And I planted some foxglove a couple of weeks ago & last year I planted hollyhock just before cold weather. My foxglove seem to be loving the cooler temps. and last year the hollyhock withstood several freezes & frosts even though they lost a few leaves. They popped right back with new leaves and bloomed very well this summer. It would be chancy either way. You really never know. You might want to put some fence wire around the holloyhocks if your squirrels like them...at least until they are going good.

gibby, spindly sounds like not enough hours or intensity of light. Is this outdoor light/sun and not inside light through a window? If you fertilize and its light they need, they'll become even more spindly. Why don't you try increasing (over a period of days) how much sun they are getting, don't let them dry out but don't overwater either. Foxglove are normally rather sturdy little things to begin with when sown outdoors, combination of natural light, wind and they shouldn't be fragile or spindly.

Foxgloves, poppies, larkspar, batchalor buttons,sweet william, hollyhocks, old timey vining petunias,are all very easy to grow. The key is to treat them as annuals even though in some areas of the country some are perenial or bi annual. All will readily reseed but not in a mulched bed with any success. They all like well tilled soil and well drained soil. The time to plant is late fall early winter Nov-Dec can go as late as early Jan. Mix seed with dry sand ( 1 tsp of seed to 1/2 cup sand) use an empty pepper or other spice container and shake the seed sparesly over the top of the well tilled area( these seed are small and usually require some thinning in the spring a teaspoon of seed will cover a 4x10 area and still require some thinning) except hollyhock which can be hand spread due to larger seed ( do not rake in or cover seed). The seed need cool temps to germinate and hard freezes do not kill them. When the days warm the plants take off and come late April thru May they bloom. Allow some to set seed and when the seed is dry remove and store for replant in the fall. Add some organic matter plant summer annuals and in the fall retill the area and resow your seed. They will reseed some better than others but will eventually die out if ground is not tilled under each year to soften the soil.

I live in a colder zone than you, but this is the time that my foxgloves are self-seeding in the garden. They will sprout both now and in the spring for me. It's up in the 90's and uncomfortably near 100% humidity, so I can't imagine that your growing conditions could be much worse. Just keep them watered and shaded and they should do well. They need light to germinate, so sprinkle them on a leveled soil surface and water them, but don't cover them up. The most common type is biennial which means one year it grows just a low rosette of leaves, the second year it flowers and usually dies. So you do want to let some of them go to seed so you will have more. Delphiniums are one of a handful of plants I have intentionally grown from seed, and if I remember, I did it in pots in the spring and then planted them out. I was successful though I hadn't grown perennials from seed prior to that. However, I currently have Delphiniums that are self-seeded in my garden. They bloomed last year and then sprouted last fall a bit and mostly this spring, but I don't know whether spring is the best time for them. Here are some directions for starting them from seed. They suggest 65-75F during the day, but once they have germinated, they should be fine as long as they aren't allowed to dry out, one of the more difficult things to deal with for young plants (but they also don't want to stay soggy!) IME seed germination often has a lower range of acceptable temperatures than actually growing the plant.
