Help!!! My willow tree only grows on one side.

We planted a willow tree in our yard 2 years ago. The tree is watered often and is in an open area where there is great light throughout the day. But the tree will only grow on the Eastern facing side. I am very confused and it looks really bad. I could move it but I am concerned that it would kill it. This is extremely frustrating please help!!!

I have a willow just like that, and planted another one at another property I used to own. It was obvious that both of mine were growing toward light, and although they don't appear to have overhead shade, they are shaded to one side by a much larger tree and it blocks the sun on some branches during parts of the day. Are you sure you aren't having that situation?

I have a Pacific willow that is potted and doing the same thing, eventhough I've tried turning the pot. I've given out several Pacific willows this year, and they, too, have all grown in the same fashion.

I suspect a willow loosing a few roots won't be too harmed, and every hunk of root yanked out shall probably grow somewhere downstream. LOL. There are various willows suitable for hedging you know. Arctic willow coming to mind. If you have the room, just let them rip without shearing, they'll be tall enough for privacy and quite hardy. I have goat willow planted in a situation much like your's. It's a bog area where one of my springs runs off and very near drainage ditches maintained by the county. It is also about the same proximity from a septic field and I have had no issues whatsoever from it and it's been there years. It's a smallish, but very full tree and the roots are plenty far away from the field at that distance.

If that's an irrigation pipe I'm looking at, you don't have much room for a pick axe or any other heavy duty digging device. It does look like you've got some rock and clay base between the sidewalk and the sago. Have you tried fertilizing with palm fertilizer that has magnesium and manganese? That would be my first corrective action, if that didn't stop (arrest further yellowing) the yellowing, I'd dig that out (carefully) and amend the soil.

Nina, I am so sorry to hear about your tree. Must of really bummed you out. Hopefully you will plant another or find some kind of pole or wooden structure to build, even an arbor and hang many from that...If I lived there, I would allow vines with strong support to grow up that would partially cover the plants so as not to burn...)

I don't know anything about this plant, but it looks and sounds etiolated (stretching for light) to me! It seems to like bright light from a quick google search, so if it's not currently getting that, that would definitely help a lot!

I have a willow that i planted 2 years sgo that is the same…did yours survive? i think the trunk on mine is very small for its height and it kerps getting blown over
