In my zone 9 CA garden BB is definitely NOT a once bloomer (still putting out a few clusters of flowers right now), and it does not get BS, but we are much drier than you are in Florida, so you should get that info from someone nearer by.

I have had one plant of BB in my garden for about 15 years. Here I have let it be a climber, and it has grown up about 4 feet, and then over an arch about another 5 feet, and then up our house maybe 7-8 feet more. It blooms a lot in the Spring, and then keeps blooming all Summer and into the Winter in periodic flushes, but with much fewer blooms than in the Spring. Have you checked her out on "help me find (roses)"?

lovely rose but very changeable according to local conditions. I would guess Sherry ought to weigh in here (does she grow this?). I will say that here in the UK, it is one of the bigger HMs with a consistent blooming pattern - a good spring flush, scattered blooms then a great autumn flush then more scattered blooms till savage frosts (like now).

I have Buff Beauty, here in Atlanta. I have mine planted next to an old 4X4 that I painted white, drilled holes and made kind of cross pieces to help hold BB in place.

I find that the canes are stiff and not very flexible--even when young and it's not a good pillar roses like I was hoping. It sends out some canes in all directions and some of them grow really low to the ground. I liked the way Olga in MD prunes it to make it a free standing shrub.

I DO like the rose, though. I get a very nice spring flush, some blooms throughout the summer--not a ton but enough to keep it interesting and a beautiful fall flush. There are still some blooms on it now.

It does get some black spot in my garden but it's not all that bad. I like the fragrance. The color is very chanageable.

I don't think I've ever cut a bloom to bring into the house. I think it's because there are usually some more buds coming out and I don't want to sacrifice them by cutting that stem.

Is it my favorite rose? No, but I do like it enough to keep it in an ultra-prime location in my front yard.

Sally, I don't grow Buff Beauty, never tried it. The only HM I have left is Cornelia. Five others are gone (Bubble Bath, Penelope, Felicia & Francesca). They didn't like my ground or perhaps they don't like Florida. Sandy couldn't get them to work when she was in Ocala, and BB bombed for my friend, Judy, here in Ocala. If real estate is precious for you, you might try something other than a hybrid musk. Just a thought. Oh, if you like orange (I seem to remember that you do), have you tried the noisette, Crepuscule? Three of us in Ocala are growing it. No rave reviews yet. Hopefully, it's just a slow starter.

mmm yes, crepuscule is an inspired choice, same graceful habits and lovely apricot/peachy shades.

BB is a nice rose, but in warm climate I would rather get Crepuscule or Lady Hillingdon instead, I think both of them would bloom more. Or Perle d'Or for that matter.

I was interested in Buff Beauty because K & M Roses lists it grafted on Fort., and I have gotten several orders from them and thinking of ordering more... starting with another 'Julia Child',.... but I'm looking for some tall roses for the back of the beds and BB seemed to fit the bill... and she is the right color, cream- yellow- orangey..... I do have Crepuscule a year now, and it seems to have very small, dime-size blooms, very sparse blooms, not at all like the pics or write-ups... but a nice color...... I'm going to think abt. it, what with all the info you folks have sent.. but I do want to get 'it' on Fort., too bad there are not more Nurseries growing the OGR's on Fort. it would make it so much easier. I have tried numerous times to root several of my own-root roses, and never any luck.... if I could do that, then learn how to graft onto Fort., it wouldn't be so bad....then I'd get more own-root and graft them.... I love Bermuda Kathleen also Old Blush and both are own-root, they are bloom-machines, OB is in a pot... I'm trying to get away from spraying, and the OGR's do well w/o spray... but the HTs defoliate from BS and if not for companion-plants in front of them they would be an eyesore....but this is familiar to you-all. If you're not familiar with Lady Hillngdon, here's what it looks like near Washington, DC. Since it's a tea rose, I daresay it ought to be at least that impressive for you if it's happy in your garden.

Thanks york rose, Lady Hillingdon is gorgeous, now if I could just find her grafted on Fort. !! By the way, some of the moderns do seem to resist BS... I'm thinking Belinda's Dream, Summer Snow, China Doll, and now Julia Child.. China Doll upright is no longer offered by Nurseries ( grafted on Fort.) all I can find are the Weeping CD... and it's not near as nice as the old upright CD.... also Summer Snow is hard to find grafted on Fort. I had gotten these years ago from Nelson's in Apopka, and they have gotten big, and just never stop blooming..... Don Juan is another great rose and I have Summer Snow in front of it ( I have 7 of him ) so the SS hides his bare-knees in the summer.... of course, they all do much better when sprayed regularly in the summer.... also Carefree Beauty, I forgot to mention..... but they are all on Fort. and are old now, but they keep plugging away.... sally

I had BB in my New Smyrna garden. I loved it, but I grew it against a wall. It is slow to get established so you need to be patient. Mine was grafted on Fortuniana.

I also can highly recommend Belinda's Dream as a rose everyone in Florida should have in their garden. Too beautiful and easy to care for.

Sally, I'm trying Buff Beauty, but it's only been in the ground a month. It's own-root.

I have Crepuscule, and it's been slow to build, but the blooms are a nice size, guessing maybe 2.5 inches. I'm surprised yours are only dime-sized. It's very healthy and blooms in flushes all year.

I have a Buff Beauty on own root. I have only had it since last spring and it has grown quite a bit in it's first year. Not alot of blooms so far though, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I also have a Crepuscule and it has grown like crazy this year. I got that one also as a small gallon size plant last spring and it has really taken off. I hope it doesn't get too much bigger or I will have to do some moving of other roses to accomodate this one.

Claferg, thanks for posting the pic, it's always good to see how other roses are doing, yours looks very healthy and nice size, my Crepuscule is own-root from Rose Petals Nursery and I got her in March and maybe I am expecting too much too soon..... I wish more Nurseries had OGRs on Fort.... K&M Nursery in Miss. has Fort. grafted, but mostly moderns, that's why I am anxious to get BB from them.... I'm also going to order another Julia Child, it is excellent and very BS resistant.... Thanks for all the input, it's hard to find 'rosies' in Fla. to exchange information with.... I belong to the Central Fla. Heritage Rose Society, in Lakeland, at Fla. Southern College.... Dr. Malcolm Manners is past-president and has extensive rose-gardens there, mostly OGRs, grafted on Fort., grafted at the College by Horticulture students....I live in St Pete so it's a 1 hour drive on I-4 but it's worth it, so much information at the Meetings also a great bunch of folks.... if you are in central Fla. you might want to consider joining.....thanks.. sally

Saldut, I also got my Crepuscule from Rose Petals Nursery about the same time. I also have a Julia Child rose that I love but mine does seem to get BS for me, but it isn't grafted on Fort, I wonder if that has some bearing? I would love to be able to belong to a rose society but I am in the Daytona area and my vehicle is not that trustworthy right now, but perhaps in the future, I would really love to attend.
One thing, I didn't plant my Crepuscle right away when I received it. It just stayed in the pot it arrived in until I was able to prepare a spot for it which involved removing a tree, so it probably was a few months before I actually planted it, but when I did put it in the ground it really took off.
