Weird leaves on Mr. Don Juan

Hi everyone, I have scoured the internet trying to find the cause of this problem, but haven't found a thing. I'm hoping some of you awesome gardners out there can help me out!

I'm new to roses, but I recently purchased two climbing Don Juans to grow up a post by my front door and by the garage. The rose by the garage has grown exponentially, but has yet to bloom. The rose by my front door has hardly any foliage at all, but actually has 17 blooming roses! I am very confused by this difference.

In addition to this, what little foliage this plant has is looking very strange. The older growth is deep green/purple and large, the new growth is extremely thin and long, with prickly edges. I think my poor Don Juan might not be doing so well.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Why is the other bush growing so well but with no blooms?

Ps. We live in the piedmont of NC, not sure of the zone. Both bushes get adaquate sunlight, although the bush that is blooming gets the least.

My Don had similar leaf growth. I supposed it to be RMV and sped several years ago. I hope to try again with a non-virused own root from Heirloom.

Don Juan will lose every last leaf if not sprayed, here in Florida. Perhaps regular fungicide would help with defoliation?

The growth you are describing sounds spot on for herbicide damage, and it's possible your grass clippings had trace herbicide on them, but the most likely culprit to be found on grass clippings is "2,4-D" a broad leaf weed killer approved for use on home lawns and is sold at your local hardware stores, no doubt ("weed-b-gone" is one of them). The other parts of your mix could also have been the culprits. Manure can sometimes be contaminated with Clopyralid as jean said above. Clopyralid is a much more toxic and persistent herbicide than 2,4-D. Clopyralid also requires a license to purchase / apply, partly in response to the persistance and potential damage it can cause. If Clopyralid is in your mix, it's going to have problems for a year or more. Let's hope for your sake that, if it is herbicide damage, that it's 2,4-D and not Clopyralid, because the breakdown of 2,4-D is significantly shorter in duration (anywhere from a few weeks to a few months). Depending on the level of exposure, if it was 2,4-D, the plants might even be able to recover as-is.

I'm going to repeat my post from two years ago, because nothing has changed, and my solution is still working. If you find spots only on the front of your solid-color t-shirts after washing them, this will take care of them. It's a pain, but pre-treating them faithfully with Stain Stick--I now have to order it from Amazon, as WalMart and Kroger stores have quit carrying it--but it relieves the frustration of finding spots on freshly washed clothes. Spots only occur on the fronts of our t-shirts, never the backs or sides, so I think it has to do with getting grease on the front either from cooking or eating. Have you ever seen the spot a tiny crumb of potato or corn chip leaves on a brown paper sack overnight? My solution: pre-treat all visible spots with Stain Stick. Works most of the time, and seems to always work the second time around if there is a spot or two after the first wash. It's a pain, but compared to the trouble of making my own detergent, I'll continue doing it. I tried using spray pre-treatments, but once you spray you can't tell what spots are from the spray and which need to be treated. I have a top-loader and use Costco Free and Clear, but have tried Tide and other detergents, as well. Makes no difference. I use a dryer and fabric softener sheets. I tried no sheets and different brands--no difference. I typically pour the detergent down into the bottom of the tub so it goes into the area below the tub with the holes it, but don't wait to put clothes in until the bottom is covered with water, so it's possible some of the unmixed detergent is getting on the clothes. But as I started off with, if the spots were being caused by the detergent, they wouldn't be just on the fronts of the shirts.

Vapor, I’m just a paranoid crazy person. I think the state of the world has my mind jumping to worst case scenarios even in my happy place in the garden. Can you tell me more about what made you think I might have them? I do see some curling of leaves but nothing else is jumping out as CT to my untrained eye.

I really don't like the sound of this.
Where are you located?
Is it possible for you to get a photo digitized?
If you can't do that, can you put some leaves and twigs in a flatbed scanner and scan them, and save as a jpg file?

If you don't have a flatbed scanner, maybe a local kinko does?

The reason I was turned on to this forum many years ago was a similar problem.

I'm not so quick to jump on the RMV band-wagon.

Here's a question for you: Have you sprayed any form of herbicide recently around the area that the roses reside? If so, you might be dealing with a very common problem with people who spray for weeds. The good news is that the plant will eventualy come around, although the affected areas will continue to display this mutated leaf growth with deformed rose buds. It often takes several weeks, if not months, for the plant to recover. I had this problem once with a Gertrude Jeckly (sp?) and it turned out to be one of my largest rose bushes ever. Most "experts" in my rose society told me to pitch it and shovel prune it, but I loved the scent so I watered generously daily and fertilized the bush with Alphalpha pellets to stimulate new basal breaks and the bush pulled through.

A picture of the affected area might help others prognose the problem better.

Just to clarify the above posts, RMV (rose mosaic virus) is not the same as (RR) Rose Rosette. I think you mean RR not RMV there Adrian (just a mistype?).

In climates with winter, it can take three years for a rose to outgrow herbicide problems.
And the poster is from the Piedmont of NC, where RRD is becoming a more serious problem every year.
Telling someone not to worry could lead to the death of additional roses. (And doing nothing can be a disaster.)

I wish we could direct her to the NC ag people, but they've misdiagnosed the problem before.
The purple green color of the leaves is NOT a glyphosate symptom, FWIW.
