Rusty blackhaw viburnum showing signs of stress

I have a rusty blackhaw viburnum in a pot that has been recently showing signs of stress. Several of the leaves have developed brown spots within the last week.

I am in Dallas, TX, and we have had record heat this summer. I have been watering the plant every other day with the garden hose, soaking it for no more than 30 seconds. The plant gets partial sun, with perhaps 1.5 to 2 hours of direct sunlight in the early afternoon.

I have owned the plant for 1.5 years, and it has been in the same container for that entire duration. Aside from a little bit of Miracle Gro when I first got the plant, it has received nothing but water.

The tree is 37" tall, the inside diameter of the container is 14" and the spread of the tree is 29".

First thought without looking at pix...needs fert.

Looking at pix...needs fert and more room. Plants in pots need regular fert.

come on.. lets all understand that summer is over.. and sept is a week away ..

frankly.. your plant looks spectacular ... after a long hot hard summer .... ignore it ... do not try to kill it with too much love ...

in my z5.. fall is not time to fertilize pots.. i dont know what to tell you about your zone ...

why is it not in the ground ...

G - Gnats do not chew leaves. Thrips do. Cats do too. Caterpillars do, miice do chew. You need to leach your pots - just run plain lukewarm water in a sink through the pots until the water runs clear. Blot the leaves with a paper towel and let them dry before exposing them to the light. Watering from the top or watering from the bottom... no matter what you need to wash and leach them every so often., They like the shower - don't you too? Removes the dust and gives them a fresh feeling ;-)). Your plain African violet mix - did you mix it yourself or bought it? if you bought it - it is preloaded with fert. And it needs perlite to be added. Anyway - you do not have virus - and the plant will grow out of this burn no problem. Your plant looks quite healthy - it is just to young to consume all the goodies. Altrernate your fertilizer with plain water for now. Good Luck Irina

sall20, Thanks for the photos. Appreciate seeing the branch angles before leaf-out. Most photos seem to show them either in flower or in fall color when the structure is obscured. A very nice RBV! Have been planning to eventually limb ours up in the 4 to 6ft range. Think you're probably right that the 4ft spacing may not be enough for the limbs to clear a 6 ft fence if they're left on below 5ft or so. Will see if there is any more space left once we move the existing stuff around a bit; limbing up to at least 5 ft should be okay for us, but would be nice to have the flexibility to decide this later. Worst case... suppose we can always cut notches in the fence as our neighbors have done for their photinia branches. :-)

Found this online . . . Rust If the spots on your viburnum leaves are more rust-colored than brown, the plants may have a rust infection. This is also caused by various fungi. Viburnum leaves infected by rust will wither and die. This is a contagious disease, so you’ll want to destroy diseased plants in the spring before new growth starts. Thanks for the replies!

It has gotten much worse since I posted last week. All of the leaves are dry and crispy. Is it too late to try to do something?

It is still in the 100s here, but looks like a cooling trend will be starting this weekend (lower 90s woohoo!). Would it be a good idea or bad idea to fertilize now?

I dont have a suitable place to plant it in the ground right now. I'm currently in a townhouse, and I only have a couple of narrow flowerbeds in the back for planting space. My thought was that I would buy a house in the next two years and raise the tree in a container until then.
