Which nursery to buy from?

I want to order Gypsy Carnival and Cherry Parfait for spring, but am having trouble finding a nursery that carries them. The two I located are not familiar to me. Do you know them? Good plants/service? Plantwise, is one better than the other?

Their description: "Grade #1, bare-root."

The rose price is slightly cheaper, but I imagine shipping to Kansas might cost more.

Roses Inc. Tulsa (Oklahoma)--

The description says "These are roses removed from 3 gallon containers, pruned for planting, and shipped priority mail with the leaves and feeder roots in tact. These are not dormant roots or small gallon starts."

The rose price is slightly higher, but the shipping costs should be less?

And can you tell from the descriptions whether the roses are grafted or own-root? Don't know why I have such trouble finding that info.

Regan's ships very large bareroots grafted to Dr Huey. I ordered from them last year and all the plants did well.

Garden Valley Ranch has both of them, but I have not ordered from them. I have received a couple of bareroots from Regan's, nice size, excellent condition. Heirloom Roses has Cherry Parfait but not GC. S&W Greenhouses also has CP, and I have always received excellent plants from S&W. Hortico has both (prob. grafted on multiflora) but you takes your chances.

Grow oak from acorn or buy from nursery?

I have a bur oak that i bought from lowes that I planted in Fall 2005. It was probably 5 feet tall. Maybe 4.5 feet tall for 5 gallon. It grew about 8 inches for 2006. This year, it has grown 2 feet already and is in its 2nd growth spurt right now. It's amazing how much growth it has put on this year. I was hoping for 3 feet of growth and it looks like I might get more than that with all the rain! I had shumard oak that REALLY GREW this spring after planting it in fall 2005. Unfortunately, that violent storm over a month ago snapped it in half. Looks like for 5-7 gallon, 4-7 feet height, it takes a year to establish roots before they really take off in 2nd year. I can confirm that oak trees grow VERY LONG TAPROOT. I planted a bunch of acorns in the small cups and didnt think about roots since they have grown only 3-4 inches. When i took them out of the small cups, i was shocked to see all those long tap root circling around in the cups. Lesson learned. It's best to air prune them! I am curious how fast oak trees grow when planted as an acorn. I probably will experiment with that on my "retirement" land (thats a long time away :( ) and there are area that I want to grow trees for privacy. There's no water there for me to water container trees so Im stuck with planting seeds or very small seedlings. Anyway, the oak trees that I grew in small cups last year hasn't really grown very much this year. I had to prune the tap root off. Apparently from reading about tap roots, they do not like their tap root pruning and will significantly slow the growth. Oh well.

As I said in my original post, our Mannington Adura is glue-down. The flooring company we used refuses to do a click-lock on LVP installs. Period. If a customer insists upon click-lock they will sell them the flooring materials but will not do the install. They said they have had too many complaints with click lock installs and it just was not worth the trouble for them. If you read install instructions for almost any flooring, having a level floor is critical. All of the mfgs specify their tolerances for uneven subflooring and they're mostly all very tight (narrow) ranges. I think a lot of DIYers forget or don't pay much attention to that. We had to, our flooring joists are wildly uneven and no free-floating floor would have worked.

Interesting website at Tulsa. I could not determine if they sold grafted or ownroot, but they are shipped alive, so they must be growing them in a greenhouse. I tried calling, but the message center does not allow you to leave a message unless you know the extension. I'll try again later. I have already order from Regan's, but usually try to avoid DR. Huey if possible. They happened to have a few roses that I could not find anywhere else. I've always heard good thingss about them.

Not all of Regan's roses are grafted on DR HUEY. They buy their roses from about 13 different suppliers, including 2 Canadian ones. Both of those graft onto Multiflora. It appears tho, that only one of the two, Hortico, carries GYPSY CARNIVAL. It just depends on where they ordered it from. I would call them and ask where they are getting it from.

As for CHERRY PARFAIT, I have two. One is on DR HUEY and the other I purchased from Hortico under the name of JUBILE DU PRINCE DE MONACO. At the time, I did not know these were the same rose. I only recently found out that the name was changed for sale here in the US to CHERRY PARFAIT. The one form Hortico waaaay outshines the one from here in the US. The Multiflora rootstock does much better here in my climate.

If you don't want the DR HUEY rootstock, you might consider ordering directly from Hortico. Altho they don't show GYPSY CARNIVAL as currently being in stock. Hortico carries a huge selection of roses, and some very hard to find. And their shipping charges are actually quite reasonable.

Thank you, everyone, for the input. I don't know that I have a preference about rootstock on grafted roses--I don't have any experience with different ones to base an opinion on. However, I have a particular reason why I might want grafted roses this time--need the extra vigor at the beginning to get them going. My garden will be on the citywide garden tour in June, so I want these roses to get growing as quickly as possible. Otherwise, I have no objection to own-root.

Not sure I want to order from Hortico unless necessary. Too many posters have complained about getting the wrong rose from them. Definitely do not want a bitty one from Heirloom under the circumstances. Looks like Regan Nursery is fine unless I find a better source.

Does anyone know if multiflora rootstock is better in Kansas than Dr. Huey would be?

Beth, thank you for reminding me of the alternate name for Cherry Parfait. I had forgotten that.

Diane, I will check out Garden Valley Ranch tonight. Seems to me I remember some good things being said about them.

mgleason56, let me know if you find out more about the Tulsa operation. Tulsa is only about 1.5 hour drive from me. Not that I plan on driving there, but since it is fairly close, I'd like to know if they are a good source.

Roses Tulsa is a reseller of varieties which he buys bare root and pots up. It is basically a one man operation with hired help during the growing season. I believe he has been in business about 4-5 years now. The rootstock would depend on which wholesaler he bought from. He does get some roses from Texas Wholesalers so some of his roses are on multiflora rootstock. On occasion he has had some on fortuniana as well.

In z5 multiflora does best.

I've ordered from Hortico for years. I've had a few wrong ones but lately they've had a change in management and seem to be doing better. Even offering to replace a rose that didnn't grow. Could well have been the fault of my garden soil as it sometimes doesn't like what I plant.
