of sprouts- just little green bumps visible on soil surface. I've wintersown them for the past two years and they've grown to 48-50".

I'm also trying some this year sown indoors under lights. Germination was sporadic but I haven't killed them yet. The biggest are 6" tall and about 4 of them just gotten first true leaves. All have been transplanted to yogurt cups and look healthy. I only use organic stuff and their only food has been dilute fish fertilizer.

My last frost date is around mid-May so both the indoor and outdoor ones have some time to grow before they're planted outside.

ohsillyme, if you haven't heard from anyone, you can send me an email. I started late last year, so I don't have many seeds (got our first frost soon after some seeds were maturing); but I can send you about 15, which will give you thousands of seeds next year.

I only need a SASE (regular envelop is fine to save postage, no need to use bubbled envelop).

What is Tobacco Mix? Is it something you buy commercially? Does it go by some other name? I don't think I've ever seen anything with that name up here.

Prof, here's the bag. Check the ingredients. The potash is very high which is good for roots. I use it primarily on tomatoes. I put a handful alongside each plant a few days after they go in the ground. It's how my dad does it. And his plants have more tomatoes than leaves.
