Antiques, Flea Markets & Junkin' Roadtrips

Hey everybody!

One of my favorite passtimes (besides gardening, of course) is antiqueing and flea market hunting. I would love to hear any suggestions y'all may have of great places to go in AL and surrounding areas. I'm south of BHam, but willing to travel. I love the Jemison Trade Center and the Atlanta Lakewood flea market.

I'm in love with the stuff at Myers in Pelham - the rusty old ironworks combined with weathered wood in the garden. I would love to copy that look for less. :o)

Any thoughts?

Hm...you sound like a person I would love. Junking is my latest hobby. I do mostly Saturday yard sales. I love to turn old junk into something good. Have you tried the garden junk forum or the trash to treasure forum. There are lots of ideas there. Where is the Jemison Trade Center?
What are some things you have done. I am in the process of refinishing an old trunk that I got at a yard sale. ($5.00) I have tons on unfinished projects. My husband it getting perturbed as the garage is quite full. I am into mosaics. i buy old plates at yard sales and break them to mosaic stuff with. So far i have put mosaic on a bowling ball (yard sale $1.00) Covered a tea cart (yard sale $2.00) mosaiced a bird bath....(birthday present from husband bought the old fashioned way!)

You might want to check out Mountain Top Flea Market - Gadsden area - on weekends, but don't remember how often.

Down here in Central Alabama we have "Santuck Flea Market" - a lot of stuff - some junk - some antiques - plants - crafts - you name it. Santuck Flea Mkt

Have you checked out the Scottsboro place - where all unclaimed baggage goes - you never know what you might find - that is in Jackson County, NE corner of the state.

Interesting how many of us have Fibro! Lucky us! Kat4kittens, what's going on with your neck? My oldest daughter and I have both had cervical fusions...several years ago now...due to degenerative disc disease. We both did well with the surgery. DD had her right after having a baby, is a cop on the streets and doing well. She also had 2 low-back surgeries when she was younger. I'm due for more neck surgery now. It keeps getting stuck! OUCH! Oh oh...got off the beaten track here! I have four DDs, whom I raised by myself for close to 10 years after their father walked out when they were very young. (All four girls were born within 2 yrs. and 3 months.) I finally married DH #2 who was raising his two DSs. At one point, we had 6 kids in the same high school! Oldest DS 4 months older than oldest DD. Younger son 2 days older than twin DDs.) Somehow, we survived their teenage years...and let them live!! Let me tell you...it was tough and go there for awhile! We now have a bundle and a half of grandkids...eleven actually...so far! The two youngest DDs are identical twins...who have lived directly across the street from one another for 11 years...and delivered baby girls 2 days apart 10 yrs. ago. How's that for planning! Middle DD had a baby boy a couple of weeks before that, and oldest DS's wife had a baby boy a couple of weeks after the girls were born. Four new grandkids in 11 weeks...made the newspaper...and have kept us all on our toes ever since! Oldest DD, not to be outdone, had her first baby on her own birthday a couple of years later. In spite of pain from degenerative disc disease, arthritis from head-to-toe, Fibro and some other nusence things, I manage to keep going...out of sheer determination! (Someone has to keep everyone else in line!) Because of an ulcer, I can't take painkillers and try to keep going by using "mind over matter"...which sometimes works better than others. But...like I said, I'm determined! We have half an acre that was pretty much naked when we moved in 7 yrs. ago, but presently is covered with leaves! (I wish I had thought to take a picture of all the leaves out there when it was daylight!) There were lovely gardens a couple of weeks ago where the leave are now! Hmmmmmm...I wonder where all the flowers went! And...how the heck did those 5 Eastern White Pines grow so fast??!! Definite animal lover here! Had four kitties, 3 of which I inherited when my brother died. Sadly, we lost 2 of them this past year...one just a couple of weeks ago. Good heavens...did I neglect to mention...I'm a frustrated writer? Sorry...I got carried away! ~Sandy~

