Ann, could you tell me exactly what to look for with RRD? I glanced at your E-book, which got me thinking. I know the fast growth and very thorny canes along with the purplish leaves. I thought some roses had leaves that were burgudy/purplish when they started out as new growth and then later turned to green. At least some of mine do. Does that mean I might have RRD? I am worried now that I came across a couple of RRD post and you seem to really know your stuff. I know you are very busy but if you could give me some insight I would very much appreciate it!

asthma, I'm not any expert on this subject, but I can assure you that the new growth on many roses will be burgandy/purplish. Don't worry about that at all. In fact, that is one of the beauties of some roses. Relax and enjoy it.

From what I've read, you will know RRD by its really ugly, nightmarish, distorted growth. But I'm sure Ann will show up and give a more precise description of RRD.

I repeat: Don't worry about normal-looking red healthy growth--that is what you want!

When RRD first came into this area, I sort of decided that the single adjective "Aberrant" covered how odd it was.
And that simply means that it looks different (really different) from the other growth on that same rose or on the same cultivar in other parts of your (and others) gardens.
Then I had aberrant growth show up on what were left of roots of a multiflora in the middle of a drought. There was NO reason for all of the growth. And there was a lot of growth, but that rose had had no rain for two months and there were cracks in the earth around the stem with the EXCESSIVE AND UNEXPECTED. And that way I got two more adjectives to describe the disease.
Our best way to catch RRD is to know what's normal. The reddish growth is normal on teas in the fall and spring. But you'll get a feeling for how long it stays red and when it should start to turn green. (Take a look at the American Pillar linked below. The color stood out on it because it didn't look like the same new growth on any other cane on a really big rose.)

Finally, when I've decided it's aberrant growth, I look for three different kinds of aberrant growth.

I have a large garbage can next to my washing machine. When I do laundry, I put the water line into the garbage can and let the rinse water flow into it. I use a 5 gallon bucket about half full (so it won't be very heavy) and use it to water a lot of the plants in my back yard. I've been using less detergent since I started doing this, just to be on the safe side, and even newly planted plants do fine with it. Soap has a bit of nutrient in it anyway. And you can add some fertilizer to the water, and the soap acts as a surfactant and helps it absorb. It's nothing but a plus in my book. Jeri, my grandmother lived in a house with the dooryard fenced, too. That's where she had her flowers and small vegetable garden. The fence kept the chickens and wild critters out. She watered with her wash water, too, and everything was always green and flourishing. East Texas, btw, but I think people did it everywhere in the world, frankly.

I use a spray that is called Lime-sulphur. I buy it from our Farmer's Co-op (and the brand I have now is Bionide). It's a product used by orchards, as well, so that might help you search for it in larger than pint size. Mine has dormant strength dilution of one cup LS per gallon of water. Judy, Mid to late Feb may be too late for you. Start watching in late December. There is a point where the buds start to swell and you'd have about a week to react. The LS dormant strength needs to be applied by someone wearing a serious respirator AND goggles AND old clothes. The LS doesn't wash off the rose canes and you don't want to spray it onto the side of your house. It stinks of sulphur=rotten eggs. As for when to prune: you can take dead canes off anytime. And for some of the thornier roses, cutting the dead canes out is easier to do when you are armed with heavy clothes protecting your arms.

They seem to be very easy to work with. Move them during winter while they are dormant. Potted plants can be planted any time you want. I have rooted them at just about any time of year, but make sure to use a very well drained rooting mix. They are not happy with being in soggy soil. You will probably need to protect them the first winter...plant out in the ground, but cover with something like a soda bottle, milk jug, etc....use mulch to keep soil temps even.

I respectfully disagree camlan. Opening an old post and adding a comment or question does get attention. Some old posts have valid info & adding a question may illuminate the older posts. Yes, often the OP is long gone, but if I see an old post date come up to the top of the list, it may have something new I want to see in it (it may also be a spammer adding a link to sell something but that's a whole 'nother issue). This forum is full of dreadfully old posts, but that's because it's an inactive forum. I do look at refreshed posts form 2003. Maybe I just have a comment to someone else's comment that doesn't warrant a whole new post. I'm pretty sure I don't need a tutorial on how to create a post.... Now if you're saying folks are opening old posts & putting totally unrelated stuff onto them, then I agree with you, but that doesn't seem to be the problem you're complaining about.
