Another oak tree question

This young oak tree has almost all branches on one side. It has been growing very close to old pine trees and obviously reaching for some light.
Would it grow some branches on the side that was shaded - lots of branches on the pines have been trimmed off after being broken in winter storm (Dec.2013)
I am not sure about age of the tree (I am new to this property), probably grew from acorn 'planted' by the squirrels.

and i am not sure what the question is ...

a tree grows.. as a tree wants to grow.. the impact of the pine pruning .. is left to the mysteries of ma nature ...

there is not much you can do.. to encourage branching on that side.. IMHO ...

looks like some kind of vine on it.. hope that has been killed ...

Thinning the pine trees will put more light on that side of the oak and it will branch more.

Will pruning the opposite side help? I BELIEVE (not know for sure but I think) pruning the opposite side will encourage faster growth from someplace in the short term and if you have left tiny branches on the shaded side it woukd be them.

It is a good experiment anyways.

with 50% of the canopy dead.. its dying ... how long it takes.. in tree years.. is unknown ... all dead stuff has to be removed.. and by that time... and cost.. you may as well remove it all .. yes.. its shocking ... welcome to home ownership ... it really doesnt matter why ... but if you want to find out.. you can hire a certified arborist to come and tell you why ... but you will still have to remove all hanging dead stuff... especially if it is overhanging your house .. or your neighbor.. whether you like them or not ... though we had a horrible MI winter.. none of my 20 oaks of various ages were affected ... you might want to ID and save some of the other trees as replacements for this one... dont make the mistake in getting rid of what might be quality trees.. already on the property ... but do get rid of weed trees .... and if your words failed.. as to what you mean by 50% not sprouting.. get us some pix ... ken

Trees should be planted so that the upper most root is at or very slightly above ground level, so your tree probably was not planted too high. The rootball should have had mulch over the top. It sounds like you didn't have any mulch at all! The real problem (besides the fact that your tree died) were the encircling roots, which probably didn't kill the tree, but probably would have caused major issues in the future when the roots girdled the tree and may have been an indicator of other issues that did kill the tree. From your description, it sounds like the tree was very potbound when it was planted (that's the normal cause of encircling roots). Whoever planted this tree, with the encircling roots left like that, didn't know much about trees. Hopefully, if it was the builder, your other trees somehow managed to get better treatment. If not, they may be headed for trouble later on too. It's hard to know for sure what killed your tree without more information, but it sounds like it may have been a blessing because the tree was headed for trouble in the future anyway. We are not in the metroplex, but in central Texas, about 20 miles south of Waco. We have wafer ashes and find that they are very satisfactory small trees. They are draught tolerant, wind resistant, and don't make a mess. Their only drawback (?) is that they self-seed. However, the seedlings are easily moved at about 6" of height, or pulled up. When they are in bloom in spring they have a delightful, slightly vanilla scent, and best of all, the wafer ash is host to the giant swallowtail butterfly. If you see a bird dropping with eyes on a wafer ash, you have a giant swallowtail caterpillar, so leave it alone and you'll soon have a lovely butterfly! Wafer ashes are understory trees, so plant them where they get some shade.

Yes, it's got that little sway at the base, but not much to be done about it, nor is it necessary. The tree will grow towards the light-as all trees do-and you can't nor should you really want to change that fact. A new tree-so to speak-grows around the "old" tree each growing season, so this will eventually become less apparent.

Slightly better photo; there are practically no branches on one side. Unfortunately, few that were there were broken when the broken pine limbs were taken care of.
The tree is slightly 'crooked', trunks first 7 or so feet are straight, but then it started looking for light. Not sure if it's worth saving. It is about 15feet tall, maybe bit more.And there isn't anything growing up the tree (vine or othervise).

As toronado suggested, maybe interesting experiment...some pruning and maybe even notching?

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Many oaks go through a gangly stage. I have one that looks slightly older and it's only starting to become oak-like.

I remember reading somewhere (have to look if I saved the article) that if you notch just above the dormant bud, it will encourage it to grow into a shoot.
If you nick just below the bud, it will weaken it or prevents it from developing a shoot...hope I am not confusing it & I believe it is used in bonsai. So I was thinking there is no harm in trying on a large tree, and it (the tree) will have also added benefit of drastically changed growing conditions (in this case, space available where there wasn't before - obstructed by pine branches - and considerably more light/sun.

Correct me if I am wrong.

ps: removing a small wedge of bark below a bud is referred as nicking;
remowing a wedge of bark above bud is referred as notching.

Really examine the trunk bark close up.

Is it possible that bare side could have partial girdling or other damage?

If so, be careful not to remove too much good wood, as it will delay recovery from any past injury.

I am not sure what you mean exactly.
I am not planning on removing any good wood. There are few very thin branches that were broken, you can see them in photo 'hanging' down (I think there is six of them) - these need to be pruned off. They are on side that was shaded & cluttered by pine tree branches.
There isn't any girdling or bark damage otherwise.

With nicking or notching, only small amount of bark is removed (not like air layering where bark is removed all around).
