Wonderful Swap - Jan, Thanks for Having Us!

Jan, thanks for inviting us and for hosting the swap. It was a huge success and I had a wonderful time seeing old friends and making a few new ones. THANKS, you ROCK!

It was a great turnout. I counted 25 at lunch and several could not join us. This is becoming quite the gardeners' event. Well, off the yard to plants. Thanks everyone for your trades. I'll see you in the spring.

Thank you Jan for having all of us and to everyone else... thank you so very much for making my Great Aunt so welcome! She had a wonderful time... talked all the way to Trussville about how nice everyone was and how sweet everyone was.

She is already planning on what to root and bring to the swap in the spring. It's been an awesome day and I am grateful to you all. Have a wonderful Fall and winter and I look forward to the Spring.

And that was the best shrimp i've ever had myself at lunch.

countrygirl - without me there who would eat all that food! Thanks everyone for coming. Thanks everyone for giving me credit. The truth is that way back in 2000 when I first moved here I stumbled upon GardenWeb and found a post in another forum about hosting a plant swap and loved the simplicity of its "structure". So none of this is really my idea - somebody else came up with the style of it and I just copied it. And I'm sooooo glad I did. The dates and times are at the whim of the Garner Parks Dept. There is a limit as to how far in advance you can reserve a shelter so when it gets close to mid February I will start checking their calendar and find a Saturday with the Pine Shelter available in the afternoon, sometime in late April or early May. I also pay attention to what kind of winter we are having and whether early or late would be best. So far we have lucked out and never really bad weather - most often we've had nice afternoons to do this.

Thank you, Jim ... for hosting us, providing compost, pots, & showing us an easy way to root cuttings. I'm glad I had the seeds you wanted & look forward to a seedling in June. Thanks to those who came with an assortment of cuttings especially the evergreens! It was well worth the time to attend once again even if I didn't plant a single seed. Those cuttings commanded my full attention. Great tip from Jim to put on the north side of the house to give more rooting time in late spring. This Green Elephant group is the best thing that happened to our gardens! Corrine (& James)

What a gorgeous day for a swap!! You certainly must have done quite the dance to the garden fairies for such a beautiful day! It was great to see everyone. Annie you are such an incredible hostess... definitely 'The Hostess with the Mostess!". Your Onion Soup is to die for, and the salad, the wine, all the goodies were superb! If anyone is wondering about the names of the plants that I brought (yes, I forgot to make tags... my bad... sorry) they are: Cryptotaenia japonica var. purpurea (purple Japanese parsley) Caryopteris divaricata (nepalensis) ... smelly foliage, but gorgeous blue butterfly type flowers Daphne mezureum (February Daphne...although it blooms in March/April here) Thanks again! Howdy all! It's granny Barb here, oldest of the TD coots. Why do I have to log on as a member here now? Even wickedcoolstuff.com remembers me from my email address. I've been visiting with you all by email cuz I thought you were all chatting away there to bypass GW new confused state. Gee I sure missed a lot! BTW I'm fine. I've dealt with paraplegia for 55 years and even a nasty surgery won't stop me, tho I may be off my feed and so on for awhile. Life goes on, and I enjoy most of it, you all especially, most of the time. I hope I can stay and watch the fun, even if I can't do up boxes while I recover. Very comforting to have friends around while healing. And they may not want to operate after all. In which case, I'll be permanently slowed down. If so, you are still a lovely bunch of gardener types to hang out with. I'll keep you posted. The deciding appt. with surgeon #2 is Feb. 3. Wow, I'm so behind! Greenhouses and businesses, kids and grandkids with good news and not so good, daylilies and orchids, kitchens and chocolate! I'm paying attention here. The brugs are growing in their pots, out of the cellar, but I did lose my favorite, Yellow Wedding Bells. The 2 cuttings I kept just screamed, rotted and passed away. I never plan to collect them, tho; all I want is a modest brug forest beside the knifophias. Doesn't matter if half of them are the same. That's the joy of lotsa land. I'll never fill it all up! Our old friend of 30 years M was here for the weekend. He's recovering from open heart surgery last Aug. and the change in him is phenomenal! He's lost 50 lbs., he's happy and agile, all rosy and the twinkle is back in his eye! He about drove us mad picking arguments over politics before. Now he tells silly jokes again! Wore me out, tho. Deni I looked up your illness. It's like my everlasting nerve pain, but with some added bonuses just to keep you guessing. You get a lot done despite. Terrific. What is going on in everybody's ponds? Are the fish ok with all this nutty weather? I think we should all post our animal pictures nefore Jan is over, as part of the Jan swap theme. Any hints on keeping raccoons out of suet feeders? It is already hoisted quite a ways up a tree. They climb, then hang on the feeder and pull everything down with them. And during this animally time, I just have to say it out loud, corner nothwithstanding: I REALLY LIKE FROGS A LOT! TOADS TOO! I do. DD Sara had an enormous toad she called Frank she used to kiss on the lips. We told her not to, but you all have kids and know how much they listen sometimes. Ol' Frank got so used to it he'd just hang there, with his legs dangling; he was about 7" long from lips to toes. Wish I'd taken a picture! Next time I'll be all caught up and post something more germane... hugs all around Barb

Thanks again Jan, your garden is truly amazing! I just love your mom, she is the most beautiful flower in your garden... This was my first swap, I had a great time and met the nicest people ever. After setting out my plants this afternoon, it was not hard to come up with my screen name because now --- my bend over is tore up... I look forward to many more swaps and now I know what to expect...Also, a special thanks to littlehelper and her Classy Great Aunt... daffodillady and her friend...the jelly,pear,and pepper lady that I want to call Margaritta for some reason...Ya'll were awesome. Jan: Thanks for the hospitality shown when I visited your fabulous garden Saturday. It was nice to meet you and the other gardeners from Alabama and surrounding areas. Reading a post on the Alabama Gardening Forum means more as I can now put a face with many of the screen names. All of the swaps are greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for hosting the swap and making everyone feel right at home. I had a great time and can not wait till the spring. I spent most of today arranging and planting all the goodies I got. Thanks to all those who I traded with and all the extras. I fell blessed to have friends like you.

It was a joy to see old friends and a pleasure to meet new ones. Enjoyed going around to Cracked Pots as well. Days like that are a jewel in my memory. Jan, your place was treat to visit...how exciting to see the plants, ponds and puppies. The catfish was very good. Never enough time at these swaps to visit with everybody is my only complaint- LOL!!

Daffodillady (BETH) has made a good point about time to visit. Maybe we should consider starting later, eating lunch first and then swapping plants. We can visit at lunch, visit more at the swap and after the swap we won't be so hungry we rush off for lunch. Just something to think about.

Add my dittos, too. It was great, Jan. I'd hate to have to get ready for 30 people to come to my yard! Yours is wonderful. Tell your brother thanks, too. We enjoyed visiting the Cracked Pot, too.

I'm looking forward to seeing irisaddict/Evelyn again at the Middle TN swap in a couple of weeks. I'll report back about that when I get home.

I'm a tad late getting my comments up, but sure enjoyed seeing Jan's gardens as well as everyone at the swap. Having now been to 2 swaps, I feel like an old-timer in the group -- good friends, good conversations, and great swaps. OH - and a great lunch,my hubby Clark enjoyed the catfish and meeting everyone. Thanks to all who gave their "extras" too. Now would like it to dry out just a little bit so I can get out to plant! See everyone in the Spring, have a good safe blessed remainder of 2009.
