Is Full Sail thornless?
Comments (2)Thanks John, That can be a hassard. I want to add more thornless and nearly thornless roses to my collection just for that reason. So I'm seriously thinking of adding Full Sail to my wish list for this spring. Paul...See MoreFull Sail
Comments (17)Want some convincing? How about this: Full Sail wilts in heat - any heat. It wilts in Humidity. It wilts in the rain. It says to Black Spot - nay, CALLS to Black Spot, "Here I am!" For thrips, it's "Dinner time!" Anthracnose spots ruin the bloom's appeal. (Less so on apricot-colored roses, hence the appeal..... but that's another discussion.) Fragrance is... meh! Want more convincing? How about these. After about 2 hour of looking good in classic hybrid tea bud form, the bloom loses it's appeal as it opens further. If fact, it looks downright ugly even before the petals spread out. It's not a good cut flower, no matter what the "fact sheet" on it says. It wilts in a vase in less than a day. There's more, of course, but I don't want to beat you over the head too much....See MoreI think I should give up on Full Sail
Comments (5)I grow Full Sail too. It did the same thing the first year. However, it has been absolutely amazing this year. It was absolutely load with blooms - even after heavy disbudding. The flowers all managed to open fully but that may have been attributed to a nice spell of sunny weather. A lovely bonus is the leaves, which are beautiful and glossy even well into fall. The only minor fault I can say is that the flowers tend to hang on to their petals even after their prime. It may not necessarily be a bad thing though as it tended to give the appearance of a long flush (about five weeks for me)....See MoreWhite Rose I.D.? 'White Lightnin''?
Comments (28)@damask_rose_zone9b JFK was a seedling the breeder, Gene Boerner, who had bred roses for Jackson and Perkins for decades, reserved to name for himself. That should give you an idea of what its creator thought of it. When Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the J&P board over rode Boerner and named the rose for the fallen President. Three years later, in 1966, when Boerner passed, the board named one of his unreleased seedlings for him. It was a very vigorous pink floribunda, which was totally fitting as Boerner created and named the class. Gene Boerner is still found in body bag selections and has proven itself over the decades to actually be one of his best creations. This, and many other marvelous stories can be found in his biography, "Papa Floribunda: The Gene Boerner Story"....See Morepembroke
