I have a couple containers of lavender that has been sprouting for about a week now. I'm not sure what variety they are, as I collected the seeds from some existing unknown lavender from my yard last fall.

Yep. Hidcote blue was sown in February, sprouted in late March and was planted out on Friday.

Spanish Lavender has sprouted here, but it's still too small to transplant.

My Lavender just sprouted! last night. I forget the variety, as I didn't keep the seed envelope. It's an annual I think. First time to sow lavender. I sowed 2 containers, and they both have sprouted, altho so far only about 50%, hopefully more to follow.

I had better luck summer sowing - but I have a question - do you cut it back - if so when?

Cut it back before the growth gets woody after a flush of flowers. Woody stems won't grow new sprouts of green.

My Provence has yet to bloom. Planted it last year from a nursery grown start.

I've had sprouts of "Munstead" and "Lady" for a few weeks, but they're still hanging on tho the seed pods. I know there are more seeds in those containers, so I'm expecting more. I trim/cut lavender back every year to about 2-3" above the ground. Even the woody parts sprout new growth for me.

I did some lavendar the end of February and mine hasn't germinated. One of three containers out of 50 that hastn't sprouted yet - but the seeds were also from 2007 so maybe they were just too old. Well, I also tipped over the bottle they are in...so...that could be why too. Lol*

I sowed Lady Lavender on 2/10. They sprouted between 3/29 and 4/7. I did 8 jugs but also did a dozen under lights. I'm hoping if I plant some here and there in my beds it will keep deer away.

Wonder if it is too late for me.

Does it grow as big as it was before the trimming?

I never cut my Lavender cuz I don't know how, and it is woody.

I've got three Ladies.

I'm glad that so many of you have lavender. Still nothing in my container yet. It's not looking promising if some of you zone 5ers have sprouts, but I'll keep the container around and see what happens.

I have noticed a few self sown seedlings by one of my lavender munstead plants. I tried transplanting a few of these. It's the one place I have landscape fabric, unfortunately, so I have to kind of pull them carefully by the root, instead of digging all around. I don't know if they'll make it, but it's worth a shot.

Martha, I had never thought about cutting them back that much. I may give that a shot this year to see if keeps the plants looking nicer for longer. At the very least, I can trim them more than I have been and not treat them quite as delicately.

You could definitely still trim it back this year, and yes it grows back as big as it was. It also keeps a nicer round shape when it's been trimmed.

You have made my day Martha with this news! I had a "helper" in the garden cut my lavender almost to the ground a few weeks ago and I was beside myself.Thought he killed it. Now I will go look for new growth.

re trimming Lavender - I will take Martha's experience and do it, but don't do the same with Sage. I cut my Sage way down, and then learned that Sage grows on old growth [sage officialus - the common sage], so now I will have a very little Sage. I would have done better to leave it.

Re Lavender sprouts: Mine are growing, not so tiny any more. :)

My jug of Lavender Lady (dwarf lavender from burpee) has sprouted but not my jug of True Lavender.

I looked this morning, and I now have a Lavender Vera sprout! Just one so far, but still a very welcome sight :)

I just noticed a few tiny sprouts of Hidcote Lavender today! I'm so glad, I was afraid they were going to be a dud this year.

The one I bought on clearance last year came back with only two skinny twigs left. I didnt even see them until I raked the straw off. I hope I didnt hurt them.

Had one seedline last year, it was only about 4 inches high at the end of the year, havent seen it appear yet.

Didnt sow any cuz the seeds were hiding until a few days ago. Dont think its worth bothering now, I think they need a cold epriod.

Haven't sown any since 2004-5, but I've got lots of self-sown babies popping up from 'Vera' and 'Munstead'. Older plants have started new growth for the past 2.5-3 weeks or so too...so I wonder if seedling emergence goes hand in hand with new growth of established plants? Probably not but sounds nice LOL!

Doris, you can do the cold in your frig. Put the seeds in a small bag with moist mix. When the cold period is up take the bag and sprinkle the contents in your container.

I saw 'Vera' today at the nursery but did not buy any as they are listed as a z:5 plant. Wondered if you had that lavender, Vera. If I am going to buy a non-hardy lavender it will be a larger french lavender when they are sold in full bud and bloom.
