I am expecting 'La Reine' to be delivered today. Is it sturdier than 'Reine des Violettes'????

You only planted it in August?
If the summer heat has not killed it, it is probably growing roots. You have to give these plants a chance.

'La Reine' and 'Reine des Violettes' are completely different sorts of garden plants.

The former is stiffly upright, for the most part, and of moderate size. It can be troubled by rust in our area, and occasionally by mildew. Its very fragrant blooms are pink.

The latter is an arching plant of some size, which can be used as a modest climber. It is not troubled by any disease in Southern California, but it is not tolerant of alkaline conditions, and can be troubled by chlorosis. The blooms are loose and graceful, and decidedly violet in color in cool conditions -- fading to shocking pink in heat. The foliage is pepper-scented.

I'll be patient. The weather is in transition. Yet, we are still in the low 90's.

I moved her from one side of the garden to the other within the past 2 days. It was early in the morning.

I placed banana peels near the base. I read in another post that Reine des Violettes is a heavy feeder.

Yes, she is. But you have to give her a chance to grow ROOTS, before she starts pushing topgrowth. This late in the year, with a newly-planted bush, I would not feed.

Give her plenty of water. Mulch her well. Give her the winter, and see what she has to say for herself, come spring.

As an example -- in or around March, we put two Chinas and a Tea in the ground. All are on their own roots, and started from cuttings.

I just remarked to DH as we passed that they are all starting to push new growth. By spring, I think they'll be ready to put on a show.

I am going to be 70 soon, but I fully expect to see those bushes mature, and I am not impatient. Gardening will teach you to be patient, and to let nature find her rhythm.

Mauvegirl, as already stated the lack of growth may just be all the heat. However, Reine des Violettes can indeed be a very weak plant if she is infected with rose mosaic virus (RMV) in which case even when temperatures cool a virused Reine des Violettes is likely to remain delicate. RdV is in commerce both virused and clean. The clean plant is much more rewarding in the garden. Florida Southern College heat treated RdV and removed RMV years ago and some nurseries got a clean RdV from them. Unfortunately many nurseries won't disclose to you whether they are selling a virus-free or infected clone unless you drag the information out of them. Where did you buy yours?

Virused or not, you can't expect a whole bunch from a rose that was planted a month and a half ago (AND moved, subsequent to planting).

I have had roses bought potted, which were in such poor soil medium, and had been so pushed to bloom in the can, AND sprayed with every chemical known to man, which took the better part of two YEARS to become a decent garden plant.

Virused or not, a modicum of patience is required. You don't expect a 6-week-old puppy to retrieve game birds, and you can't expect a rose to be mature in a month.
