I have Reconciliation from RU, purchased last year. The plant was nice and relatively big but somehow does not grow, so far a stingy bloomer although it is not supposed to be, barely alive. Maybe it doesn't lot the place where it is planted. I will try to replant to another spot maybe than it will get a fresh start.

I have several Harkness roses; most of them are grafted and purchased from Pickering. I have to check my list as to how many I have.
I have Compassion that is a great climber, I try to grow it as a shrub - healthy, and the flowers are beautiful and very fragrant. I cannot recall how long is their vase life but I like to cut them because of the flower shape, color and intensive fragrance.
Savoy Hotel is very productive HT, bushy, not very tall and always covered with blooms.
Samaritan, Well being are about 4' tall shrub roses with nice shaped flowers and both are fragrant.
Ann Harkness, a floribunda though has no fragrance produces very long lasting flowers both on the bush and also as a cut flower. One of my very best Harkness is Irish Hope very healthy foliage, pale yellow fragrant flowers on long stems in abundance.

Fryer is an other English breeder I learnt to appreciate, I love his Special Occasion, Scent-Sation, King's Macc, and the newest in my garden: Sunset Celebration aka Warm Wishes proved to be a productive rose by year 2 and the long stemmed roses last amazingly well in vase. I got my Fryer roses also from Pickering.
Worth checking Palatine roses, they also have a few Harkness and Fryer roses and they grafted plants are huge and healthy. I ordered a Special Occasion from them because I got an unusually weak specimen from Pickering and it seems they do not even offer this rose any more.

Lady Mitchell is a very good Harkness rose which is available own root from Heirloom or grafted from Edmunds. I've grown it for years as an own root and I find it to be exceptionally disease resistant, with consistant blooming on a shorter then average shrubby bush. The blooms are unaffected by the heat. I don't grow Reconcilliation.

I have Lawrence of Arabia (Samaritan), Royal Ballgown, Livin' Easy, and Easy Going. My favorite rose is LofA -- wonderful blooms -- but to be honest, I put up with a lot bs on the plant and not only must one dead head, but one must prune out the dead ends which are numerous and unlike other roses. Royal Ballgown also has quite a bit of bs. Livin' Easy and Easy Going are excellent with disease resistancy and put on a wonderful show when in full bloom. My two cents worth -- CJ

Zip..., I do not know if your zone 9 indicates Florida or California. Margaret Merril (Harkness) is very blackspot prone and sickly on the east coast but everybody loves it on the west coast. Not HT but a floribunda and very fragrant - I tried to grow it many years ago but in coastal(east) zone 8 it was more of a headache than anything else.

Samaritan is a beauty, as is Irish Hope. Both are very productive and have beautiful foliage here.

'Margaret Merril' couldn't begin to compare with 'French Lace'. Bye bye Margaret.

I have also 'Pure Gold' aka 'Sir Stephen Redgrave', which is described as a 3'-4' floribunda. Mine has decided it is a vigorous 12' climber. Fine, no problem, I just wish I had known that it would get that size. Wonderful substance to the flowers.

I love Jacqueline du Pre, too, but last winter's freeze hit her hard, and we may lose her.
Champagne Cocktail is neat -- if only it would bloom more.

Overall, I've found that the Harkness roses we've had here have been immune to powdery mildew and rust. Remarkably good roses!

Rosemary Harkness is new to me, hasn't bloomed much but what can you expect in a summer like this? The blooms it had were lovely enough but had a knock down fragrance.

I'm trying Champagne Coctail again, had some bs and gave it away but the neighbor's plant is so pretty I had to try again.

I love my INternational Herald Tribune..also grow Compassion which has one of the best fragrances and is a great healthy plant.

I gave my reconciliation away because in our climate, I never got the lovely color blend just a golden apricot color. Also it was a stingy bloomer but the plant was very healthy.

I think Lady Jane is also from Harkness. Same story on the color, mine would not have the pink blending to it but the flower form is so pretty that I kept it even though it's mostly apricot. It looks nice next to Medallion and is a well behaved and tidy shrub.

I never got Margaret because I heard she was dissapointing in a hot climate. I have a wonderful french lace bush but would like a rose that color with some fragrance.

Is the Rose sold by Heirloom and renamed Amazing Grace from Harkness? If it is, it's my favorite without question. I would have a whole row if I had the room.

No, Amazing Grace is a Cocker rose. And you are right it is gorgeous and super fragrant. Too bad that in my climate it balls very often but it gets too much shade. I will give it the prime spot that Maria Shiver takes up now by doing nothing.

Ceterum: I have Samaritan and Compassion on my wish list too. I have finally realized they are great roses. Compassion is one of the most popular climber in England.

My favorite Harkness roses are Amber Queen (yellow floribunda) and the low climber Times Past.

Last night I checked Pickering's catalog. Pure gold is one of the roses that they offer last time this year.

I have found that roses bred in Great Britain are usually okay in British-type climates, i.e. cool, coastal marine climates. Anywhere else they are iffy. Of the ones that Beth shows, I have Renaissance and Seven Seas. I had Alexander, but he didn't like our heat and died. The Renaissance and Seven Seas hold their own. I also have Royal Philharmonic which looks nice during the first flush in May, but after that it looks ratty because of our heat. So, I would say beware of British roses in a non-British climate. Some may be okay; others won't.

My Pure Gold was from Heirloom. It is own-root. Vigor is not a problem.

I will have it! Hooray! Now, if it were just as easy to get 20' extra land added to out lot then I should not eye which roses to take out to give the newcomers space.

Remember to make room for Barock (Tantau) too , you are going to like this rose. And I do like many different shapes of rose flowers, but cupshaped roses are my favorites. Compassion has taking a long time to grow on me. In warm weather it really smells nice.

And Beth: I can not believe all the gorgeous roses you grow. Also nice to see your pics on HMF. Now is that renaissance as fragrant as they say?

I grow L'Aimant, Irish Hope and Octavia Hill. L'Aimant is new this year but had some disease issues...hopefully it will be better next year. The fragrance is to die for.

Irish Hope is very healthy and has gorgeous blooms and glossy dark green leaves. I love it. Unfortunately the Japanese Beetles love it too....it is the most afflicted of over 240 roses here by the beetles.

Octavia Hill is wonderful. Mine is very vigorous, healthy and blooms in clusters of loveliness. Its only downfall is lack of scent.

Both Irish Hope and Octavia Hill are grafted, from Pickering. I recommend them both.
