orange attack

Hi Everyone, I am wondering if anyone else has gone completely cuckoo over the color orange? I have gardened for 30 plus years and would never have allowed it in my garden beds. Now I have a full blown orange addiction this year! Even bought an orange purse for crying out loud! Last night as I was watering my sea of babies I noticed orange cosmos, tithonia, 3 kinds of orange zinnias

and other orange flowers I have never heard of. I find myself looking at plants that have good lloking foliage to be planted ext to the orange flowers. Those kind of new coneflowers that are orange with a touch of pink almost make me drool!!!!! Sybil

IMHO, you can never have too much of the colour orange in your gardens!

I have always loved orange in my garden...yellow too....and bright purple...:)
I love all colours and don't actually reject any, but my garden definitely reflects my love of those colours.

Inspect for aphid or spider mite infestation just to make sure, okay? Fireblight often begins with the wilting of the terminal growth, but it's too early to tell you if that might be the problem. Pyracantha as a genus is prone to fireblight, but some species and cultivars are quite resistant. I do not know into which category your plant falls. Warmish and rainy conditions set your plant up for a fire blight infection, as does excessive vegetative growth induced by nitrogen fertilization and improper pruning. If this were my plant, I would be sorely tempted to prune those wilted terminals clear down to healthy looking growth. Dip pruners in rubbing alcohol or other sterilant between cuts.

Dodder is one crazy plant, that's for sure. Be sure to read up on it, so that you know more about this parasite. It can spread extremely rapidly. Seems like I've seen it in the yellow silly string color, as well as orange. Maybe? Anyway, you may even want to contact your local extension office to see if they have any interest in helping you control your dodder. In some locations, it is considered a very dangerous weed of agricultural crops. Here is a link that might be useful: Lotsa images of dodder....so weird

What is attacking my white pines?

Long distance diagnosis is never terribly reliable, but your description and photo suggest white pine blister rust. This pathogen infects 5 needle pines and requires a member of the ribes family - currants and gooseberry - as a secondary host. Usually it first appears on branches rather than the main trunk, but the bleeding sap is typical. States where white pine is/was an important timber tree such as VT, NH, and ME once had extensive programs to eradicate currants and gooseberries and some prohibited the importation or cultivation of these fruits. I would contact your state forestry department or county extension service for a more definitive diagnosis and recommendation for treatment if any exists. White pine blister rust would have no effect on spruces or any other conifers except 5 needle pines.

I NEVER liked orange in my gardens...probably because I always thought of common orange calendulas from bad childhood memories LOL!

Not until I decided to give Cosmic Orange Cosmo a try did I fall in love ever after! So far 13 seedlings and more heads peaking out of the surface ((yeah))
I'm gonna look for Bells of Ireland seedlings in the garden and be sure to transplant them in with these guys. Also hoping Green Envy Zinnia will have a few come true...
Now I'm adding Citrus Cocktail Calendula and another mix of Calendula (from trade) to the beds this spring and Giant Cactus Zinnia :D

I love the bright orange tithonia and so do the butterflies. My husband when he saw them liked them too and said I should plant them every year. I've winter sowed both the orange and gold.I like the bright colors of the nasturtiums too.

I also would NEVER have orange in my garden, except the occasional marigold.

Then....

About two years ago I happened to get several packs of free seeds. And they were all orange. Nasturtiums, Bright Lights cosmos, tithonia, and calendulas... and I was hooked!

I still have to admit to favoring my pinks and purples, but now I don't gasp in horror when I see an orange flower, lol. And I've continued to sow lots of oranges and reds and I don't think I would be without them now.

Two of my favourites are Siberian Wallflower and a daylily sown by the birds in the gardens. It has the colour of an ice cream I used to eat as a child called Buried Treasure. It's a beautiful pastel orange. YUM!

Now that you mention it, I do have a lot of orange...LOL
Orange geraniums and I've been dying to get my dirty little hands on the orange phlox too!

No oranges in my gardens. I have a neighbor with a new flower bed that takes all my orange bloomers. My calendulas are a soft yellow. Now, pink...I used to avoid pink but now find that I am generally attracted to the pink variety of most plants. When we moved to this house the master bedroom was pink. It was several years before I got the room painted blue and think my subconscious accepted pink as my new favorite color. So it goes...
