Events in Sacramento Historic Rose Garden

Hi -

On this Saturday, Nov 15, I'll be leading a tour about "Fall Color in the Rose Garden." Because we've had such a mild fall, there is still a lot of bloom, but there are also colorful hips to talk about and foliage starting to turn. Tour starts at 10 am, meeting inside the main gate at Broadway and 10th St. The weather promises to be glorious.

We also will do two pruning clinics. Barbara Oliva will give a class on pruning heritage roses on Dec 6 at 10 am. I will talk about climbing roses on Dec 27, also at 10 am. We will, of course, answer any questions about any types of roses that we can in both classes.

If any of you are in the area, you are welcome to join in. We are just about ready to start pruning, and anybody is welcome to come work with us on any Wed or Sat at 10 am. If you don't feel confident about your pruning skills, have no fear, we'll work with you.

Anita, I thought there would still be alot of blooms in the cemetery. I wish we could make it up there. Last fall was so lovely.

I wish I could make at least one of the events. I am up in the Sac area sporadically. Thanks for keeping us updated!

Aprons - denim shirts - tshirts - there are other ways to spend your money at Open Garden! We have some heirloom iris too. Of course, we would not turn down a donation either. We are doing some big-ticket items this year after building up a fund - new markers for the plots, a new Historic Rose Garden sign, a new structure - we are making some wonderful improvements. Very exciting. Rather expensive (and totally out of our non-profit funds)! Whether or not you can support us financially or with your time, we'd love to have you come and enjoy the roses. Anita

Hey Anita: Thanks for posting that. I had it marked on my calendar already:) Last year my MIL and husband went down for me and had great fun. That was when I got Lupe's Buttons which was such a find. I'm really excited for this event. Now about that catalog can a person got one in advance? Or just on the 18th? Thanks again for all that is done to make the Open Garden sale happen. Kate

Hi, Paul - there will be more events at the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden at the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, 1000 Broadway - but at present, here are two for your calendar - thanks so much! Anita Nov 20, 10 am, Fall Color in the Rose Garden tour. Free, but donations accepted. Apr 16, 2011, 930 am - 2 pm, Open Garden. Tours in the rose garden, sale of roses and rose-related items, and a chance to visit the historic roses, perennial plants, and California natives near or at the peak of their bloom.

I'll be coming to the Dec. 5 pruning clinic for sure. I've developed a new problem in regard to The Sun and Me, also having a lot of other allergy/smog difficulties, so I'm playing it by ear as to coming to volunteer - but I should be there in a week or two. Will you all be working on the day before Thanksgiving? I might make it then, but didn't know if everyone would be home baking pies, etc.

Yes, we'll be in the cemetery the Wed before Thanksgiving, and the Sat after. We can bake pies AND work in the rose garden!
