Yes Kevin, you are right! I will have to remember to do the same next spring, I love fresh peas. I picked a mess of peas and had them for supper last night, they are sooooo good!

I suppose it's worth a shot, but it's most likely too late there. I used to plant a fall crop of sugar snaps and snow peas in the fall, but learned not to expect much from it. The years when the first hard freeze arrived before early Nov it was tough on them. The first freeze usually damages the newest growth and though it doesn;t kill the entire plant, flowering and fruiting really slows down. I've had years where the first few peas start coming in, and then a freeze hits. I just grow them in the spring. Pea seedlings can take some very cold temps. Cold soil temps can be a problem in spring, so I pre-germinate them inside before sowing in late Feb/March. Dave

I would plant them anytime now. They do best germinating in warmish soil and growing in cool conditions. Spacing isn't too important, I generally sow seed about 1" apart and forget to thin. A friend spaces them 6-8" apart. The closer the spacing the sturdier the trellis/support system needs to be. I used 4' t-posts and twine run from one to the next. They grew over the top twine and stretched it such that they were able to flop over. My buddy did the same thing, but used chicken wire fencing and it held up fine.

I have also been contemplating my fall garden, and had the same problem spring to summer, I am going to tackel it in a couple of ways (I planted my toms and peppers when small, in amongst peas, and they are fine). at the start for fall transplanting/sowing the plants will be small, so could you plant say 4 broccoli in 1 square then transfer later? don't know, but it maybe worth a try, I am going to try this method and see how it goes, I will also sacrific the weedier specimins of spring plants to make room. because I know how mad I will be with myself, after the first frost and I have very little to continue with. Due to this, I also have now, 2 new raised beds, one is mainly summer stuff and the other fall/winter and I will reverse the beds next year...that's the plan?? and I am hopeing to be more organised next year and sow green manure on the fallow parts, so I am with anniesgranny on that one. I have also learnt an important lesson! how are me and 1 small son going to eat our way through 10 tom plants, if they all produce? DH and other son can't stand the stuff.
