Placed My Order for Spring

So, after going back and forth between several websites, including Palatine I finally placed 2 orders. One with Regan and the other with David Austin. Palatine just didn't have what I wanted at all, sold out the few that I did already.

So this is what I'm getting:

From Regan:

Neptune (really looking forward to seeing this one in person)

Papa Meilland (I had this one before and loved it)

Tropicana (Also, had this before, adore)

Valencia (This was one I wanted several years ago but didn't get).

From David Austin:

Gertrude Jeykll Climbing (Had this as a regular bush, but I need a climber and I love the fragrance. Added bonus is it will hopefully deter the squirrels from running along the fence line with all it's thorns, where it's going, and where they tend to jump up onto my detached garage roof lol).

Tradescant (everyone raves about this one and I loved the color)

Reine des Violettes (Oh, can't wait to smell this!)

French Lace (Again, an old favorite)

Ebb Tide (couldn't resist this one)

The only one I couldn't get was Barkorole. It was sold out nearly everywhere and I wasn't going to place an order for just one rose if I found it somewhere. I also took off a few that I wanted for now; Miss American Beauty and America only because I had several pinks already and I figured I would rethink this when I get everything into the ground. I don't have a lot of room and what I bought might be pushing it already. If I have space left, I'll probably go to the local nurseries and see what's available at that time. I did ok locally on a couple of things years ago (I got my Tropicana in town) so maybe I'll be lucky.

Anyway, I asked for shipment mid-March, assuming that they will get here probably the 3rd week of March and I'll have them in the ground by end March. I seem to remember that was what I did the last time. Shipping for April seemed too late.

Most of the climbers listed by David Austin are just the shrubs that tend to make long canes in the North American climate. 'Gertrude Jekyll' certainly wanted to be a climber in my climate, and it gave some repeat bloom when fanned out. You and the squirrels both will need body armor.

Nice list! I've gotten some great roses from Regan. Good sized plants and root systems for bare root plants and always well packaged for shipping.

Autumn Damask has some vicious thorns. I was disappointed with the original WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and ended up shovel pruning it. WS2000 is a better rose = better repeat, better flower form, and better growth habit. If I were you I'd cancel WS and then either wait until Chamblees offers WS2000 own root or order it grafted directly from David Austin Roses Limited. Alba Felicite Parmentier and Ispahan don't repeat bloom. Enough said. Adam has no fragrance. None-zip-zada. It is also monster big. Replace it with another apricot Tea or a Tea-Noisette. If you want big then Reve d'Or, William Allen Richardson, or Buff Beauty would be good alternatives. Why no DUCHESSE DE BRABANT? She is a must have Tea rose. And the fragrance! Oh-la-la is it strong. And where pray tell is REINE DES VIOLETTES. Have I taught you nothing? Another suggestion. I've become very fond of BELINDA'S DREAM this year. I planted her at my mom's and MIL's homes. One of the healthiest roses that I've ever seen. Very good for a beginner. Fantastic flower form and clear pink color is very pretty. Lasts a long time in a vase too. CONSTANT repeat bloom. The light fragrance is nothing to rave about but at least it is definite and detectable under most atmospheric conditions. Lastly, WHERE IS M-O-L-I-N-E-U-X?

I received a violet leaf order a few weeks ago so am waiting for the mouse ears to appear. . . most of the leaves are minis or semis which is a new adventure for me as I've mainly only grown standards previously. I also placed an order for seeds with the Gesneriad Society consisting of mostly sinningia & streptocarpus crosses. At one time I grew Jean Pierre Croteau. It was a strong growing plant but I had trouble keeping the fantasy; I expect my temps were a bit too warm for it.

Last year I waited until Palatine had their new catalog up, then I placed the order with them that same day, then I started working on the other orders. I did it that way because Palatine's roses do better for me than most other roses and I wanted to be sure I get the ones I want. I like to be done (or mostly done) by the end of January. If Roses Unlimited has a rose that you need that you are sure you can't get or don't want to get from anywhere else then go ahead and order it now. For most places it is better to wait for their new catalog to be available so you can make an informed decision about what you want to get in case there is something new that would be better than something you might otherwise order. Most places do let you add to an order without any trouble. So if you're sure you want something that may sell out, go ahead and order it after you check their order policy. I know I've added roses to orders from Ashdown and Heirloom, and I considered adding to orders from Palatine and Roses Unlimited so I'm fairly certain that all of those will do it without problems.

I second the recommendation for Northern Lights Daylilies. I received my order from him last week and they are very large (especially for a northern garden) single fans with bonus fans and a large bonus plant. I also received very nice plants this spring from a number of other sellers on the Lily Auction. Still waiting on a few more before I make a report on all of them. If you check out the seller's feedback you can see what they tend to send out. I've been very pleased thus far. Many of the sellers there sell from their own websites too.

Michael - my GJ was pretty much a climber as well. By the end of each summer it was easily 6'-7' and tipping over. I always thought it would have been great for pegging. I also got repeat blooms on it periodically after her first full flush.

And squirrels be damned, for all the damage they have caused to my porch roof! I don't mind the prickles at all for the lovely blooms and scent it throws off. Truly was my favorite in the garden by far.

I've pegged both my Austins. Golden Celebration loves it and gives me tons of blooms. Graham Thomas hasn't seemed to take to it and gave me no more bloom than it did as just a shrub.

I have both Valencia and Neptune in pots. They are both fantastic, but Neptune is a bit better and has more fragrance. You're getting some great roses!!

Thanks Carol! I spent several days going through dozens of roses, whittling down the list. Being that I don't have too much space, it was a difficult task to say the least. If I'm lucky, after I plant those up I'll find room for a few more and will be able to get the 3 or 4 that I had to "give up". I think I'd like to add in a white and golden yellow to even things out a bit.