Hello all, thanks for the shout out, I'll try to answer some of your questions about Canton, it's my favorite Flea. First let me say I'm sorry I have not been around lately. Seems for some reason my old user ID and password simply did not work anymore. I had to sign up again, so here I am and I'll try to behave this time. The best day to shop is on Thursday, but they are open Thu-Sunday the weekend before the First Monday of the month. Where to shop depends on what you are looking for. If you want the "good junk" and don't mind digging through boxes, and asking for prices, stick to the uncovered areas, I call these the fields. The best area is in front of and to the side of the Civic Center Building. The Civic Center is a blue roofed permanent structure. There are antiques inside this building as well, but the prices are not as good as outside. As long as you are outside in uncovered areas, you are in a good spot. When you arrive you'll see some covered buildings that are called the "Arbors" and "trade Center". There are some antique vendors inside these buildings but these items will be more expensive (and frankly they probably bought it all out in the fields near the civic center). You'll find a lot of new items in these covered buildings as well. The prices are good out in the fields, and moderate in the covered buildings. You are picking a good time of year to go, however September can still be warm so dress accordingly. Vendors are open usually from 10-5 in the fields. Get there early and don't be afraid to negotiate your prices. 4 days should be plenty, be careful that you don't end up at the wrong flea market. There is one just across from the animal section that is "NOT" canton. Look for those "arbors" buildings to know if you are in the right place. Park along Hwy 19. Maybe you could separate from your shopper friends for awhile, and spend some quality time junkin out in the fields. Have fun, Margo

Bostedo, I think you hit the nail on the head, or rather on the hair do! I hoped that the unusual hair arrangement would finally lead us to a name. Alexander was a handsome dude and with curly hair, but I looked in vain for the 'top knot' style. Thanks for the link with the great stories. Of course I'm going to save it lest I forget him as the art world seems to have done. I like a latte, fresh and hot, and I've come to prefer one in the afternoon instead of morning. At the end of the work day, when it comforts me. Gets me ready for the evening. I love to sleep in. Hardly ever get to, so when I have a morning when I don't have to be anywhere I love to stay in bed and stay in that soft place between sleep and awake where you are relaxed and you are aware of how relaxed you are. Spending a day with a friend. Had a Saturday last fall when an old friend was in town, we spent it at an outdoor book festival on a quaint downtown square and had lunch at a great French cafe. Soooo nice! I even said to her in the moment how I felt so relaxed and sort of one with myself. That "find yourself" moment recharges the batteries for a long time. I love taking the kids to the pool on a hot summer day and being so completely worn out from the play time that we just fall asleep smelling chlorine and cut grass. Visiting my parents, sitting around their fire pit roasting marshmallows. Fourth of July. I love the Fourth of July, parade, concert in the park, cook out, and fireworks. It's an annual family reunion for us, we go to Ohio to the town where I was born and most of my family still lives. Love to see my cousins and our kids playing together. Just thinking about these things makes me feel better. ;o) It's been a long week already!

Cockybamagirl - Jemison Trade Center is right off I-65 at the Jemison exit on County Road 44. Its a huge place with tons of booths. I go about once every three months. Very cool place! :)

I've taken a $17 chair that I bought from a side of the road junk dealer and turned it into an awesome purple funky chair with some retro fabric. My husband and I buy old wooden windows and turn them into shadowboxes. Here's one that he made me for a wedding gift:

I LOVE doing projects like this and luckily my husband enjoys it too. I would like to take this shabby chic look into my garden and add some unique touches like this. So far all I've gotten are some wrought iron plant holders on my fence:

We're sloooowly but surely getting our flowerbeds and yard into shape. We just moved into our home last year so we've got a lot of work ahead of us.

There'a also the world's longest yardsale (2 of 'em now-see their website), the Collinsville flea market, Bhm Fairgrounds Flea Mkt (this weekend), Lacon F.M., Gardendale flea mall, and another in Leeds, Garden City and Woodstock Antique Auctions (website), .....

I collect antique bicycles, furnature,and household items myself as well as garden junk. Some of the best finds came from the curb on trash day. Found lots of cool stuff just driving around in the country as well.

I heard Lakewood in Atlanta is closing. Anyone know the details? Best FM around :(

COULD YOU TELL ABOUT THE FLEA MARKET LOCATED IN BIRMINGHAM,I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO IT. HEAR IT WAS A BIG ONE. I THINK SOMEONE SAID IT'S NAME IS FARMER'S MARKET.
