Young Lycidas
Comments (17)Hi Maria, Thank you. I like the show that the Jasmine puts on annually, and am possibly going to add Arabian Jasmine near my RdV in the front yard. All of my own root roses, with the exception of two (purchased as one gallon plants), were planted in September when it began cooling off during the night. YL is a bare root rose on Dr. Huey, planted during the winter. The pot and roses in this side yard section; most of which are Austin's, all receive about two hours of early morning sun, and then thanks to the balcony and house, they are shaded or in open shade, then they receive about two to 2/12 hours of early afternoon sun. They are in total shade during the hottest part of the day. At my last home, I grew a floribunda in a pot where it remained for 5 years and thrived. It only received about 4-4.5 hours of sun. I have only grown one rose in a pot long term and tried to replicate the conditions. The Young Lycidas was potted in late January. Jaspermplants, I am purchasing a Bougainvillea today, for a pot I purchased yesterday:). I've read that they like cramped roots and do well in pots. I would not place roses in pots here either, except for the area in question. There's a large tree slightly in front but to the North of the area, plus a patio/ balcony and house to the east of it. Comments (24)I bought 3 YL bare root from DA spring 2012. The good-large fragrant blooms; lasted well when cut (about as long as Golden celebration for me, which is not as good as William Shakespeare 2000, but not as bad as something like Jude the Obscure. Incidentally, i think GC would be a great companion to YL.) The bad-big spring flush, but no real repeat bloom (like my experience with young Gertrude Jekyll) and despite being in good sun(west exposure) with good air circulation the foliage didn't look healthy and had problems with powdery mildew and black spot (I don't spray and we have a lot of disease pressures here.) I'm giving it another two years hoping things will improve because I was impressed by the size of those first blooms and I can still picture the bouquet I cut from that first big flush... Also agree on receiving roses from DA with RMV-so frustrating-bought another trio of gertrude jekyll-now that is the best fragrance!-and planted together. All flushed nicely-then one shows a terrible case of thick yellow RMV striping on the leaves. Tossed it, but have to assume the other two are infected as well and will show those tell tale markings in future seasons......See MoreBelinda's Dream Young Lycidas Lady of Megginch
Comments (27)Lynn, I was thinking about you today as I looked at Belinda. Last year I bought her as a 5g after seeing how bullet proof and covered in blooms in others posts. I was really wondering about what I did wrong when I brought her home because she seemed to do little more than thin growth and flopping giant buds and not in a shade I really really liked. But this year she looks much better. Those thin canes are thicker and she holds up her blooms better, But for me the best part is how much Mom loves her. I put her in a prime spot that she walks by a million times a day going back and forth to the garden and chickens. Mom comments that she likes all the roses, but Belinda is her favorite and she loves showing her off. I see what I wish was different, but mom sees her beauty. I checked out the structure of Lady of M today, seems she had thrown a similar cane that was cut shorter probably when she was packaged as a bareroot so I am thinking I can expect more mega canes....See MoreYoung Lycidas versus Lady of Megginch
Comments (14)Well, I'm a year and a half late to this conversation, but I'm curious what you ended up choosing. It sounds like you are a lover and seeker of the same brilliant rose color I am. Out of roses I've personally grown, Big Purple is my favorite, and I've had great luck with it. It seems to get better every year. Photos never seem to do it justice! David Austin's William Shakespeare 2000 is probably in a tie with it: I don't think anyone else mentioned it here and I am surprised. It is a stunner. My DA Lycidas has not been all that thrilling in color or in bloom shape and size. DA The Dark Lady is a magnificent magenta, but the one I have has become ridden with fungus. It may be its location, so I will be moving it soon to see if it can be cured. Munstead Wood (when I've seen it at nurseries) always looks more black-red and depressing to me, even though when I see it online the pictures look quite magenta. The two plants I have been most coveting are Blackberry Nip and David Austin's Indigo. I am desperate for them! I can't manage to procure Blackberry Nip as I can only find it available in Australia (they won't ship to U.S.). DA Indigo I am hoping to find available in the spring--as of now, I am not finding it available....See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
