About Young Lycidas
Comments (12)I am extremely happy with mine. It has been busy forming buds now. Mine is very large, in his 3rd year, much bigger than Teasing Georgia! I pruned him hard last spring, but only a moderate clearing here and there this January. So YL is rather husky! I think I'll follow everyone's example too, and feed him come this weekend....See MoreYoung Lycidas update
Comments (21)I don't understand why Young Lycidas would scare you, Ingrid. Mine is extremely healthy, and I have never sprayed it. It is a profuse bloomer with beautiful individual flowers that are old-fashioned and very fragrant. It does have some canes that flop under the weight of the big, heavy flowers, but that is becoming less and less of a problem as the plant matures and develops more and more substantial canes. I just cut the weak canes short after they have bloomed. I have a number of favorites in my garden, including Olivia Rose Austin, Tamora and Boscobel, but I would say that Young Lycidas ranks up there near the top of my list (my Olivia Rose Austin is so beautiful at this time that I am unable to consider any other rose to be my favorite)....See MoreYoung Lycidas ???
Comments (2)Lynn, my YL has 8 - 10 feet tall canes that arch over. It's free-standing, and about 5 feet wide. For the first 4 years, it was a sprawling, messy plant and the pencil-thin canes couldn't support the blooms. The canes are still thin but now grow upright until they arch over, particularly with the weight of the big blooms. I think this rose would be great tied to a pillar or obelisk. Mine is a grafted plant starting it's 6th year. I have never pruned it. Jo...See MoreSophy's Rose/Princess Anne/Young Lycidas/Heathcliff
Comments (13)Here are YL and Sophy together. YL typically has larger blooms than Sophy but it rained hard all weekend and the best of YL's blooms are too battered for photos. I ADORE Young Lycidas. Heavenly fragrance, wonderful color with subtle veining, heavy bloomer with quick repeat and very hardy. I don't mind the nodding form. It may help that I have three together in a grouping, and they look like one large fountain shaped shrub. One negative is blackspot susceptibility. Sophy is a fine and reliable rose. Cheerful. I can't believe DA has moved her to the supplementary list. Not fair. I'm not surprised that Heathcliff has been banished to that same list though, IMO he belongs there. Sophy grows upright, covered in good foliage (no bare knees), remains short and tidy, Always in bloom, and lots of bloom. At their best the blooms have an almost dahlia like form. In extreme heat the petals do wilt and fade. I detect no fragrance. She's very hardy and has good blackspot resistance for me. I tried Heathcliff for 2 years. My chief gripe was the shrub form, grows like a hybrid tea. Didn't mix in well with other english roses. The blooms were huge and lush and I loved the color. I'd say it was somewhere between YL and Darcey Bussell. I had such high hopes when I saw the first blooms and was ready to forgive his awkward lankiness, but my hopes were dashed, he just refused to give me many more blooms. Princess Anne is an interesting english rose. It has a cluster blooming habit that reminds me of a floribunda. I liked it well enough but that particular look didn't work with my design. Marolena's photos capture the color well, a deep, dusty rose. It was blackspot resistant and vigorous. can't comment on hardiness....See MoreRelated Professionals
