Yoshino Cherry Leaves Turning Brown

Hello everybody,

Last week I planted a Yoshino cherry tree in my front yard. We got the tree from local nursery in Cleveland. The tree looked very healthy when we got it. However within 4/5 days the leaves are starting to turn brown. I noticed ton of black spots on the leaves and it is spreading fast. I noticed a small opening in a trunk that looked like canker infection but I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t know if it the case or not. Here are some pictures that I took yesterday. Any suggestion on what could be causing this?

Check soil moisture around and INSIDE root-ball.

Same thing happening to my yoshino cherry, purchased at a garden center in westlake, oh. It's been planted for less than a week and looks like it's dying. When you suggest to check the moisture, is that because it needs a LOT of water? Or little water?

Hi Guys, I really need help. I bought two cherry trees for my yard and they have small pin sized holes in them at the store. I assumed it was bug damage, and one of them after planting got better (Kwanzan) but the Yoshino is just drooping and full of holes. The leaves are turning yellow and most are just full of holes. I read it might be shothole disease, how do I treat this? I bought a tree bug treatment not knowing what it was and it didn't help one bit. Does any fungicide work for this disease? I can post a picture soon but it's basically small holes all over the leaves that are brown around the outside of the hole. I am afraid I am losing my tree and the drought here is not helping. I water it every chance I get but I don't want it to die. The Kwanzan still has holes but it looks much better than the Yoshino. Can the larger trees in my yard catch this fungus? Please help! L

Both trees were planted the end of April. It is a major drought here, I must water the trees almost every other day or every three days. Sometimes daily. I don't water too much. We live in a very hot open field, and it has not rained in 3 months. I could not dig a hole now if I tried. It's hard clay soil. (and yes I read cherry trees can stand droughts and clay soil before I bought them) I don't know what to tell you, that I didn't already say. they are many small holes all over the leaves, new and old , brown around the center of the hole. It doesn't have shock. My other trees (smaller ones) have it too. Both have normal leaf growth, and new shoots and are growing well they just have holes all over the leaves. I didn't want to leave this issue too long and risk the tree dying. The Kwanzan is much better than the Yoshino. I can get a pic tomorrow.

Katie, before you treat for fungus check for Ambrosia Beetle borers. Ambrosia beetle is Asian, having gotten to the SE US in 1999 (port of entry : Charleston, SC) and is spreading fast, mostly due to the transport of infected stock in the nursery trade. I've seen trees look great one day and be just about dead the next from the little suckers. They like trees with smooth bark. Look closely and carefully all over the trunk of your trees for little (and I mean pretty small, about the size of the head of a pin) holes. These holes will often have a little sawdust sticking out of them or dribbling down the trunk below them. I've seen as few as two and as many as 15 holes on one tree, so be sure to look closely. They're easy to miss. If you find such holes, there's no saving your trees. Do call your county extension agent ASAP to alert them to the presence of this new pest in the area. And ask them what to do about your infected trees and how to protect other trees nearby. Fortunately the insects aren't very mobile on their own, so they're not likely to spread all over your yard. Having said all that, I hope you don't have Ambrosia Beetle. But the symptoms you describe -- catastrophic wilting of entire trees -- is symptomatic of a major system meltdown in the plant, and such problems are usually due to borers in the main circulation system of the tree or serious root damage of some sort, which can be caused by a fungus. Has your tree been getting enough water? If you recently dug up the tree and replanted it, that could likely have compromised its root system and made it difficult for the tree to uptake adequate water, even if the soil is soaking wet. New leaflets turning brown often means the plant either does not have adequate water or vigor to sustain their continued growth.

But, you probably have a dual situation. The tree has a fungal issue, black spot, that went unnoticed when the leaves were green. Now, it is easy to see with the leaves yellowing from transplant shock. Inspect what you intend to purchase at the nursery before you buy. Anything with a wound or canker should be rejected.

As to Stacyduwe, it is nearly impossible to over-water something newly transplanted. I would imagine that the root ball is drying out. The surrounding soil retains water longer than the nursery soil around plant roots. It is critical. that the roots do not dry out during the establishment period. The best thing is to put your fingers in the soil of the root area to see if it moist or not.

On the flip side... if your ground is just solid hard clay.. and you haven't gotten a lot of summer rain recently.... the planting hole that you dug could become a hard sink that holds any water your put down. This is especially true if you didn't break up the bottom of the hole a bit.. and ruff up the sides.

I made the mistake years ago when we first moved in while planting a line of cherry trees alone the street line. One started looking just like yours did after planting. After a while of trying to keep it going and watering it more and more (thinking it didn't have enough water).... it died completely. I pulled it up and the bottom of the planting hole was holding a few inches of standing water.

I remedied the sink issue... planted a replacement. Didn't go crazy on water.. and now they are all doing well.

its sept.. its fall.. and it a deciduous tree ... and for most of us.. its been an extra ordinary year .. one way or another ...

i am not impressed with leaf problems.. on a tree that the leaves will fall off in the next 4 to 6 weeks ..

check water... otherwise ignore
