What is your favorite Uncommon plants that are easy to grow?

I love Colcocasia. I have Black Magic and Illustris. Both grow great in my alkaline clay. I would love to add Nancy's Revenge and Yellow Splash. Please let me know if you see these somewhere locally.

I also love the newer hydrangeas. I have Lady in Red, Lemon Daddy, and a variegated one. These seem to be doing very well right now, but I killed two Oak Leaf Hydrangeas last year. I have ordered Little Honey, but have not received it yet. Please, please, please don't let me kill it!

I also have a variegated gardenia that I picked up at a local garden center last year. So far, it is doing very well, but it is still in a pot. I will plant it in the ground soon. Again, please, please, please don't let me kill it.

So what are your favorite uncommon plants that thrive with little effort?

Hi, Rae. Well, I have several E.E.s, alocasias, colocasias and xans which I love. Then there are the Confederate roses which are making a comeback after going out of style. I hae the white and the pink varieties. I also have the single Confederate rose, Rubra, which blooms all summer. I used to think these were grandmother plants but as I get older, I've come to respect, love and seek them. Maybe it's because I'm a grandpa.

Fatsia japonica for shade, Tetrapanax papyriferus for sun (this one is perhaps too easy, if you know what I mean). LOL!

Sanseveiria's, jades, and orchids seem to be my easiest plants. I like to water my plants on the weekend. These plants do well when I water weekly. I tend to keep things under potted so overwatering usually is not one of my problems. I can easily skip a week with the sans and jades. I know my orchids will do well in an east window. I have bright light for my jades and I can move my sans around and they won't be bothered. Plants that can adapt to my schedule is my preference. Diane

Outdoors, I love my Lemon Sprite Rose bush. It grows these vivid yellow flowers, and true to their name they have a strong lemony-rose fragrance. I'm so glad I planted them next to my deck! I also love Lilacs and Hyacinths. My Hosta 'Guacamole' remind me of Jasmine. Some of the indoor plants I leave out in the summer are African Gardenia- which has a clean fresh smell, and Datura- I don't know which variety, but the flowers are white. I have Cestrum Nocturnum which has such a strong fragrance at night. I also love fragrant Bouvardia, but I have had such a tough time growing them. I have a few Gardenia varieties- Gardenia Coronata has bloomed twice indoors on a small plant (from Logee's) and it's a tough little cookie. I had a Gardenia (Sweet?) from Aloha Tropicals that bloomed two days after I received it in the mail, but unfortunately I broke the main stem- it was an unfortunate accident! As soon as it warms up enough I'm ordering another one.

For the cool weather comming, the greens, lettuce, and kale are easy! Turnips, radish, beet, and carrot. Carrot being the most difficult to be sure it comes up. you can also get onion sets this time of year and simply push the root end of them into the soil a little way and if there is a little bit of moisture in the soil, they will sprout up for you. We often surround our garden beds with onions. Just don't plant peas or beans with onions. Snow peas are good cool weather crop but if we get a hard freeze, it could kill the blooms and set back the harvest so some will recommend planting snow peas for the cool spring season. I'll be planting a bunch of snow peas here soon though since they like warm soil for germination. When we get to spring planting time, get some sweet potatoes started, they will make you think you are a master summer gardener!!! They like the hot and wet and produce a wonderful ground cover over your hole garden to help keep weeds at bay over summer. I've got a lovely bed that has Okra growing tall and sweet potatoes covering the ground and that bed did very well over the heat of summer and will probably continue to do well until it gets cold. Okra, sweet potatoes, southern peas (crowder peas, cow peas, black eye peas), beans, and hot peppers are good hot weather crops to think about for next summer. A mulberry that didn't survive? Wow. Was it a red one? Those are naturalized here. Are there mulberries in wild areas or neighbors' yards around you? Maybe you have a microclimate that's unfavorable, or perhaps you just had a dud. As for the blueberries, do you find you need to acidify the soil every year, or just upon the initial planting? I'm considering planting them near a cedar tree, hoping the droppings will provide some acidification, though I'm not entirely confident about the science of that. I know pine acidifies- not sure about cedars, though they seem they should. Theresa 2, can you remind us what dioecious means? Athenainwi- what variety of plum do you have that you have to bag? I was hoping for something a bit more self-sufficient, but still reasonably edible. Found it interesting that you use nylons. I wonder if cotton or muslin would work too. It's popular to use plastic bags, which doesn't at all appeal to me at all, for several reasons.

I agree Nelson I love my 3 I bought from hazels. Did some research on them they can get big or you can prune them to keep small. Such a different plant. Fatsia japonica.

I have a strawberry begonia(saxifraga stolinifera?) that was originally a house plant but I now have it in a partial shade bed. It's a great ground cover and overwinters. It sends out runners like a strawberry plant.
AND I have sea oats in my flower beds. These did not come from the coast! I live on the Alabama River and in '90 we had a major major flood. All these plants have reseeded themselves along the dirt road in the undeveloped ares.
I also love my hedychium gingers!

I absolutely love my gingers and my angel trumpets , my EE's, my crinums, my peruvian daffodils. I love my alstromeria and my cry baby tree.

I have a small clump of Blackberry Lily that I like, probably because I salvaged it off our property. It was growing under a dogwood tree near the barn, and the whole area had almost become overgrown with honeysuckle and poison ivy. Yes, I paid for cleaning all that junk out of there with a bit of poison ivy rash, but managed to transplant the BL to a bed near the house and it's done quite well.

Don't know how uncommon they are, but Helleborus x hybrids (Lenten Rose) grow amazingly well for me. Beautiful year round in northern AL, they are just about the perfect shade tolerant plant.

I love all of our native plants. They are disappearing in the wild but thriving in my yard. I try to do plant rescues when possible from new development areas. It is so funny that these plants grow naturally locally, and no one knows what they are.
