Shade them if you can and keep the soil moist at the very least. I keep planting even in the middle of summer and use spruce bows to shade my plants if I need to. Also, I consider planting in the evening better on such days.

For me, yes it is too hot, or at least I can do a little and monitor them. I like to plant out on cool rainy days with an overcast sky.

I have the same problem - just when I am ready to plant out a few late seedlings... we have temps in the 80s.. Two years ago I went to the Dollar store and bought a bunch of pretty little baskets (in pink and purple) with holes on the side.

I plant my seedlings, water them and then cover them with the baskets - It also helps with birds, squirrels, etc. I uncover in the morning, recover when it is hot - (if you work, leave them covered, they get plenty of air and some light under the baskets)...

If it's hot and the seedlings are ready to plant out I just plant out in the morning or evening and water in well. Planting out is tough love time around here.

I'd love to do what Bakemom does and plant out before rain, but Ohio rains have a really rude way of breaking up when they hit our county and then reforming once they've passed. Then they all go up to Bakemom's house and water her flowers. Meanwhile I spend half my life toting around a watering can! :)

I guess I should point out that the seedlings are all getting planted out in hunks without having their root balls disturbed. If I was separating them into individual seedlings they'd have a much harder time of it. In a hunk it's not all that different than their cozy little WS container as long as the surrounding soil doesn't leach all of the moisture out of their soil ball.

I'm with Lynda. Plant out whole containers. Divide on a rainy day if you want to make HOS.

Keep them watered. Keep them watered. Those little babies don't like the heat and will dry out in no time.

It's been in the mid 80s for the past couple of days. I planted out just a couple of jugs yesterday. It's supposed to be hot for several more days so when I go to work Monday they'd be on their own. I might wait until more normal temps return.

We have been in the heat for a few weeks know. I water as soon as the sun is off them in the evening and again in the morning until they really take off and I know the roots have gone deep.

I've been waiting since Feb to plant these guys out so I can wait a few more days. I'm waiting til the temps go down to 78, in the next day, and plant out. I also like a cloudy day, but is not always possible. If it is very hot and sunny, I cover with a chair or some such, to provide shade.

I'm going to do some planting out tomorrow, since the day after that it will start raining for several days. Yeah!

Folks: get this. Been near 90 here for three days. Went out at 6:30 this morning and soaked everybody. Ran a few errands, came back at 2:00. The toms and peppers were wilting! Did a code blue with the hose and am crossing fingers that I saved some of the babies.

This heat is too many things.
