Hey anybody on here that is WSing in thier front yard, do you live close to Nottingham HS in Syracuse?

I do and on the way to Wegmans, my husband pointed out I'm not the only nut that has milkjugs and other containers outside. 5 minute walk from my house. Maybe we can swap plants when it gets warmer?

LOL! I hope they see this and post or email you, but if they don't, you could always stop when you see them out gardening once it gets warm out. I have become good friends with my gardening neighbors who were referred to as the people crazier than me by my husband since their whole front lawn is full of flower beds! : )

Interesting to see how the totals vary throughout the US. The key is comparing to average precipitation. I haven't found the official numbers for precipitation but we where down about 50% for the year. The driest months dropped in during the typical wettest time of the year and also the hottest meteorological summer on record. 2012 was officially the warmest year on RECORD. This past summer I learned to hate sunny days and fall in love with cloudy rainy days. It was so unbelievably brutal. I will never complain about a rainly day in my life after establishing a garden during the 2012 drought.

Hi Vera, Even though you haven't planted many containers, we ARE going to insist that you take pictures of your beautiful establsihed beds! Being able to see what your "babies" will turn into when you are a newbie is so important! Your pics are the reason I have a flat started that has about 35 blue flax seeds sprouting in it right now!!!!! I loved looking through the pics. I was pretty new when I added my photo, so does being on that thread make me an oldie? (smile) Nancy

Since this thread is about mountain lions in NY I will repeat this post here---November 2011 I saw a large dead red cat on left shoulder of Southbound I-81 just after the Whitney pt exit. The face was rounded-a cross between a raccoon kind of face and a domestic cat.-sweet/round face very long rope like (thickish) tail w.straight fur-curved around towards the front- height of a St. Barnard but thin build like a Dane. The legs were long. The color was solid orange red. I was traveling at 65mph and by the time I had processed what I saw it was too late to easily pull over. I was very surprised. I posted a description of what I had seen on Topix in the hope someone else had seen it and could let me know what it was. All I got was a few snide comments. Then I found this: "05-05-2011, 06:48 PM #1 Crokit crokit Join Date: Dec 2010 Posts: 158 Mountain lion sighting First, let me state that I have all my faculties, excellent eye sight, and am not given to exaggerations. Today, while traveling south on Interstate 81, between Syracuse and Binghamton, I saw a Mountain Lion / Cougar/Panther, pick your noun.!! 100% positive, absolutely no doubt. There is ZERO chance that it was anything else. The only other thing it could have possibly been ( other than a live mountain lion/cougar/panther ) is a full body mount of a mountain lion/cougar/panther and someone pulling a prank. It was less than 100yds off the West side of the road, sitting on top of a section of rock/cliff that the highway had been cut through. It was sitting on it's haunches, leaning forward, ears forward, looking down onto/across the highway. It was about 30-40 feet above the highway. Just before the " Castle creek 1 mile " highway sign. When I screamed " holy F%^K, a mountain lion, scaring the S#$T out my buddy who was driving almost lost control at 75 mph. An absolutely beautiful animal, well muscled, excellent specimen. Up until now, when ever I've seen reports of sightings, I've taken them with a grain of salt. No more! Anyone know of any other recent reported sightings in that area? Wldnerness: Can you put me in touch with any of the state Dec/Rangers/etc from that area?" And my post on Topix was as follows: Justwondering East Syracuse, NY 1 huge red fox, moutain lion or lynx on I-81 (S) near Castle Creek Nov 9, 2011 Did any see a dead huge cat like animal on the southbound side of I-81 about a mile closer to Syracuse then the exit for Castle Creek. It was on the left lying an its side, obviously dead and huge. If you did see it, or heard someone else talking about it, what was it? It looked like it had a body like a mountain lion, a long tail with long fur-not bushy and a face that was rounder like a lynx.Its color was pretty uniformly red-not mixed or strips or anything like that. I was moving too fast and, once I had processed what I saw, I had gone too far to see it. Apparently someone picked it up, probably for its fur, because it was gone soon thereafter. I saw it at around 10:40am Tuesday morning. If you did not see it but are familiar with the wild life around there, any ideas? Any information would be appreciated. Hunters and Wild life experts,(to those needing to be sarcastic, save it), what do you think? These two sightings are at identical places. I do not believe that they are both mirages. Also, if the one I saw was young--it would not have been as visible to a driver on I-81 6 months earlier. The one I saw was not so big that it would have been very visible to drivers if it were on the top of a hill. That means that the one I saw could have been the adolescent offspring of the one seen by the earlier poster. If so, maybe there is a den nearby. I know exactly where I saw the dead animal so a wildlife person or ranger could easily investigate. If the other poster saw the parent in May and I saw a dead adolescent one in November I bet that there is one that has set up a residence in the area.

Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! You succeeded very well in getting the look you wanted while saving money along the way. Congratulations, and thank you for the pictures and great detail and supply list.

Well, it's not me unless you're driving way east toward Utica. lol.
You can see my containers from the road, encircling a tree, and I often wonder what people driving by must think!

I have a brand new neighbor this spring (the lady who lived there previously was a heck of a gardener) and I'm crossing my fingers he doesn't complain about the 'mess'.

We haven't met him yet, but he sometimes beeps when he drives by, so he must be fairly friendly, right? :) I'm kind of frightened to go talk to him - he has 2 HUGE black dogs. Someone with dogs that big laying on the front lawn all day may be flying the 'go away' flag. lol.

That's me, that's me!!!! This is my 1st year WS. Put some containers on the front of the house and some on the southern (well, ish) side.

Okay, I'm not in New York, but I think this is great! Two winter-sowers 5 minutes away from each other, making a connection on the WS forum!

Makes me wonder if there are any other nuts (I mean WSer's) that close by here? Although no one can see my containers, they are behind the house...

sdpa, You have a Great Dane right?
If it's you, I said hi a few times to your husband when walking in the area last summer. With so many hills, it gives you a great workout.
I have only had a few things pop up so far. Tons of poppies, marigolds, ect. If there is anything you want that I have extra of, will let you know. I have extra cardinal climber and LOTS of salvia, that I have started indoors. My Datura's are just starting to pop up too. If you drive down behind the HS along the parking lot for the field. I'm the 1 that has had a raised tomato bed along the driveway for the last 2 summers. We bought this house in 2004 and we are slowly trying to fix it up. It's getting easier since my daughter is getting older and I can spend more time outside. This year is gonna be a big year for me. We are putting some big beds in and putting 2 more tomato beds in. The only thing I really hate here, is all the trees. I love full sun plants, but we have all these trees here :(

Yup, the dane belongs to us.
The hills are great for walking / running - love 'em!
I kept a list of what I WS when but I've not been as good about noting when things sprout. So far I have sunflowers sprouting and others that I need to check on my list to see what they are.
I'm going to do marigold this week - I have a small portable greenhouse that I'm going to put them in on our front walk. We'll see what happens.

Ah well, I'm in Oswego (aka redneck country), so they kinda expect junk in the front yard up here...oops! did I say that?
lol.
I have jugs in the front garden bed, but most of them are in back.
I'm further away from you folks, but I'd be in for a swap if you have one :-)

Hi Disneynut! It's me-Phyl in Baldwinsville (remember when you came out to pick up the roses last fall?) I forgot which ones you chose. I hope they do well for you this summer. We never got to winter-protect last fall, so ours have a lot of winter damage...just pruned 8 this afternoon.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi!

Hi Phyl,
I hope warm, warm weather wishes for you, so you get alot of growth on your roses. Both bushes did ok, 1 better than the other. I put TONS of chopped leaves surrounding all of mine, but I don't have near as many as you, yours really would have been a chore to protect, LOL. I put them in front of the porch my husband built for our front door, but I plan on moving all my rose bush's to the side of our driveway closer to the house in the very begining of May. They will get more sun there. Will let you know how they are doing later in the season.

If anybody is willing to make a drive to my house (I don't drive) I am more than willing to share my extra's. I have started so much and I knowwww, I will have alot of extra's. This is what I have started this year in the flower department. WS means winter sowed and SI is my stuff under lights inside. I am starting the rest of my stuff not dated, today for WS, except for my Zinnia's and Dahlia. Those I'll start on the week I have off in May.

Hi, PHYL!!!! I picked up 3 of your rose bushes last year! So far, so good. I think I did a good job of protecting them for the winter but time will tell!

DISNEYNUT...Wow!!! That's a lot of seeds. I'm more than happy to walk over (up the hill) w/ my wagon and relieve you of some of your extras. I didn't plant nearly as many as you but am happy to share what I have! Any extras I have I'm going to add to the roses I planted in the median last year - I got sick and tired of looking at the weedy grass and metal median so I planted some roses from Phyl, iris, coreopsis and I think that might be it.

Hey sdpa. I'm pretty sure you already thought of this, but be careful planting stuff there. The city has the right when they are mowing and trimming to destroy anything planted in these. You might get somebody on clean-up that doesn't give a crap and mows over everything with the commercial mowers. You could clean up the small area yourself and they might just skip it completely then. Just a thought.

Hey I was also wondering about vermicomposting? I had considered trying this but have no idea where to start. I plan on putting compost bins in my backyard too, but wanted something small for the winter.
